Yes, all should be working again now. Sorry for the delay. It was particularly difficult to find the cause.

#3410625 Question About Pictures

Posted by real maverick on 27 January 2014 - 08:56 AM

So the question is - can I post pics and then delete them after a few days when I know the people I am intending to share them with have seen them? I.e. does that delete button work forever? I know on some web sites you only have a certain amount of time to edit or delete a post. Thanks!

Hi Kim, the best thing to do, would be to attach the photos to your friends in a private message here on Acne.org. That way, only the people you want to see them, will.

#3405896 Adding New Products To The Reviews Section

Posted by real maverick on 06 January 2014 - 07:47 AM

Hi WishClean, you can add a new product to the database by visiting the following URL: http://www.acne.org/...&item_name=test and then click the button 'add new item to our database'. We are working on making this function easier to find.

I will also pass your suggestions on to the team, thanks for the feedback.

As an acne sufferer, I can safely say that 99% of the products/treatments/ebooks out there are rubbish or even scams. How could Dan possibly allow advertising of a product that is almost surely going to be a scam? I wouldn't be comfortable with it at all.

Example email is from somebody who's written an ebook to cure acne, offering $50,000 to advertise on Acne.org for a month.

While this may then allow Dan to lower the price of the product, it would result in thousands of kids being exposed to this scam as a result.  At least when people post this rubbish on the forum, our awesome members quickly call them out for what they are.

What is a scam and what is not, is open to interpretation of course, so it's best to just accept zero advertising. None acne related companies have no interest in advertising here and have no relevance or value to our users.

Finally, the products ARE insane value for money and while selling our soul to the devil might allow us to lower then further, it's just not worth the trade off.

#3385818 New Shopping Cart Is Live!

Posted by real maverick on 01 October 2013 - 06:50 AM

We have just hit the big red button and launched our new store. It has been a real labour of love for the entire team and we're really proud of the finished product.

The most notable thing about the new store, is that it's located right here on acne.org. You can visit the new store at store.acne.org or by clicking the store tab in the main menu.

responsive-design.png

As part of the upgrade, your account has been upgraded to a new One Account. In a nutshell this means you'll be able to use the community and the store with a single account. Learn more about One Account.

There are several other notable features:

  • Responsive design: The new store features a brand new design that is responsive. This means the new store works on desktop, mobile devices and tablets. The store will automatically adapt to the size of your device. The design is also cleaner, easier to navigate and much faster to checkout.
  • Improvements to shipping: free shipping on orders over $40 (within the US), flat rate shipping (within the US), shipping on almost any individual product or kit will be cheaper than before (worldwide).
  • Kit subscriptions: All kits can now be purchased as a subscription and there is now a 5% discount on all kit subscriptions. Subscriptions are now much easier to create and manage.

Please check out the new store and let us know what you think.

#3382107 Benzoyl Peroxide Considered By Fda To Be "safe And Effective"

Posted by real maverick on 12 September 2013 - 07:51 AM

The safety of Benzoyl Peroxide is periodically brought up by board members as an area of concern. Questions about whether it may increase skin cancer risk or cause DNA damage (and thus damage or accelarate the aging the skin) are the most common concerns. Given those concerns, I thought this information from the FDA was important to share with the messageboard members.

The FDA has updated its safety classification of Benzoyl Peroxide to a Category I (Safe and Effective). In 1991, the classification was listed as a type III, which meant that more data was needed before the FDA could determine the actual safety classification (it was never considered to be "unsafe" though). The body of the research conducted since that time has lead the FDA to change the classification to a safe and effective. I have the full article from the Federal Registry, for those who are interested in reading more details. I plan to post it in another thread. The abstract is below, and I highlighted a few points from the article as well.

Classification of Benzoyl Peroxide as Safe and Effective and Revision of Labeling to Drug Facts Format; Topical Acne Drug Products for Over-The-Counter Human Use; Final Rule AGENCY: Food and Drug Administration,HHS. ACTION: Final rule. SUMMARY: We, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), are issuing this final rule to include benzoyl peroxide as a generally recognized as safe and effective (GRASE) active ingredient in over-the-counter (OTC) topical acne drug products. In addition, this final rule includes new warnings and directions required for OTC acne drug products containing benzoyl peroxide. We are also revising labeling for OTC topical acne drug products containing resorcinol, resorcinol monoacetate, salicylic acid and/or sulfur to meet OTC drug labeling content and format requirements in a certain FDA regulation. This final rule is part of our ongoing review of OTC drug products and represents our conclusions on benzoyl peroxide in OTC acne drug products.

Additional points of interest: -They did not find BPO to be a genotoxic substance, which basically means they do not believe that it damages DNA. They go on to add that even though BPO has been shown in research to create oxidative damage, that in humans, there are oxidative repair mechanisms that would likely prevent benzoyl peroxide from causing DNA damage. -They did not find BPO to be carcinogenic. They state: "We have reviewed a number of animal studies examining the carcinogenic potential of benzoyl peroxide and conclude that benzoyl peroxide is not a carcinogen." They also determined that there was no evidence to indicate that BPO is a photocarcinogen.

