Why no one mentions this research?

The research has been conducted by the People's Liberation Army General Hospital in Beijing, China, and the paper was published in 2013 in a well-known international peer-reviewed magazine.
The best part is that the paper explicitly claims that during the experiment they managed to successfully restore both epidermis and dermis and all skin appendages in mice - hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands in a full thickness skin wound that was 10 mm in diameter, so it is an amazing breakthrough! I mean everybody knows that those complex 'structures' do not normally grow out of the scar tissue.

i just imagine if hydrogel become reality by 2018 , and it's achieve " scar free healing " ohhh , may be i will run and dance naked in public from extreme happiness , " scars on face " punished me and others so deeply , i hope all this become real ...

Well, take for example hepatitis C virus, which is now curable for the first time in history thanks to a new drug developed by Gilead Sciences and approved by the FDA in 2013/2014. And it is especially good news for Egypt where the prevalence of that virus is the highest in the world (10% or 20% of Egypt's total population):


This article claims the drug has a 100% cure rate, it results in a complete eradication of the virus from the body after 3 or more months of treatment, and virtually has no side effect! Simple as that.  :)

So you see, only a few years ago you could argue that there won't ever be a cure for hepatitis C, that a cure for hepatitis C is something that is 'too good to be true', ‘far distant future’ and so on, but now the dream has finally become a reality, hepatitis C is a curable disease! 

BTW, hepatitis C was first discovered in 1989, so it took scientists 24 years to develop a cure for it, the same is probably true for skin scarring, it would take 20-30 years for scientists to find a cure for it after the first research has begun, and the first serious scarless wound healing research has begun in the mid-1990s, it cannot happen overnight.

Lapis, as far as I know she is associated with the company Avita Medical from Australia which has developed ReCell, because of that she would like to retain a monopoly on the market for treatment of burns and scars over the next 50 years - naturally, she doesn't like competition ... or maybe she believes that burns on large areas of skin will not be curable over the next 50 years? If she thinks that, then maybe it is possible that she is right (to cure large 3rd degree burns you need Star Trek-level technology: very advanced 3D bioprinting, molecular nanotechnology or something similar, although I personally believe that the human skin will be routinely 'manufactured' in laboratories in less than 30 years from now), but small and narrow burns and scars are more easy to treat and will surely be curable in 5 to 20 years from now.

This hour long video is really worth a watch, It really shows you a lot about what's going on currently in the quest for obtaining a way to regenerate instead of scar. Which is a lot.




One thing that is said by the way, is that animals in general scar less than people which reminded me of the scarless results in the mouse using the hydrogel.


Another thing is that it is estimated that it will take at least another 40+ years before people can regenerate completely. That is, if it is possible in the first place.


Nonsense! 40 years from now we will have artificial lab-grown organs (all exepct the brain), the 'human body shop' and life extension therapies so we can live 150 years, people will not die from cancer, heart disease and organ failures, and generally speaking new technologies such as 3D printing, targeted drug deliveries, brain computer interface, tissue engineering and stem cells will reach the stage of almost total perfection, I believe that genomic medicine probably won't reach the stage of total perfection in 40 years, however it will be much more advanced than it is now. And scars will be an ancient history.

And she's a girl, for girls it is more important how they look from the outside than for guys, and of course she cannot wear a long beard to hide her acne scars.

Maldition I'm sorry to see that you suffer so much, you said you're taking some anti-depressants or something, so how old are you and what kind of scars do you have? If you have mild to moderate acne scars than there is no reason for you to be so sad, you can have a longer beard and the problem is partially solved.
And have a little more faith in regenerative medicine!

I can see that you suffer a lot, I recommend you to read the book 'Physics of the Future' (author: Michio Kaku), an entire chapter in that book is devoted to the future of medicine and the whole book content is based on Kaku's interviews with 300 of the world's leading scientists (such as for example Anthony Atala, so that means it is not some SF or pseudo-scientific bullshit), I believe it has been translated into Spanish and you can find it in any bookstore, so I agree with you that genomic medicine will not bear any fruit in the near future, it is over-hyped, however I believe that regenerative medicine is more promising than genomic medicine and it will start bearing fruit in the not too distant future and that the promise of regenerative medicine goes far beyond scarless skin wound healing. And I generally agree with you that if we talk about technology we can conclude that we live in a 'caveman era' (just a few facts: 85% of the produced global energy comes from fossil fuels, that is from dead plants, we still have no cure for cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis,... instead of that we have alternative medicine and homeopathy, gadgets, smartphones, tablets, broadband Internet, GPS, Web 2.0, trash pop culture, MTV, Gangdam Style, Lady Gaga, consumerism, advertising, brands, unhealthy fast food, skyscrapers, multinational companies,...), generally speaking our post-industrial society in which we live is archaic, human relationships and values in the western society are such that somehow everything always comes down to the question who is more physically attractive, who has more successful career, etc. So in that book you can find a lot of info about different experimental technologies that are currently under research and their prospects, the most interesting chapter is about medicine, but other chapters are interesting too, maybe you will feel better if you read it. rolleyes.gif

I would say that it is just basic research, not applied research like the 8020 hydrogel for skin scarring, here is why it is important to create vascular networks for the future of regenerative medicine, if scientists fail to do that they will never be able to create more complex lab-grown organs (from the book 'Physics of the Future' - Michio Kaku, chapter: Future of Medicine):

