I heard about coconut oil from a friend. She told me she met an older woman in her 50's who looked like she was in her late 20's!! the woman said she's been using coconut oil on her skin for like 15 years (its apparently amazing for wrinkles..not that i have any i'm only 25). So i decided to look up reviews for the oil like i do with every other product before i buy it and came across this forum and others saying its really affective for acne. I've also read that about products that weren't affective at all but seeing people claim that it worked when they've been struggling for years with acne and nothing worked i decided to buy some because i had nothing to lose my face was already horrible with acne and deep red/purple scars and its pretty cheap to buy! I bought the Nutiva brand and LOVE it. smells amazing and tastes pretty good too. I decided to just use the oil to cleanse my face instead of my regular "acne stress control" cleanser because i heard its also good as a cleanser as well as a moisturizer. At bed time i rinse my face with hot water then massage the oil onto my face for a few minutes and then i rinse it off and pat it dry gently and then rub some on my face as a moisturizer. I wake up and repeat. Sometimes i even do it in the middle of the day too around like 3 just because i like my face to feel super clean. I've only been using it for about 3 weeks and my skin has cleared right up! I.ve seriously tried everything including Proactive and Clinique acne solutions, Neutrogena Skin ID, antibiotics, etc. and my last resort was Accutaine( or however you spell it) and i really did NOT want to mess with that stuff. I'm so glad that i tried the coconut oil because its really cheap to buy and its also got multiple purposes if it doesn't work for your skin. I use it as a hair treatment, as a body moisturizer, sunsceen, deodorant (yes it really works), and i put it in my tea for the health benefits it has. Apparently ingesting it can help your skin too. If you're skeptical about it and thinking...oh its going to clog my pores etc..it really doesn't. If it does you are probably using the wrong kind. Make sure its organic, extra virgin, unrefined! My skin is also really oily and it helped that too. So if you're skin is bad and you don't want to use medication and expensive products just give it a try and if it does make it worse for some strange reason then you can stop but at least give it a try I'm SO glad i did! And its also lightening my scars a lot too!=) I really wish i had known about this sooner so i could have gone without all the scars that acne has left!

Pros

  • Cheap price
  • Really works
  • no side effects

Cons

  • none!
  • for a few weeks
  • $ 12.99
  • I recommend using this treatment.

I have been struggling with acne for years now so I thought I would give organic coconut oil a shot. My face started to break out within a couple of days and never really got better. After about 2 weeks, I had large pimples beneath my skin beginning to form. I realized it was only worsening my skin. I was breaking out all over my face, so I decided to stop. Once I did it began to clear up right away. I suggest anyone with acne prone skin NOT to use any OILS on your face.. it will only worsen it. Oil causes acne, and you should be trying to dry it out instead of adding moisture that you do not need. Going back to lush products, they worked best.

Pros

[not submitted]

Cons

  • Caused more breakouts than before
  • moderate
  • for a few weeks
  • $ 7
  • I do not recommend using this treatment.

I started this regiment a full year ago with moderate acne. I had problems with my t-zone and had begun forming nodule pimples around my cheek area.

Initially, the acne got horribly visible as all of the deep acne from years of dry skin started loosening up and surfacing. I had a pimple that I hadn't gotten all of when I was 13 resurface. After the initial "purging" I noticed an immediate change in my skin.

My skin was no longer red and blotchy from picking or using salacylic acid treatments and acne was very minimal and they would surface and go away within a few days.

Here we are a year later. I do see now that you MUST continue the treatment or your skin will go back to that previous state. In my opinion (not a doctor) I believe the coconut oil just moisturizes your face and thus loosens up the acne before it can get too bad.

Is this an end to all of your worries about acne? No

Is this a good way to prevent acne from accumulating? Yes.

Pros

  • Loosened up acne deep in the skin.
  • Softer skin.

Cons

  • Cannot stop using daily or you will break out again.
  • Does not stop acne from springing up.
  • moderate
  • for about a year
  • $ 10
  • I recommend using this treatment.

I eat extra virgin coconut oil daily. And it has worked wonders. I melt 2 teaspoons and mix into my daily green smoothie. I went from having breakout all over my face to have three small pimples in 4 days. However, make sure to start with 1 teaspoon then every 4-5 days increase by 1/4 teaspoon. If you jump in and start taking 1 tablespoon it can break you out. This stuff is amazing, give it a try! Just be cautious before putting it on your face, it can be pore-clogging.

Pros

  • *Reduces acne
  • *Helps balance hormones
  • *Kills candida
  • *Tastes amazing

Cons

  • *Have to start slow
  • moderate
  • for about a week
  • $ 10
  • I recommend using this treatment.

I recommend to eat coconut oil daily. I believe that it is very healthy and helps alot of processes in the body. But when I took alot of it every day, I didn't notice a reduction in acne at all. But I definitely think it could help others with acne. This possibly helps with candida too.

Pros

  • Good for overall health
  • digestion easier

Cons

  • none really.
  • didn't help acne.
  • moderately severe
  • for a few months
  • $ 13
  • I recommend using this treatment.