They are requiring an update to the warning labels on BPO products as well. Any OTC products that contain BPO will need to have the following warnings on the label: - Avoiding unnecessary sun exposure - Not using on very sensitive skin - Keeping away from the eyes, lips, and mouth - Cautioning that benzoyl peroxide may bleach hair or dye fabric They will also require a direction for drug products containing benzoyl peroxide to use a sunscreen when going outside.

#3381351 New Responsive Design

Posted by real maverick on 08 September 2013 - 11:15 AM

The Acne.org forum has historically used a special theme for mobile phones but this was never an ideal solution. First and foremost it didn't work at all with tablets, making the tablet experience sub-par. Sometimes the mobile theme wouldn't trigger or users wouldn't wrongly be served the mobile skin on a desktop browser. There were also many missing features in the mobile skin.

We've been working on a solution in the form of a responsive design. This means the forum will now respond to your devices and it's size. If you make your browser window smaller, the size of the forum will respond in real-time and when you visit on your mobile phone, you'll be served the exact same website, with all of the features but in a format that works perfectly on your phone.

Your feedback will help us ensure you get the best possible experience regardless of what device you're using.

#3363915 I'd Like To Offer Free Shipping. Kinda Complex. Need Your Input Please.

Posted by real maverick on 04 July 2013 - 08:27 PM

I know and I have said that this is a business, no misunderstanding. But as for being "extremely" dedicated...I have my doubts, seeing how many forums have disappeared, many formerly pinned and useful topics have disappeared, etc. It's a business, I understand, but don't give me this bullcrap.

That's your opinion, but you're dead wrong.

As the webmaster here, I receive emails daily from companies offering ridiculous amounts of money to advertise on acne.org but Dan will not accept advertising. We've just finished working on a new feature in the reviews section, that suggests places to buy the product. The API's we used are setup so that we'd earn commission from the clicks, but Dan was head strong that he didn't want to profit from the links and so all affiliate ID's were removed.

Dan's ethics are incredible.

As far as I'm concerned as long as the final price I pay doesn't change, it's all good. The overall cost does not have to be lower for this to work.

I have no doubts that the cost of shipping puts many people off and I understand why. This move will result in more people trying The Regimen and more peoples lives being changed for the better and thats what matters.

you should just sell the products for the price they cost you and add a litte something to pay for this website and some other expenses

If only it were that simple huh?

Running acne.org is a full time job for several people, it's not something we do in our spare time, we are extremely dedicated. You would be amazed at how much hard work goes in to running acne.org.

If Dan had run acne.org casually in his spare time, the amount of people acne.org and The Regimen have helped, would be a fraction.

#3361975 Update On Acne.org Spf

Posted by real maverick on 27 June 2013 - 11:15 AM

I for one love the fact that you're not willing to sell something that you feel isn't perfect and also willing to test and offer great alternatives. I know when it eventually arrives, it will be crazy awesome.

#3361494 New Features

Posted by real maverick on 25 June 2013 - 03:29 PM

Today we released a number of noteworthy new features.

1. Edit your own reviews

New and existing reviews you make in the product reviews section can now be edited.

To edit a review you've made you can click the red edit button next to your review, alternatively click the "write review" button on the product page and you'll receive a prompt that you've already written a review.

Click "Go to your review" and you'll see a red edit button.

Clicking edit will allow you to edit your review in realtime, where you can change everything from the rating to the review itself.

2. Other noteworthy review section enhancements

You'll also notice there are several new tabs which you can see on the Olay Complete product page. The ingredients tab shows you a list of ingredients and a really useful feature is that it highlights comedogenic ingredients in red.

Screen Shot 2013-06-25 at 22.12.45.png

The "where to buy" tab will show you reputable places to buy the products from. These are direct links to the products and not affiliate links, acne.org is not compensated in any way for clicks to these links.

Screen Shot 2013-06-25 at 22.13.26.png

The "Report" tab allows you to report any issues you find with the product listing i.e. the product is now discontinued.

You'll also notice the new "+ favorite" button which allows you to keep track of all your favorite products. This list is also visible to your friends and other members via your profile.

3. Achievements

This is brand new and you may have already noticed it. At the moment there are 2 areas of the website you can earn achievements, the forum and product reviews section. The main idea of the achievements is it's just a fun way to recognise your contributions at acne.org but also a way for other members to how much you contribute.

Achievements are visible in both the forum and your profile, via the achievements tab.

Screen Shot 2013-06-25 at 21.57.22.png

Screen Shot 2013-06-25 at 21.57.40.png

On the achievements tab, the levels marked in green are levels you've already achieved and those in grey are levels you've not yet achieved. Each level has a corresponding badge, for example for 1 product review you receive a badge "Junior Reviewer". At present the badges are visible in both the forum and profiles, however, the reviews section will also soon reflect your current level i.e "Bronze Reviewer".

There will be new achievements introduced periodically, please feel free to share any ideas of future achievements you'd like to see. i.e. Achievements for number of likes to your reviews or the number of photos you've shared in the gallery etc.

Please let us know if you find any issues or have feedback/questions on any of the new features.
