#3482989 Going Off Birth Control

Posted by CarpeMomentum on 01 June 2015 - 06:16 PM

Just wanted to drop a note and say hang in there.  Hormonal treatments take at least 3 months to even make a dent.  I had an initial breakout on both Ocella and Spiro.  I became clear after 4 1/2 months of worse skin then when I started.  But after that things got clear! I had to go off BCP for the rest of my life starting this February and stayed on Spiro.  I upped it another 25mg to help makeup for the hormonal affects of the BCP.  I could probably have upped it 50mg, but things are good.  I am a bit oilier but it is not leading to any big breakouts or problems.  I've made it about 3 1/2 months now, so I am feeling good about balancing myself.  Please hang in there.  Spiro is a god send.  I know you can't take it while pregnant, so hope all works out for you.  sending positive thoughts your way!

#3473632 Ortho Tri + Spiro Vs. Diane 35?

Posted by CarpeMomentum on 04 March 2015 - 02:14 PM

It sounds like you may have hormonal acne as most women do.  I am on Spiro and was recently on Spiro + Yas.  I would throw a hissy fit.  My derm was the first person to prescribe this to me, but she really had no experience.  My endocrinologist now prescibes it for me as it is a treatment for PCOS.  Perhaps you can try that route?  I feel for you and hope you can find a solution.  There may be another physician in the area that would be open if you bring your current Rx, perhaps have your Dr in San Fran write a note?  It is off label use in the US as well, but more mainstream for PCOS sufferers.  I wish you the best.

Just wanted to sign in and share with everyone how appreciative I am for this board and helping me in achieving clear skin.  It was a lifelong battle and finally was diagnosed with PCOS and started Spironolactone and Ocella (generic Yasmin) last year, Dec 30th to be exact.  What followed were 4+ months of worsening skin, depression, anxiety and I almost gave up.  Then the medicine finally started working.

Medicine may not be right for everyone, but I can say that it changed my life.  I dreamed of clear skin, not worrying about my skin, living a carefree life.  It took 33 years, but I was able to find this.  To all the ladies that have hormonal concerns and considering, I am happy to share my experience and urge you to continue to look into testing- hormones, endocrinologist, etc.  I continue to be thankful and pray on a daily and weekly basis for all the support and information you all provided me.  I am feeling thankful and sending love to all of you on here.

#3438258 Spironolactone

Posted by CarpeMomentum on 27 June 2014 - 10:21 AM

I've been taking it now for about a month and a half. I feel like my breaking out has decreased, I broke out a bit more last week just because it was that time of the month, but nothing cystic. I get a a small pimple now on average maybe once every other day. I actually lost 5 pounds so far, but my bust has increased in size I think. does this sound normal?

Yup!  All pretty normal.  It took me about 3 1/2 months to finally break through but my dose was low.  I did gain weight after upping it to 75mg with BC.  My boobs did grow a cup size plus.

Hey there!  Just thought I'd share my experience.  I started on Spiro 50mg  and Yasmin on 12/30 last year.  It took about 4 months to stop the constant breaking out.  I had mild hormonal acne prior due to PCOS.  It was only after I upped the Spiro to 75 mg with Yasmin on the 4th month that the oil production slowed down and consistent clarity began.  I did gain a little bit of weight due to the estrogen increase, I also grew at least a cup size maybe 2.  I just have to watch my diet and may go on Metformin to balance my insulin, issue with PCOS.  How are things going for you?

#3431677 Spironolactone Breakout With Increased Dosage

Posted by CarpeMomentum on 14 May 2014 - 06:26 PM

Yes, I experienced a breakout when I added Yasmin, I started at 50mg, had an IB, added Yasmin had an IB.  3 months later added 25 mg and had a small breakout and then a week later clear ever since.  Hope you have continued success!!

any new updates with the increased doses people?

I currently upped my does from 25 mg to 50 mg about 5 days ago, and I am experiencing what seems to be an IB. I was on 25 mg for about 6 months before upping the dose with out any kind of outbreak.

#3428305 I Need Some Encouragement

Hang in there!!! I have been there wayyyy too many times before and know how painful of a place it is to be.  I did always feel better going in to work and not letting acne stop me fully.  No matter how many people tell you that no one notices, it can be so hard.  But they don't notice.  I had a terrible breakout from starting Spiro and BCP and left me in your situation for a few months, wishing days, weeks and months by.  You will get through this, you will heal, life will get better.  Focus on just getting through today, baby steps.  Breathe, stay away from mirrors.  Dress up a bit if you can, see if that helps you feel any better about yourself.  Sending you lots of positive thoughts and hugs today!

Yay!!  So happy to hear. I'm just under 4 months and the increase to 75mg in the last few weeks really really made a difference.  The oil production is about 50% less, so I hope you also see that as well.  Fingers crossed the small increase helps even that much more.  I am so excited to see consistent results and hope you continue as well.  :)

Ok 6 months into Spiro and as of today my skin is clear smile.png I did get one cyst right under my lip that hurt like hell but its now gone and I don't have one single pimple! I asked my gyno to change my birth control to Ortho Tri-Cyclen and she did so I took my first pill today. I really hope the new birth control and the continued Spiro will keep me clear from here on out. I have a dermatologist appointment on Tuesday and I think he's going to up my Spiro, if he does I will ask for 75 mg and wait on going up to 100 mg. I'm really happy with my progress.