I read all the fantastic reviews and was stoked (I ignored the few reviews that warned against using it). I attributed the initial breakout to the "purging," only the purging didn't stop. I even emailed the author of "coconut cures" when I started to get concerned. His wife responded saying to keep with it... and so I did (I was still hopeful). Finally, a month later (I used it three-ish months) I accepted the reality that this highly comogenic stuff was not purifying my skin... oh no. It was clogging it in the worst possible way. Fast forward two months and I am still dealing with this nightmere. I have officially gone from "mild" to severe. All in all, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Pros

  • None

Cons

  • It ruined my skin :(
  • moderately severe
  • I do not recommend using this treatment.

I have skin problems since I was 13 years old. I ve tried everything! Really everything. I have been to a hundred doctors, tried creams, antibiotics, homeopathic stuff, hormonal supplements. Nothing really helped me. My skin was always very oily and all my pores were clogged no matter how often I was cleaning my pores..after a few hours everything was clogged again.

I was very desperate, sometimes I did not even leave home because I felt so uncomfortable.

I ve read the reviews about coconut oil and I am so happy that i gave it a shot! I didn't want to try this at first because I always had the feeling that coconut made me break out a lot. But well...I was hopeless and I thought I will try this before I go to the doctor for Accutane (I am really afraid if the side effects, especially the one on your psyche).

And well it feels like a wonder to me! After a bad break out during the first week my skin started to get clear day by day! My skin is not oily anymore! Some of my pores are still clogged but they don't develop into pimples or cysts!

This is how I apply it: In the morning: First I wash my face and on wet face I rub a small amount of oil (Please use organic oil, its white and solid when cold). I wait till my face dries and after about 3-5 min I take a paper tissue to remove the remaining oil. Then I put BPO 2,5% on. No moisturizer on top. Thats it. But you can put make up on top if I want...I always put make up or powder on top.

In the evening: Just the part with the oil and no BPO.

If you are desperate with your acne, give it a try! I know every skin in different but just don't give up after you break out at the beginning!

I also started to eat 1 teaspoon of this oil every day. Have the feeling that its even working better now.

Pros

  • I got clear skin from thin product...first time after 13 years!!!

Cons

  • made me break out at the beginning. But my skin started to get clear after around one week.
  • moderately severe
  • for a few weeks
  • $ 400
  • I recommend using this treatment.

OK I need to explain how to use this for acne because a lot of people have left bad reviews due to it making them break out, that's perfectly natural and part of the process.

Coconut Oil pulls out the infection from deep inside the acne, and in doing do it will bring the spots to a head. If there's potential for it to become a whitehead it's going to do so eventually. A lot of the over the counter products make a cosmetic difference but don't fight the underlying cause.

Think of it as purging. The coconut oil brings the infection out and then when the spot bursts you know it's really been dealt with.

Make sure you put it on with clean skin and hands so you don't trap any dirt between the oil and your skin. I almost always apply cider vinegar or lemon juice first.

Doing this a couple of times a day should bring out the whiteheads within a day or two, after a week or two you'll see the true benefits. So basically you just have to stick at it! It's a long term treatment that delivers long term results, definitely my go to for spots and acne

Pros

  • Makes you smell all lovely
  • all natural

Cons

  • none!
  • light
  • for about a month
  • $ 8
  • I recommend using this treatment.

I wouldn't recommend coconut oil to anyone who has acne-prone skin at all. I used coconut oil in a sugar scrub on my shoulders and back and I broke out insanely.

Pros

  • Makes your skin silky smooth.

Cons

  • Comedogenic, clogged my pores. Left me with inflamed red pustules.
  • moderate
  • for a day or two
  • $ 15
  • I do not recommend using this treatment.

I've had moderate acne for 20+ years that has been, until now, well controlled with BP and glycolic acid. In attempt to step away from harsher methods, I researched more natural approaches and decided to give extra virgin, unrefined coconut oil, 2x a day, a try.

My face broke out with little white pustules on Day 3. Within the week, my entire face (including places that generally weren't active) was covered with what could be described as a carpet of black and whiteheads. Hoping this was simply the "healing crisis" I had read about, I continued for an additional 3 weeks. That was a huge mistake. My face was so swollen and active with acne that it actually hurt to wash it.

The good news: A few days after stopping the coconut oil, the generalized swelling went down.

The bad news: The carpet of little bumps is taking forever to go away, even with the reintroduction of BP and glycolic acid. In addition, I have developed ~ for the first time in my life ~ painful, deep, cystic acne. It has been a full 6 weeks since I've stopped applying coconut oil, and my skin is still a mess, with dark marks from old cysts lingering and brand new, huge bumps popping up next to them.

Please be careful if you decide to give CO a try. If you think it's making your acne worse, then STOP! Do not continue like I did with blind faith and desperate hope for clear skin. (If you find yourself stuck with a giant jar of the stuff, it's great for baking, and it is an effective deodorant.)

I will come back and leave an update on my "recovery" from this for those of you who are curious or may be going through the same thing. Take good care, and I hope you find what works for you!

Pros

  • Awesome for baking.
  • Works well as a natural deodorant.

Cons

  • Can make acne spin wildly out of control.
  • moderately severe
  • for about a month
  • $ 8
  • I do not recommend using this treatment.
