How Do You Know If Acne Is Hormonal?

07 February 2014 - 12:19 PM

Hello girls,

I have a question for those of you who have hormonal acne.  How do you know it's hormonal for sure?  I'm trying to figure out if mine is.  I used to get nodules and cysts, a lot on my chin but also on my forehead (cheeks have always been pretty clear).  I started taking Diane 35 (regrettably, in some ways) two years ago and haven't had many nodules since then but still get cysts and smaller pimples.  Now, suddenly, I'm getting nodules again, on my forehead and chin.

Since I get acne on my chin a lot, and because my skin did improve on Diane 35 in terms of keeping nodules at bay (until now), is it likely hormonal?  I've never noticed that my skin is different during any particular time of the month, nor has stress ever seemed to have an impact.  I didn't think diet played much of a role either, however, this month I decided to be "healthy" and drink ridiculous amounts of fruit smoothies for the first time in my life and after a few weeks of this, I have nodules on my face.  It could be a coincidence I guess, and Diane 35 just happens to be becoming less effective.

I really hate nodules and I'd forgotten how horrible it is to have them.  I just called my dermatologist too and she doesn't let people come in on short notice and get them injected, so I just have this monstrous lump on my chin and can do absolutely nothing about it.

If anyone has any thoughts on whether or not my acne sounds hormonal, please chime in!!

Edit:  I don't know if this is relevant but I don't seem to be too sensitive to changes in birth control... I've been on and off a few different kinds over the past ten years and never had an initial breakout or had problems after going off them.  That being said, I know even I won't be immune to the post-Diane 35 apocalypse.  I didn't have an initial breakout with Diane, though.

Lots Of Indented Scars Forming... All At Once

03 January 2014 - 11:32 AM

Has anyone ever had a bunch of new indented scars form at almost the same time?

I have an area of my face that has always been a mess despite the rest of my face being decent.  I think years of having cysts over and over again just wrecked the skin in that spot and now it's deciding to collapse into numerous boxcar (I think) scars even though I don't have much active acne (I do have some, as you can see).  Even small pimples that left faint red marks end up indented now, so I'm assuming everything that's currently red will also end up indented.  Not trying to be dramatic, just realistic at this point.

It's really overwhelming to deal with about 8 new indented scars all at the same time.... so much so that instead of writing my thesis, I'm obsessively taking pictures of my scars and perusing this site....

If you were me, what would you do?

I should add that I haven't done anything yet in terms of trying to make things better but I've been on Diane-35 for about 1.5 years to keep the cysts somewhat under control.  I used a topical in the past (maybe 2-3 years ago) but I can't remember what it was called - it wasn't retin-A.  Anyway, whatever it was didn't help after months and months of use so I stopped using it.

If the picture is too blurry to tell what's going on, I'll try another one.  Some of you take such good photos but I haven't been able to master it yet.

EDIT:  First picture is with no make up.  Second picture is with make up, which I think helps distinguish between redness and pitted scars.
