Proactiv Solution Reviews
People have asked me about Proactiv® so much that I decided to try it so I could give my feedback. I found it to be surprisingly irritating and utterly ineffective. However, Proactiv is on the right track in recommending benzoyl peroxide, and specifically recommending it in 2.5% strength.
Where I think Proactiv veers off track:
- Cleanser: The Proactiv Cleanser contains scrubbing beads, and Proactiv recommends washing for 1-2 minutes with this cleanser. I am quite stunned at both of these oversights. It is absolutely vital to avoid irritation when treating acne, especially inflammatory acne—the kind most of us have. Scrubbing beads, and washing for this amount of time introduces unnecessary and damaging irritation, perpetuating the acne cycle.
- Toner: I think the Proactiv toner is fine, albeit unnecessary to achieve clear skin.
- Treatment: Over my 20+ years of benzoyl peroxide research and experience, I have found that for benzoyl peroxide to completely clear acne, people must apply it generously. “Use a lot!,” is my simple mantra. It is amazing what this simple act will do toward achieving completely clear skin. Unfortunately, Proactiv packages its treatment in a 1oz. container. The small size of Proactiv ’s treatment bottle leaves people skimping and often disappointed in results. Next, Proactiv combines their benzoyl peroxide treatment with moisturizer. One of the main reasons benzoyl peroxide works so well is because it is a drying and peeling agent, which helps prevent clogged pores. For this reason, it is a good idea to apply benzoyl peroxide without moisturizer, and let the benzoyl peroxide do its thing for a few minutes (5-15) before introducing moisture. Unfortunately, you don’t have that choice with the Proactiv treatment. Lastly, the treatment is heavily scented. I personally avoid scented products because they must be applied right under the nose, and tend to linger and leave me feeling a little nauseated throughout the day.
My suggestion: To completely clear acne, it will prove far more beneficial to buy a gentle cleanser without scrubbing beads, a large, unscented 2.5% benzoyl peroxide medication, and a non-comedogenic moisturizer. Then follow these steps precisely to achieve completely clear skin.
If you currently own Proactiv Solution products, don't throw out the Repairing Treatment. If you can handle the smell, it should work in a pinch, as long as you are generous with it. I would not recommend using the Proactiv cleanser. I would also forgo the toner until you’re completely clear. Then feel free to add it in if you’d like and see how things go.
As a final note, I am thankful that Proactiv hires celebrities to talk about acne. This helps reduce stigma, so thumbs up on that!

| Pros | Significantly reduced the appearance of acne Easy to use Polite customer service reps |
|---|---|
| Cons | It dried out my skin at first, then I learned I was using too much cleanser. |
| Bottom line | You know, I read many reviews online before I decided to order this product. Many of them were negative but I decided that $30 to try something wouldn't hurt. I have to say this is the best acne product I've ever come across. It did dry out my skin at first, but I called customer service and found out that I was using way too much of the cleanser. Other reviews I've read bash the company altogether. The company isn't doing anything illegal. You're entered into a replenishment program - it clearly states that. On the commercials (worded "with auto home delivery") and is on their web site and it's even in their catalogs. It's not their fault that no one bothers to read. It also cancel at any time. Why is everyone up in arms about the auto home delivery? You're made aware of it by purchasing the initial product and it IS on your invoice that comes with your initial intro kit. Another thing that disappoints me about some of the reviews is the fact that no one seems to know math. Yes, the basic 90 day supply seems expensive - I had a heart attack at first, too. But after crunching some numbers and talking to customer service, I'm still only paying the amount that I paid for a 30 day supply each month. Of course, the more product you add, the higher the total kit price. To sum it up, the product is great. If it doesn't work out - you can send it back for a refund within 60 days (for those who don't know how to read, it's minus shipping and handling). Stop writing hateful reviews for a product because you're too ignorant to read the fine print and everything else pertaining to the product. |

