Proactiv Solution Reviews
People have asked me about Proactiv® so much that I decided to try it so I could give my feedback. I found it to be surprisingly irritating and utterly ineffective. However, Proactiv is on the right track in recommending benzoyl peroxide, and specifically recommending it in 2.5% strength.
Where I think Proactiv veers off track:
- Cleanser: The Proactiv Cleanser contains scrubbing beads, and Proactiv recommends washing for 1-2 minutes with this cleanser. I am quite stunned at both of these oversights. It is absolutely vital to avoid irritation when treating acne, especially inflammatory acne—the kind most of us have. Scrubbing beads, and washing for this amount of time introduces unnecessary and damaging irritation, perpetuating the acne cycle.
- Toner: I think the Proactiv toner is fine, albeit unnecessary to achieve clear skin.
- Treatment: Over my 20+ years of benzoyl peroxide research and experience, I have found that for benzoyl peroxide to completely clear acne, people must apply it generously. “Use a lot!,” is my simple mantra. It is amazing what this simple act will do toward achieving completely clear skin. Unfortunately, Proactiv packages its treatment in a 1oz. container. The small size of Proactiv ’s treatment bottle leaves people skimping and often disappointed in results. Next, Proactiv combines their benzoyl peroxide treatment with moisturizer. One of the main reasons benzoyl peroxide works so well is because it is a drying and peeling agent, which helps prevent clogged pores. For this reason, it is a good idea to apply benzoyl peroxide without moisturizer, and let the benzoyl peroxide do its thing for a few minutes (5-15) before introducing moisture. Unfortunately, you don’t have that choice with the Proactiv treatment. Lastly, the treatment is heavily scented. I personally avoid scented products because they must be applied right under the nose, and tend to linger and leave me feeling a little nauseated throughout the day.
My suggestion: To completely clear acne, it will prove far more beneficial to buy a gentle cleanser without scrubbing beads, a large, unscented 2.5% benzoyl peroxide medication, and a non-comedogenic moisturizer. Then follow these steps precisely to achieve completely clear skin.
If you currently own Proactiv Solution products, don't throw out the Repairing Treatment. If you can handle the smell, it should work in a pinch, as long as you are generous with it. I would not recommend using the Proactiv cleanser. I would also forgo the toner until you’re completely clear. Then feel free to add it in if you’d like and see how things go.
As a final note, I am thankful that Proactiv hires celebrities to talk about acne. This helps reduce stigma, so thumbs up on that!

| Pros | The refining is amazing! The steps are really good! I love it |
|---|---|
| Cons | Burns my skin Step number 3 didn't go well with my skin |
| Bottom line | I loved pro active everything was beautiful it left my skin nice and soft! My blemishes went away after using the refining moisturizer. The only thing I didn't like about it was step #3 did not go well with my skin. Step #3 just left my skin even redder and full of blemishes I looked like a tomato but now I'm using the moisturizer steps 1 and 2 and my acne is clearing up! |

| Acne severity | moderately severe |
| Pros | Easy to order |
|---|---|
| Cons | * Irritated my skin terribly * Terrible customer service * Looking for any way to get your money |
| Bottom line | I was tired of my minor to moderate acne, and really wanted to try to make it better before my wedding. I had had good results with benzoyl peroxide products in the past, so I thought trying Proactiv was worth it. It was easy to order, and arrived fairly quickly. I had paid for the expedited shipping, but it didn't arrive in anywhere near the claimed timeframe. So call #1 to customer service to refund the shipping charges. Within a week of starting use, my face was red, itchy, and just plain irritated. I cut back on use for another week, but my skin only got worse. I tried using it every other day for another week, but still, only worse. I stopped my shipments, but another shipment arrived a few weeks later. Call #2 to customer service - apparently my account hadn't been closed. I sent that shipment back immediately, but two months after that, I got a bill that my account was overdue. Customer service contact #3 (this time in email so I had something in writing), and found out that my account was STILL not cancelled. Plus, they hadn't received my return. The next bill I received was threatening sending me to collection. A final call to Customer Service, when I found out that I was still being charged for the returned shipment because it took "85 days for the warehouse to process the return", which is outside of their 60 day return policy. I returned that shipment within 30 days. So I will pay the bill for a product I never used, that didn't work for me. I would be wary to recommend anyone trying it. |

|---|---|
| Cons | Did not work. BEWARE when you order online you are joining the "Proactiv" club. They will automatically charge you every 2 months and send you a new package. They will NOT notify you that they are doing this. |
| Bottom line | DON'T BUY. |

| Pros | Easy to order |

| Cons | Product did not work well with my skin, in fact, made it worse, I continued (stupidly) thinking that it would get better, it didn't. Would not recommend this at all. Be aware also that if you order online, Proactiv keep on sending and charging you for the product, even though you don't need it. They will refund you however, once you've paid the P&P, for an item you didn't need or want in the first place... ah.... |
| Bottom line | Stay well clear, its not worth it. |

| Pros | Came with a free refining mask |
|---|---|
| Cons | Didn't work |
| Bottom line | I tried using this product twice, both times I used it every day for about a four month period. I was really excited to get started using this (it was the first real thing I had tried for my acne) but it gave absolutely no results. I feel like this product would only help you if you had three or four zits on your entire face, because that's about all cleared for me. I had never cancelled my order so I kept getting boxes of it and after about six months of stopping I tried it again, but as before I saw no results. I have seen results for some people, but definitely not recommended if you have severe acne. |

| Acne severity | severe |
| Pros | It heals fast |
|---|---|
| Cons | It is very expensive compared to acne.org. It is not worth the price. The main problem with proactiv is that acne bacteria becomes resistant to tis ingredients. Why? Because acne bacteria tries SO HARD to survive on the skin that it basically fights with the product for the pore area and after using it for more than three months you will see that the initial results will begin to reduce until it seems like your wasting your money cause it doesn't do anything anymore. I'm a microbiologist. |
| Bottom line | Overall proactiv is not a product that you could use always. Acne.org can be used always because it heals and you won't be struggling with the fact that it doesn't work, because it will clear your skin. |

| Pros | Got rid of my acne the first few months |
|---|---|
| Cons | Dried out my skin like crazy Cleanser and lotion left a burning sensation on my skin |
| Bottom line | When I first got Proactiv it was like my holy grail for acne, but I recently got a shipment in and this set is burning my skin and drying it out till it flakes. The cleanser, toner, and lotion all gave my face a burning feeling and my skin started to turn red. Never purchasing this product again. |