#3426583 Spiro For 2Nd Time

Posted by CarpeMomentum on 16 April 2014 - 07:26 AM

Hey there!  I upped my dose from 50 to 75mg about 2 weeks ago, still in conjunction with Yasmin. So I am at around 100mg and seeing a bit less oil.  I was SO fearful of another IB.  I did experience a small one, but honestly NOTHING like the first time at all.  It's already cleared.  I also did have a migraine followed by headache for a week and 1/2.  Drink lots of water and just be ready to deal with whatever comes.  a week or 2 of breakouts is so much easier to deal with then continual.  I wish you continued improvement!!

Hi beautiful Maria smile.png I just wanted to check in and see how you are doing. I'm about to up my dose to 100mg next week when I finally see my dermatologist after 6 months. I'm so worried about another IB I cant take anymore. The 50mg of Spiro seems to be working but not as good as I thought it should be by now. I'm still getting a cyst here and there. I've also been cutting out foods that I thought I could finally eat again like chocolate grrrr. Well, I hope the 100mg will work better for you, keep me posted on your progress smile.png

#3425299 Spironolactone Log

Posted by CarpeMomentum on 09 April 2014 - 02:35 PM

Hey there!  Reading through your log and just wanted to send some positive thoughts your way.  You are nearing a month soon and that's progress.  I've been on Spiro a little over 3 months now. The first 3 months 50mg and Yasmin, now 75mg and Yasmin.  It took a few months of breakouts off and on to finally have more of a clearing phase at 3 months.  The first month was inflammed, started doxy in addition to Spiro and then it was small little comedones all on my cheeks/jawline/chin.  Slowly cleared and just have a few clogged pores on my whole face which is a slight miracle after the first month.  Exfoliation and good cleansing routine helped the process along and keep my PIH down a bit.  I did have headaches from the increase in dose, but other than that.  I don't think you will become any "worse" than you are now.  My first month was definitely a shocking one as it got way worse than I've ever broken out before.  Keep your head up and keep on your spiro journey, it does work but it takes a whole hell of a lot of patience.  Mine was tested continuously and this board and these women really helped me through it.

#3423482 Spiro Dosage

Posted by CarpeMomentum on 31 March 2014 - 09:04 AM

Hey there, I do think it is a very personal thing based on severity of acne, levels of hormones, metabolism, etc.  I am about 125 lbs, 5'5 and tested with mildy high testosterone levels.  I am on 50 mg of Spiro in addition to Yasmin which is about 25 mg and helps to balance out the other hormones.  I do have baby blond hairs on my face as well, so not sure if taking a higher dose would help with that.  Either way I don't have any side effects from the medication except for frequently having to use the restroom.  I'd prefer to be on the lowest dose that my body can handle because the scare of sparing potassium and other side effects.  Some women will work their way up to 100mg and then after they clear try to ween down to a more maintenance dose. It does take time to take affect, took me about 3 months to slow down breakouts and clear.  I still have some clogged pores I am contending with but very different then breakouts before and during the initial breakouts month 1-2+.  You are pretty tiny, so maybe starting with 50-75mg.  After reading through all of the reviews on here of Spironolactone in the Reviews section, many women cleared on 50mg which gave me tons of hope.  I am still fairly oily which is fine with me as long as the breakouts aren't happening.  I am seeing an Endocrinologist this week so if I get any additional info on dosing I would be happy to share with you.  Good luck on starting your Spiro journey, feel free to reach out anytime.

#3422753 Pcos Cystic Acne Quit Dairy?

Posted by CarpeMomentum on 26 March 2014 - 06:07 PM

It may not have to be forever :)  Many women have been able to get control of their acne with Spiro and/or BC and can enjoy dairy once in a while with no issue. If you can eliminate, clear yourself and then slowly add back in that may help.  Some are affected more than others, I know nuts tend to cause problems for me as well.  It's a live and learn, but you will get there.  Reach out anytime!

Hi, thanks so much for replying your input, it's helped a great deal. I will give spironolactone a go. I really need to try this non dairy approach also and I'm already caffeine and sugar free.

#3422652 Pcos Cystic Acne Quit Dairy?

Posted by CarpeMomentum on 26 March 2014 - 08:01 AM

Many women on here with PCOS are using Spironolactone as a treatment for cystic acne.  Not everyone wants to or can go the route of medication to control acne, but it gets to the root cause by targeting the hormones. And yes dairy use to break me out so I did stop this, it can be chock full of hormones which aggravates the already existing condition.  I am on Spiro 50mg as well as Yasmin, Yasmin has a component of spironolactone in it that blocks androgens that is why many women have success using it in their battle against hormonal acne.  Hope this has helped a bit!

Hi everyone I'm new here and desperate for help to shift this awful cystic acne I have lived with since puberty. I am now 26 and I'm never spot free. I've read a lot of people quit dairy and say they become totally spot free I was wondering how many of you on here have tried it and what the results are.