If your virtual doctor finds something wrong, such as a diseased organ, then he might order a new one to be grown
directly from your own cells. “Tissue engineering” is one of the hottest fields in medicine, making possible a “human
body shop.” So far, scientists can grow skin, blood, blood vessels, heart valves, cartilage, bone, noses, and ears in the
lab from your own cells. The first major organ, the bladder, was grown in 2007, the first windpipe in 2009. So far, the
only organs that have been grown are relatively simple, involving only a few types of tissues and few structures.
Within five years, the first liver and pancreas might be grown, with enormous implications for public health. Nobel
laureate Walter Gilbert told me that he foresees a time, just a few decades into the future, when practically every organ
of the body will be grown from your own cells.
Tissue engineering grows new organs by first extracting a few cells from your body. These cells are then injected
into a plastic mold that looks like a sponge shaped in the form of the organ in question. The plastic mold is made of
biodegradable polyglycolic acid. The cells are treated with certain growth factors to stimulate cell growth, causing
them to grow into the mold. Eventually, the mold disintegrates, leaving behind a perfect organ.
I had the opportunity to visit Anthony Atala’s laboratory at Wake Forest University in North Carolina and witness
this miraculous technology firsthand. As I walked through his laboratory, I saw bottles that contained living human
organs. I could see blood vessels and bladders; I saw heart valves that were constantly opening and closing because
liquids were being pumped through them. Seeing all these living human organs in bottles, I almost felt as if I were
walking through Dr. Frankenstein’s laboratory, but there were several crucial differences. Back in the nineteenth
century, doctors were ignorant of the body’s rejection mechanism, which makes it impossible to graft new organs. Plus,
doctors did not know how to stop the infections that would inevitably contaminate any organ after surgery. So Atala,
instead of creating a monster, is opening an entirely new lifesaving medical technology that may one day change the
face of medicine.
One future target for his laboratory is to grow a human liver, perhaps within five years. The liver is not that
complicated and consists of only a few types of tissue. Lab-grown livers could save thousands of lives, especially those
in desperate need of liver transplants. It could also save the lives of alcoholics suffering from cirrhosis. (Unfortunately,
it could also encourage people to keep bad habits, knowing that they can get replacement organs for their damaged

This TED speaker claims he is able to build nanobots by using so called 'DNA origami' technique:
Really fascinating video if it is really so! The point is that these nanobots are actually an 'intelligent transport' (so to speak) for targeted drug delivery, he says that we basically already have many good drugs for many diseases but the problem is in systematic exposure and side effects, I think that these nanobots could in principle deliver very high doses of toxic chemotherapy drugs exactly at the cancer cells or isotretinoin exactly at the sebaceous glands in the skin and thus cure cancer or acne or whatever other disease quite easily. And I hope this is real and not just another hype, buzz, scam, deception of the public and investors, this is a very futuristic technology so I'm very surprised that we have it now.

The current research was done in mice and rats. If the approach also works with human cells, it could eventually lead to cell therapies for diseases like inherited leukodystrophies — disorders of the brain’s white matter — and multiple sclerosis, as well as spinal cord injuries.
Previous research in rodent disease models has shown that transplanted oligodendrocyte precursor cells derived from embryonic stem cells and from human fetal brain tissue can successfully create myelin sheaths around nerve cells, sometimes leading to dramatic improvements in symptoms.

Creating OPCs from skin cells directly

“Unfortunately, the availability of human fetal tissue is extremely limited, and the creation of OPCs from embryonic stem cells is slow and tedious,” said the study’s senior author, Marius Wernig, MD, assistant professor of pathology and a member of Stanford’s Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine. “It appeared we wouldn’t be able to create enough human OPCs for widespread therapeutic use, so we began to wonder if we could create them directly from skin cells.

My guess is that if we have an experimental technology that is able to repair damaged white matter of the entire nervous system of the mouse (including brain) and thus effectively treat such a terrible and incurable disease such as multiple sclerosis then we shouldn't be so far away from a solution for skin scarring. What do you think about it?

I would say 5 to 20 years, I mean regeneration of existing organs shouldn't be such a big deal, the real challenge for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering is to create new lab grown organs, especially complex ones such as the kidneys. And without some non-controversial source of embryonic stem cells forget about all of it.

Here is another interesting discovery from Johns Hopkins Unviersity, it's a new screening method for pancreatic cancer (it could be used for ovarian and lung cancer too), it was made by a 16 years old teenager, he claims the new method is 400 times more sensitive, 160 times faster, 20000 times less expensive than standard crappy screening method that is used today in hospitals and it has 90% accuracy (that means false positives and false negatives in diagnostics are rare):

Pancreatic cancer is the deadliest of all cancers (5 year survival rate is just 5.5%) because it cannot be detected before it is too late, so our 'modern medicine' is so extremely crappy that is beyond comprehension, now with this new screening method pancreatic, ovarian and lung cancer could be detected in the eariest stages and realitvely easily cured (at least I hope so) , so scar free healing and complete regeneration over 3rd degree burns and this new screening method for panceratic, lung and ovarian cancers are two really significant breakthroughs in medicine made by JHU (at least I hope so) and both are basically very simple things. smile.png

This hype cycle was so true in the past for so many new technologies and discoveries in so many different fields of science and technology, I believe that this hype cycle could be applied to scarless skin healing too, and as I can see the state of mind of so many people here on this message board is in that phase 'Trough of Disillusionment', so I can say 'Slope of Enlightenment' and 'Plateau of Productivity' phases are yet to come. smile.png
