About Me
Hello, I'm Ciara and I am a former acne sufferer.
I started noticing my spots around the age of 12/13 but thought they were due to puberty hence why I thought no more of them. Over the space of about 6-8 months, my skin slowly started to break out more and more.
This progressively got worse up until Summer 2011 (I was 15). At this moment, I had tried topical lotions (Zineryt, Clearskin products and Clearasil), I had tried anti-biotics and Cilest (a form of contraceptive pill that is supposed to help skin problems and breakouts).
My Acne was unbearable, I would look in the mirror every morning and be in floods of tears, that entire summer I became a recluse as I was fearful of people's judgements.
I've always been such a confident, bright young girl. But this really knocked me sideways.
The acne almost started to rule my life, I would rarely go to school without half a make-up shops worth of products on my face. I would hide my face under my long hair to avoid the sun reflecting off the raised areas on my face.
I remember back in year 10, one boy in my Tutor made a small remark towards my skin.
He called me 'lumpy face'.
To many, that would not phase them. But because I knew I was trying so hard to get rid of the spots, it made me feel worse. Everything I was trying came crashing down on top of me.
I had another friend, let's called her Emily. Who was suffering from acne at the same time and I had noticed that her skin had started to clear up. I asked her how she was doing it.
She told me that her Doctor had referred her to a local Dermatologist and she was prescribed Isotretinoin (also known as 'Accutane/Roaccutane' depending on where in the world you're from)!
I immediately phoned my mum and asked her to book me a Doctors appointment.
4 weeks later and I was on Roaccutane! I started to notice I was getting an initial breakout and I immediately thought it was making my skin worse, but eventually it started to clear up.
I was prescribed 60mg a day (3x 20mg tablets) for 4 months.
The side effects however got to me a bit, here are the side effects that I experienced;
