#3346294 Accutane - How Bad Is The Initial Breakout?

Posted by whereismymind on 06 May 2013 - 01:10 PM

Hey-

I'm almost 2 months into my second course of Accutane.  Both times I've had breakouts in the beginning, but they weren't really WORSE than before, just DIFFERENT. My spots came and left more quickly and I broke out a little in places where my skin is normally clear. Around the 2 month mark I was pretty much clear on my first course and at this point on my second course I'm clear, though I could breakout again for all I know.

As far as Accutane and depression goes, I do think that you have to be very careful, but I also think that people make Accutane sound scarier than it actually is.  It's always the horror stories that come through the media.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Thanks for the suggestions on the lip balms- I'll check them out!

After my first course all I used was Cetaphil cleanser, nothing else.  My acne started coming back about a year later and then I started using Spironolactone which cleared it up for another few years.

This time i'm definitely planning on using a topical (probably Differin or low-strength Retin-A) once I'm done with this course.  I think that it's really important to find something to maintain your clear skin after Accutane.  My skin looked totally transformed after my first course so I thought I was cured for life but nope! It definitely made a huge lasting improvement but the perfect porcelain skin didn't last.

If anyone has a topical or other treatment (lasers, peels, etc.) to recommend for post-Accutane maintenance I'd love to hear about it.  I can't use BP so I was thinking of using a retinoid and maybe the IPL laser for redness.

Hey- have you thought about trying Spirolactone? It's for hormonal acne but my acne symptoms were never very hormonal and it worked for me too.  It's very cheap so it could be a good route since you don't have insurance. I don't know the cost without insurance, but it has been described as one of the least expensive medications.  I got it prescribed from my regular doctor, so no dermatologist appt. required,
