Proactiv Solution Reviews
People have asked me about Proactiv® so much that I decided to try it so I could give my feedback. I found it to be surprisingly irritating and utterly ineffective. However, Proactiv is on the right track in recommending benzoyl peroxide, and specifically recommending it in 2.5% strength.
Where I think Proactiv veers off track:
- Cleanser: The Proactiv Cleanser contains scrubbing beads, and Proactiv recommends washing for 1-2 minutes with this cleanser. I am quite stunned at both of these oversights. It is absolutely vital to avoid irritation when treating acne, especially inflammatory acne—the kind most of us have. Scrubbing beads, and washing for this amount of time introduces unnecessary and damaging irritation, perpetuating the acne cycle.
- Toner: I think the Proactiv toner is fine, albeit unnecessary to achieve clear skin.
- Treatment: Over my 20+ years of benzoyl peroxide research and experience, I have found that for benzoyl peroxide to completely clear acne, people must apply it generously. “Use a lot!,” is my simple mantra. It is amazing what this simple act will do toward achieving completely clear skin. Unfortunately, Proactiv packages its treatment in a 1oz. container. The small size of Proactiv ’s treatment bottle leaves people skimping and often disappointed in results. Next, Proactiv combines their benzoyl peroxide treatment with moisturizer. One of the main reasons benzoyl peroxide works so well is because it is a drying and peeling agent, which helps prevent clogged pores. For this reason, it is a good idea to apply benzoyl peroxide without moisturizer, and let the benzoyl peroxide do its thing for a few minutes (5-15) before introducing moisture. Unfortunately, you don’t have that choice with the Proactiv treatment. Lastly, the treatment is heavily scented. I personally avoid scented products because they must be applied right under the nose, and tend to linger and leave me feeling a little nauseated throughout the day.
My suggestion: To completely clear acne, it will prove far more beneficial to buy a gentle cleanser without scrubbing beads, a large, unscented 2.5% benzoyl peroxide medication, and a non-comedogenic moisturizer. Then follow these steps precisely to achieve completely clear skin.
If you currently own Proactiv Solution products, don't throw out the Repairing Treatment. If you can handle the smell, it should work in a pinch, as long as you are generous with it. I would not recommend using the Proactiv cleanser. I would also forgo the toner until you’re completely clear. Then feel free to add it in if you’d like and see how things go.
As a final note, I am thankful that Proactiv hires celebrities to talk about acne. This helps reduce stigma, so thumbs up on that!

| Cons | I have never had sensitive skin issues but the product caused me to break out into a rash. Customer service was TERRIBLE to deal with when I tried to return the product, then three months later started charging me again, stating I never cancelled. I was told I would get a refund only when I returned the products I allegedly received in those three months, but I had not received any because I had cancelled my membership. |
|---|---|
| Bottom line | I had light acne that had never required a trip to the dermatologist, I just wanted to clear some occasional breakouts, so maybe the product was just too strong for me. I have heard many success stories from people with moderate to severe acne. The customer service, however, ruined this product for me. I never got a refund because I could not return products I wasn't receiving. For the company to stop sending me the product and charging my card, then begin charging my card again three months later and say they had sent me products during those three months makes no sense. |

| Acne severity | very light |
| Pros | Works at first Easy to use |
|---|---|
| Cons | Harshly dries out skin Leaves burning redness (like a chemical burn) Makes acne worse after awhile Caused me tons of razor bumps after a shave Expensive Shady company scamming people Takes an extra month between shipments |
| Bottom line | I started proactiv after a few recommendations and while it works at first, i started to develop clusters of deep cystic acne on my face and neck. Also, after every shave i would have clusters of irritated hair follicles that would raise up. Dont even think about stopping it if you start it because your acne gets severely worse even one day without using it (along with a rash that resembles acne). The products are extremely expensive and it seems the regular products cause more problems for other products of theirs to conveniently fix (hmmmm). Skin gets dry and flaky (magically solved by their green tea moisturizer), cysts develop (solved by refining mask), razor bumps (they recommend yet another product), skin gets more oily during the middle of the day (they have another product for that too). Its definitely a good elaborate scam that keeps getting you with more and more money each month. Bottom line, its horrible. |

| Cons | The Chemicals burned my skin, it made my acne worse- I had moderate acne to begin with, but Proactive made my acne turn into cystic acne- large, deep, painful acne that took FOREVER to go away. Then when I cancelled they continued to charge me after I sent their box back, stating they had a certain day return policy and I sent it too late, then they kept charging me. I had to sic my enraged husband on their terrible customer service. |
| Bottom line | DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT!!!!! |

| Pros | Gets rid of major blemishes and reduces redness |
|---|---|
| Bottom line | Everyone always says proactiv is so bad it never works but it works for me. I bought it a week ago and my major bumps are gone I still have a flew blemishes but there's no redness and it leaves my skin feeling clean. The reaso proactiv doesn't work for some people is all dependent on what kind of skin you have. I have normal skin and I think it works for oily skin but if you have dry skin I don't recommend using it. And buy the refining mask and I Spread a thin layer of it all over my chin and my forehead and I Leave it overnight and my skin isn't dry in the morning. |

| Cons | They'll rip you off Doesn't really work They'll rip you off some more |
|---|---|
| Bottom line | Do NOT buy from them. I paid for my original package, then when they sent me another one, I immediately sent it back to avoid charges. I had a tracking number, so when I saw that it had arrived, i simply threw it away. BAD IDEA. They continued to charge me $70 for the package I sent back, but they "never received," and of course without that tracking number, I couldn't get a refund. Then, I later get another bill from some agency saying I still owed them money. Regret! Such a rip off! |

| Pros | it is the only acne line i have ever used that has actually cleared my acne! |
|---|---|
| Cons | i have a hard time getting information on the website as far as the other products they sell. i can not seem to look through a full product catalog? |
| Bottom line | i had beautiful skin until i turned 19....then bam! my skin was a mess! ive been to several dermatologists over the past 17 yrs. only to have very tramatizing experiences followed by temporary relief. i not only have "normal" acne, i also have cystic acne.i have tried every acne line under the sun, from drug store finds to top of the line. 3 yrs ago this past march my husband of 11yrs urged me to go back on proactiv. he stated - and he was 100% correct - that my skin has never been as clear and flawless as it is when i am using proactiv.after a week & 1/2 to 2 weeks of using the line as instructed my skin began to clear.now i can not only run to the store minus the war paint - i can hold my head up high, smile & make eye contact with my clients or whom ever else i happen to meet. using proactiv has made my world a happier place be! |
