I take minocycline 50mg twice a day. I have moderate to severe acne and i've been prescribed this medicine about 4 years ago. Back then, I took it for 40 days and my skin cleared up real nice; and the effect lasted for about 2 years. Now I'm on minocycline again and the results are obvious. My skin cleared up nicely. This is not a drug to take in the summer season; no or very little exposure to sun is required during the treatment. In case of sun exposure your skin turns red quickly and you may develop rashes.

Our daughter started using minocycline when she was 14 and used it for two years for acne on her back and face. The drug did show some positive results relating to acne serverity. When was first prescribed, the doctor warned us about some possible connection between minocycline and Non-Hodkins Lymphoma (NHL), or cancer. Our daughter was diagnosed with NHL in her senior year of high school. She continues to recover from very serious complications from NHL.
I would say DO NOT use of this drug!

Hi, i have been taking minocycline for about three years now and I have noticed blueish spots on my legs that look like bruises. I play sports so I thought that they were just bruises but they have not gone away for months. Are they a side effect of minocycline which I take two times a day? Should I stop taking it?

I have been on Minocycline for about a month. At first when I took it I got pimples in areas I had never gotten pimples before. But then after a while it seemed to start working. But now two more pimples have formed. I'm on three other topical medications though. The derm told me to reduce the dose to once a day so I will see how that works out. I really hope it gets rid of the acne, it's really getting too be much.

I hvae been taking minomycin for around three weeks now, and am noticing a very slight improvement in some areas. However, I have also experienced a rash, similar to groups of small mosquito bites flaring up sprodically around my body (legs, arms, stomach, back). The itching is also quite frustrating. Has anyone else experienced this, and can anyone offer a solution...

I was on Amoxocillin (250mg 2x a day) for mild cystic acne for years (about 10) since my early 20s with no real side effects. When my insurance changed several months ago and I couldn't see my regular dermotologist anymore, I thought I would see if my skin would be okay without the drugs. (I didn't like the idea of being on drugs for so long and I thought that maybe I had grown "too old" to have acne anymore; silly me.) HUGE MISTAKE.
I developed terrible cystic acne; deep, infected cysts the size of large lima beans on my face, hairline, and neck. I am still crossing my fingers that some of the scarring fades.
Finally ran to a new dermotologist who put me on Minocycline.
I'v been on this drug for three weeks now; haven't seen anything miraculous from this drug yet--but 'tis early, I thought.
Then, I woke up two days ago (Christmas) with this terrible rash on my forehead--nowhere else--just my forehead. I look like I've been attacked by hundreds of mosquitoes. It doesn't itch; it just looks awful--and I don't want anyone to see me.
Came to the internet to research "minocycline" and "rash"--found this site.
I wonder if my rash is minocycline-related; it's just so odd that it is confined to my forehead and that it does not itch. I just look terrible.
After reading what some of you have written, I am calling this new dermotologist first thing in the morning. Joint pain, skin discoloration, and lupus!
I do wish that I had never gone off Amoxocillin, though... It really worked like a charm for me for years. I didn't realize how good I had it.
If I find that this rash is minocycline-related, then my agreeability rating would drop to a "1", as not only has it given me a terrible facial rash that looks worse than my initial acne problem--but I do feel rather "off" on this stuff (as others have described)--something I would gladly put up with if a) it really cleared up my skin and b) didn't have other, more severe side effects.

I was prescribed mino for PeriOral Dermatitis. The 1st week of taking it, the med cleared up the persistant rash that had driven me nuts for 6 months. Now 2 weeks after taking it, I have an acne break out on other areas of my face that have never been a problem in my life! I have been reading what others are posting & there seems to be a pattern after 2 weeks of being on the med, acne gets worse. I also have soar lymph glnds in my neck.

I have been on generic minocycline for years--I went off once for about 4 years (to try to get pregnant), and my skin did okay with just topicals for several months, then I had some of the nastiest zits I'd ever had. It took about 8 months to settle back down, and for several years, my skin broke out about the same amount as it had on Micocin. Then I started getting zits on my scalp, so my derm. put me back on minocycline. I've been on it for another 4 years at this point, and I'm scared to go off again, thinking I will get that same terrible flare as last time. However, my teeth are looking discolored, I have some patches of light and dark pigmentation on my face, and I have recurring anal itching--all possible side effects of the mino. My derm wants to take me off and try Accutane. I'm 40 yrs. old and have had acne since I was 18--I'm tired of this!
