Proactiv Solution Reviews
People have asked me about Proactiv® so much that I decided to try it so I could give my feedback. I found it to be surprisingly irritating and utterly ineffective. However, Proactiv is on the right track in recommending benzoyl peroxide, and specifically recommending it in 2.5% strength.
Where I think Proactiv veers off track:
- Cleanser: The Proactiv Cleanser contains scrubbing beads, and Proactiv recommends washing for 1-2 minutes with this cleanser. I am quite stunned at both of these oversights. It is absolutely vital to avoid irritation when treating acne, especially inflammatory acne—the kind most of us have. Scrubbing beads, and washing for this amount of time introduces unnecessary and damaging irritation, perpetuating the acne cycle.
- Toner: I think the Proactiv toner is fine, albeit unnecessary to achieve clear skin.
- Treatment: Over my 20+ years of benzoyl peroxide research and experience, I have found that for benzoyl peroxide to completely clear acne, people must apply it generously. “Use a lot!,” is my simple mantra. It is amazing what this simple act will do toward achieving completely clear skin. Unfortunately, Proactiv packages its treatment in a 1oz. container. The small size of Proactiv ’s treatment bottle leaves people skimping and often disappointed in results. Next, Proactiv combines their benzoyl peroxide treatment with moisturizer. One of the main reasons benzoyl peroxide works so well is because it is a drying and peeling agent, which helps prevent clogged pores. For this reason, it is a good idea to apply benzoyl peroxide without moisturizer, and let the benzoyl peroxide do its thing for a few minutes (5-15) before introducing moisture. Unfortunately, you don’t have that choice with the Proactiv treatment. Lastly, the treatment is heavily scented. I personally avoid scented products because they must be applied right under the nose, and tend to linger and leave me feeling a little nauseated throughout the day.
My suggestion: To completely clear acne, it will prove far more beneficial to buy a gentle cleanser without scrubbing beads, a large, unscented 2.5% benzoyl peroxide medication, and a non-comedogenic moisturizer. Then follow these steps precisely to achieve completely clear skin.
If you currently own Proactiv Solution products, don't throw out the Repairing Treatment. If you can handle the smell, it should work in a pinch, as long as you are generous with it. I would not recommend using the Proactiv cleanser. I would also forgo the toner until you’re completely clear. Then feel free to add it in if you’d like and see how things go.
As a final note, I am thankful that Proactiv hires celebrities to talk about acne. This helps reduce stigma, so thumbs up on that!

| Pros | The product does work for the most part |
|---|---|
| Cons | You are decieved about the actuall cost. The commercial states $19.95 and free shipping. What they don't tell you is that you are getting trial sizes. So after the initial $21 cost, if you opt for the 3 month shipment your are now in for an additional $73. |
| Bottom line | You are being scammed on the cost. |

| Cons | Nothing really. I guess, its a little on the expensive side. |
| Bottom line | I bought proactiv after being so fed up with my acne which has been bugging me for almost 5 years. No one knew I used proactiv and after a few day, a friend noticed and said, "hey, your skin looked a lot better". Compliments keeps coming from that point. It truely changed my life! Its a year after now and Im back to square one - this time, even worse. But thats cause I stopped using Proactiv after 6 month, when I felt my skin looked its best and acne is out my way. Bottomline, proactiv works if you use it consistently and stick with it till...welll, forever. Either way, proactiv gets my two thumbs up :) |

| Pros | Quick results, refreshing, quick and easy application |
|---|---|
| Cons | drys out skin, strong scent, harsh, bleaches towels |
| Bottom line | Proactiv really did work for me. My skin was as bad as its ever been. I have never had bad acne but at the beginning of college I became stressed and I broke out. So I tired the 30 day treatment and my skin cleared up significantly. BUT, it dried my skin out. My skin is never dry and never oily. I became really dry and it did not look good. If your acne isn't too bad and you just want to clear it up just use it once a day and t will work. Thats was I did after 3 about weeks. If your skin is dry already, get a lightweight facial lotion. It does work, you just have to adapt it to your skin. |

| Pros | Cleared my skin perfectly. |
|---|---|
| Cons | Bottles are small. Have to upgrade to the bigger bottles, the small go quick |
| Bottom line | Ive tried everything, proactiv is the only thing that's has ever worked for me. After a awhile skin will get a little dry. Use their moisturizer, it's great. Then if you over due it and your skin gets oily, use the oil control. I love it, I stopped for awhile and my acne came back. Now I use it once a day, and the extras and I'm back to clear skin. Really does work |

| Pros | Great for treating acne, HOWEVER, be very cautious when purchasing product from Proactiv. |

| Cons | Deceitful company, which is a shame because the product is good. With misleading gimmicks, customer service reps that will give you a different answer every time and unauthorized charges to my credit card I would rate this company a 1. |

| Cons | Dried out my skin Made my skin itchy like crazy Didnt even clear all acne Made skin look dull and tired Cleanser was a little harsh |
| Bottom line | I paid 50.00 for this stuff in a kiosk. 50.00!!!! For 3 bottles that last like 2 months. In my opinion thats not worth it at all. I dont see why people waist their money on this stuff, there are so many drugstore products that work just as well. Thanks! |

|---|---|
| Cons | Does not get rid of acne scars |

| Pros | Cleared (most of) my skin Made it softer |
|---|---|
| Cons | Still get frequent blemishes Extremely drying My skin still gets oily mid-day Toner runs out very fast |
| Bottom line | I started using this product about a year ago. I was fourteen and I was fed up with my acne that had been moderate/highly moderate for the past two years. I saw the commercials and decided to finally give this product a try, seeing as I had been all over the board with about five or six other products. I ordered it and it was shipped to my house. I began using it and I broke out, but then after about a month or two my skin began to become clearer, but I still couldn't get rid of the acne. After about six months my skin began to begin to clear up for the most part, but I was never fully clear. I still use it now (along with Neutrogena Moisturising Lotion, which seemed to be the only thing that worked) and I'm tired of looking into the mirror and seeing acne. I'm about to switch products. |
