hey guys, thought you might be interested in an update from OP
I've stopped probiotics completely in october after taking them for several months. so far i think probiotics were very detrimental to me and caused a permanent change in my gut flora. i now have severe and frequent gas/bloating everyday (at first i only had constipation). so let those be warned that probiotics aren't harmless nor are they to be messed with...
anyway, i've done some more research and came across something called fecal transplants. yes, it's exactly what it sounds like. you get a donor to "donate" a sample of their poo and then transfer it to you via enema, colonoscope, or nasogastric tube. the theory is that your donor is giving you all of the healthy bacteria in a normal gut so that it can repopulate yours. it's like the ultimate probiotic, except you get the complete set of hundreds of strains instead of just eight. for those of you that have gut issues and a history of antibiotic usage, this might just be your breakthrough. i'm currently in the process of finding a doc to do it with. let me know if anyone is interested