#3420168 Anyone Low Progesterone/high Testosterone- Spiro And Pregnenolone?

Posted by CarpeMomentum on 13 March 2014 - 06:42 PM

First off let me start by saying THANK YOU!  It is making me feel so much better to see someone else has been through this journey, it definitely feels lonely when you are in the thick of it.  I am really grateful to be working with this natropath and can't wait to see some of the positive effects from the pregnenolone.  Sleeping and being stress.anxiety free/or freer would be a god send right now.  Everything happens for a reason, and seeing her was hopefully a final piece to this puzzle.

She also sent a Rx to a compounding pharmacy for Niacinimide with green tea and vitamin c.  I've been deathly afraid of using Retin A, never filled the Rx and have clindamycin sitting on my counter and deathly afraid of starting something that will eventually just cause issue anyways.  Tonight I am going to hang my hat up and start the second leg of my journey.  I will keep you posted on how things go.  I would appreciate pictures if you do feel up to sharing!

Sorry you're having a rough time! ): I hope that this new information from your tests will help you clear up quickly.

I had high androgens (testosterone) and low progesterone/high estrogen but am now clear, so it is possible to fix everything. You can read more in my topic here. I took down the pics but I can send them to you if you'd like. I had most of the side effects you listed (except oily skin) and progesterone helped with all of them. I still occasionally use progesterone but have found I don't need it nearly as often. I also still use DIM but at a much lower dose and less frequently... I guess hormones can eventually regulate themselves sometimes! (:

My biggest tip with progesterone is that if you are breaking out or have symptoms return when you take a break, to try using it daily instead of just days 12-28 or whatever. This is completely safe. When I first started using NPC the symptoms would rush back if I took a break. After months of using it daily and getting my progesterone levels up consistently, it no longer happened. 25mg is a pretty low dose too... most progesterone creams suggest to use 40mg daily.

Spiro should help with excess androgens and it can also be estrogenic, which might be good for you. Even though you are still breaking out at 11 weeks, please continue to be patient — it took 4 months for me to START clearing on it and I wasn't completely clear until 6 months. I don't know about Yasmin combined with spiro but some have had success with that combo. Again, it would probably help if you needed to up your estrogen. If you don't see results from spiro by six months, I would start to wonder if Yasmin was causing the problem.

Anyway, I hope that helps! If you have any more questions feel free to ask. Good luck! I wish you the best and clear skin! (:

#3419848 Just Started Spiro-Looking For Advice

Posted by CarpeMomentum on 12 March 2014 - 06:49 AM

Hey Unique Cactus, saw your post in the other thread I am on.  You are welcome to read through my spiro journey in my content.  It seems that everyone is pretty different with timing and when they see results.  Hormones are such a personal thing, and then you add in what other topicals or BC the person is taking.  For my I had mild but persistent hormonal acne from major shift in hormones caused by bodybuilding and intense training. Started Spiro 12/30 and Yasmin 2 weeks after.  I had a terrible IB the 2nd/3rd week of inflammed spots that was way worse then when I started.  Derm put me on Doxy 200mg a day (still on it) to calm inflammation.  Had a second IB of tons of small bumps/clogged pores sitting under the surface that started around week 4 or so and has been a ridiculously slow process of each week these clogs inflamming or coming to a head.  It's like they take turns, chin flares then clears, left side flares then clears, etc.  This was in areas that I wasn't even breaking out in before. So I have encorporated a great exfoliation plan and clearing these slowly but surely.  The hormonal flare ups or spots seem to have slowed down, maybe 1 a week or every other week and clears shortly after.  Things have changed since the beginning.   I hit 2 1/2 months last Sunday and on my 3rd pack of Yasmin.  I still have a fair way to go and then it will be clearing the PIH that has been leftover from the IBs.

I hope you have a great experience and stay strong, it may start working super fast for you.  I was prescribed Retin A my 2nd month in and decided against it as I didn't want another initial breakout.  It would have definitely speed up things in regards to clearing the clogged pores, I decided to use AHA/BHA product and peels instead.  Look forward to hearing about your journey!!

Hello, long time browser first time posting!

So I guess I'll go into a short bio- I've suffered with acne since I was about 11 years old. I used to have horrible cysts, would cancel plans, the worst self esteem--it was bad. I went on Accutane in 2012 and it did wonders for my skin. After 6 months of treatment my derm took me off of it because I was clear. My acne then crept up later in the year and I was put back on Accutane and again it worked its magic. However, my acne has just recently crept back with a vegence.

Thankfully I haven't been getting those nasty cysts anymore however I still get clogged pores, whiteheads and blackheads. My derm told me it was hormonal acne and put me on Sprio (100mg) and low dose Retin A (0.025) I'm also on Sprintec BCP.

I just started 5 days ago, I havent had any new bumps form (knock on wood!) but I just want to know when you all started seeing results. And if you did have an initial breakout, was it similar to your own normal breakouts or worse?

Would really like some advice! Acne sufferers, unite! =)