| Acne severity | moderate |
| Pros | -Skin felt smoother -Redness faded away slightly -Acne did not get worse |
|---|---|
| Cons | -Expensive -Skin feels inflamed for a good five minutes or so after each use -Acne did not get better |
| Bottom line | For $30/mo, I expected at least SOME of my acne to go away. I only tried it because my friends saw nice results. I guess it's just a hit or miss with most people. I say only try this as a last resort. The company who makes this is obviously just after your money. They offer a whole brochure telling you to buy this, buy that, and you HAVE TO have this! Some acne medications out there have proven results and cost the same monthly WITHOUT scrubbing the crap out of your face with ten thousand products. Good luck trying to get them to stop sending, AND charging, you their kits too as they have yet to take a hint that I cancelled my subscription MONTHS ago. |

| Pros | Not even going to try it again. Refining mask works VERY well. |
|---|---|
| Cons | Very, very, very bad reviews even off of this site. |
| Bottom line | I ordered Proactiv around 3 weeks ago, and it just came in around 3 days ago. I haven't even bothered to remove anything but the Proactiv Refining mask, which I think is the only thing that works. After reading everyone's experiences and the before/after in the long run, I am against most of this product. I don't recommend this product. Now that I think about it, I think when I was using Proactiv when I was younger (hardly remember) it gave me the bad acne I have today after using it. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. 1star = product 5stars = refining mask |

| Pros | None |
|---|---|
| Cons | I used this product and it burned very much so. The initial applications caused a breaking out of my skin then 4 months in to my subscription the company has a new and improved formula without offering any sort of compensation for existing customers. Not only that, I canceled my subscription yet was aware that I was continually being charged. The withrawl three times, once per month to pay for one package. Customer service was very rude and unsympathetic. Worst experience with a company by far. |
| Bottom line | DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. Under handed dealings. This company assumes you are knowledgeable about the most detailed aspects of the dealing with Proactiv. It was a waste of time, money, and very uncomfortable skin. I wouldn't recommend this to my worse enemy. Very unprofessional company that uses much marketing to sell thier product as oppose to word of mouth as do the real reputable companies. |

| Pros | None. |
|---|---|
| Cons | If you have sensitive skin I recommend avoiding this product. Commonly cause mild to sever skin irritation. |
| Bottom line | Avoid, or use a test strip for 2 plus days. This product is extremely strong and I warn anyone with sensitive skin to not use it. There are numerous reports of allergic reactions. I had a sever allergic reaction that lasted over a week, almost like a chemical burn, raised, itchy bumps all over my face and neck, and had followed the usage instruction carefully. Don't say you haven't been warned. |

| Cons | worst cleanser EVER made!!!!! i mean, yea it takes away pimples and blackheads for the first week, but after you stop using it just for one day, it makes the acne worse!!!! and Too expencive for a bottle of nothing that helps NO ONE! |
| Bottom line | I absolutely despise this product, it never actually worked and NEVER will! and also WARNING THAT AFTER YOU PAY FOR PROACTIV, THEY KEEP ON SENDING YOU MONTHLY PRODUCTS AND AUTOMATICLY CHARGING YOU FOR IT!!! this product doesnt just basicly do nothing....... it irritates skin and leaves it dry and guess what?! you see all of those adds on tv and they pay millions of dollars to sell a product to teens like you that doesnt even work! shame on anyone who looks at this and doesn't listen to a word im typing, and shame to those who use proactiv! Thank you very much..... |

| Pros | -Refining mask works -Cleanser was okay -Made my skin softer |
|---|---|
| Cons | -Didn't get rid of or stop acne -Really expensive -My skin still feels oily |
| Bottom line | It didn't work for me. I felt so happy when i ordered it but when it came it didn't do much. If you have already ordered it and you are just checking up on the product, i would say it may work for you. If you are thinking about ordering it, DON'T! There are so many cheaper products out there which are much more effective. |
