Proactiv Solution Reviews
People have asked me about Proactiv® so much that I decided to try it so I could give my feedback. I found it to be surprisingly irritating and utterly ineffective. However, Proactiv is on the right track in recommending benzoyl peroxide, and specifically recommending it in 2.5% strength.
Where I think Proactiv veers off track:
- Cleanser: The Proactiv Cleanser contains scrubbing beads, and Proactiv recommends washing for 1-2 minutes with this cleanser. I am quite stunned at both of these oversights. It is absolutely vital to avoid irritation when treating acne, especially inflammatory acne—the kind most of us have. Scrubbing beads, and washing for this amount of time introduces unnecessary and damaging irritation, perpetuating the acne cycle.
- Toner: I think the Proactiv toner is fine, albeit unnecessary to achieve clear skin.
- Treatment: Over my 20+ years of benzoyl peroxide research and experience, I have found that for benzoyl peroxide to completely clear acne, people must apply it generously. “Use a lot!,” is my simple mantra. It is amazing what this simple act will do toward achieving completely clear skin. Unfortunately, Proactiv packages its treatment in a 1oz. container. The small size of Proactiv ’s treatment bottle leaves people skimping and often disappointed in results. Next, Proactiv combines their benzoyl peroxide treatment with moisturizer. One of the main reasons benzoyl peroxide works so well is because it is a drying and peeling agent, which helps prevent clogged pores. For this reason, it is a good idea to apply benzoyl peroxide without moisturizer, and let the benzoyl peroxide do its thing for a few minutes (5-15) before introducing moisture. Unfortunately, you don’t have that choice with the Proactiv treatment. Lastly, the treatment is heavily scented. I personally avoid scented products because they must be applied right under the nose, and tend to linger and leave me feeling a little nauseated throughout the day.
My suggestion: To completely clear acne, it will prove far more beneficial to buy a gentle cleanser without scrubbing beads, a large, unscented 2.5% benzoyl peroxide medication, and a non-comedogenic moisturizer. Then follow these steps precisely to achieve completely clear skin.
If you currently own Proactiv Solution products, don't throw out the Repairing Treatment. If you can handle the smell, it should work in a pinch, as long as you are generous with it. I would not recommend using the Proactiv cleanser. I would also forgo the toner until you’re completely clear. Then feel free to add it in if you’d like and see how things go.
As a final note, I am thankful that Proactiv hires celebrities to talk about acne. This helps reduce stigma, so thumbs up on that!

| Pros | Worked at first, and quickly too. It also wasn't TOO expensive for the starter kit, considering how much they give you. |
|---|---|
| Cons | They trick you into a bunch of payments and keep shipping you stuff. Customer service is a pain, and they are pushy. The product stops working after a while, and my skin was literally burning. I bleached a brand new towel. All my pimples came back and then some. |
| Bottom line | Proactiv works for a while. It is really strong, though, and actually caused me pain from the burning I felt after using it for a long period of time. I've actually "graduated" to using it once every other day, and using a really, really gentle face wash the rest of the time. (Aveeno Clear Complexion) Between the two, it's a really good balance, and my acne is minimal, compared to being almost heavy after using Proactiv for two months. (Plus, I don't feel like my face is on fire.) It made it much worse. I don't quite get what the toner does, but I do see the need for a deep cleaning (hence the scrubbing beads in the cleanser) SOMETIMES, but not every day, or worse, twice a day! Youch! And I did like the repairing treatment; the refining mask is great as well, but it only adds to dryness/irritation if used alongside the other steps. Daily oil control is not needed, and the moisturizer is so-so. Not moisturizing enough for how badly my skin was burning/itching, but now, I don't really need it much because my skin is back in balance. Overall, not worth the price. |

| Pros | fairly inexpensive, started working almost right away, leaves skin smooth & less oily |
|---|---|
| Cons | cleanser is a little harsh at first |
| Bottom line | I have only been using Proactiv for about 2 weeks and I have seen a drastic improvement in not only my acne but the overall condition of my skin. It has become more smooth, supple, and youthful looking, and has also become far less oily, which has always been a problem for me. I have used several other products and nothing has worked like Proactiv. I love it!! |

| Pros | I don't get whiteheads, just occasionally some blackheads which is normal. The skin is less oily which is good. |
|---|---|
| Cons | over applying the toner and lotion makes my face reddish and sensitive to sun and sea water. |
| Bottom line | For me, the cleanser and sulfur mask are the only thing i found it effective. Toner and lotion are rubbish. The good thing is that they can be bought separately which is good. |

| Pros | Makes you feel like it's going to work.... |
|---|---|
| Cons | Wash irritates your skin because of those stupid beads.. Repairing lotion doesn't really work it makes your skin oily.. Toner is stupid and it makes your skin even more oily... Just an ineffective product... |
| Bottom line | Proactiv = Negactiv Too costly... Just try Dans treatment if you havn't yet.. Proactiv doesn't work it's a waste of money because they only made the bottles smaller.. and they trick you into a 4 month buying plan where you end up spending $150 which is ridiculous... |

| Pros | -cleared up my acne for 2 years |
|---|---|
| Cons | -stopped working after 2 years -skin adjusted to formula -bleaches towels |
| Bottom line | I have sworn by this product for the last 2 years. I fell in love with it because within the first few weeks it seemed to clear up all of my acne. I didn't experience any irritation or dryness...I have moderate acne on my chin and jawline and nothing I tried would clear it up.. but Proactiv really seemed to work and all of my horrid acne problems seemed like they were finally fixed and I could go on living life. Flash forward 2 years, I started breaking out again, this time bad, especially around the chin area. It seems like my face has almost grown resistant to the Proactiv's BP formula. The worst part is, I have become so attached to this formula that I can't stop using it... even though it doesn't seem to be helping with my acne at all anymore. It is just a comfort thing that I have to do in the morning and at night... the three steps. So that's about it, it worked wonders for a couple years then fizzled out... now I'm stuck addicted to the routine of the 3 steps and I'm worried about using other BP products since my acne seems to be fighting the BP in Proactiv. I would recommend it for people looking for a quick fix for awhile... but definitely not a way to clear up your face forever like I was once fooled into believing :( |

| Pros | Hopeful that it would work. |
|---|---|
| Cons | Auto-ship and charge Small amounts of product Adverse reaction HORRIBLE customer service!! |
| Bottom line | I'm happy for those people that this product worked for unfortunately I am not one of them. My face completely broke out in a raised rash and then peeled off. I then had to begin the two month process of canceling my account. Absolutely ridiculous! I which I had never tried it! |
