YAY! I am writing now to say that after 8 years of suffering from moderate- severe hormonal acne around my lower jaw/ cheeks and tiny acne bumps on my forehead, AND Pityrosporum folliculitis on my chest and back - I AM CLEAR!!
I REMEMBER MY FIRST POST. I was crying because I felt so hopeless . . . my how things have changed!!
There is hope to all of you out there.
Here is what worked for me. Remember, it is different for everyone.
History: I have tried EVERYTHING. Came off birth control (made it worse actually, still off it though!), tried anti fungal drugs for the PF (worked to some degree to control it from spreading), allll the acne topical and oral drugs you could think of (which probably made my PF worse, since antibiotics make it grow).
What convinced me: My boyfriend is in med school and has glorious skin. When he was a teenager he had really really bad cystic acne all over his cheeks. I've seen pics, it was severe. He went on a 6 month treatment course at a high dose. He explained to me how your liver over time will rid the body of the toxins and that it is a wonderful organ for regenerating and healing itself. I decided to eat well and not drink while I was on accutane, and still avoid alchohol to give my liver a break. He said from what he's seen so far, accutane seems to really be the only permanent solution out there, and that docs should be willing to give it out in lower doses to people who have been suffering with it chronically for years.
Treatment: I weigh 120lbs and was prescribed 20 mgs of accutane per day for 3 months. I bought the NO NAME brand, it was alot cheaper. I've realized for a long time now that no matter what products you use, if you are truly acne prone, nothing seems to help! However, I used:
- a mild cleanser (spectro gel),
- makeup remover (water based, I wear foundation for scars, make sure you get ALL your makeup off always b4 bed!!)
- SHEA BUTTER straight up as a moisturizer at night. I did not was my face in the morning because I found that it aggravated my dry skin, and foudn tat the shea was nice on my skin in the morning to apply makeup. DO NOT APPLY SHEA BUTTER RIGHT BEFORE YOU DO YOUR MAKEUP! Your makeup won't hold at all!! It will go into ever crease and look funny by the end of the day.
The shea butter was used all over my body while I was on the 20mgs. Do not get a diluted form, you have to get the real goods, 100% shea. I bought my at Whole Foods.
As a result, I was able to control my dryness, and would apply it to any dry patches or the beginnings of excema before it became a problem.
I also drank TONS of water. Always have a water bottle with you, because you will be thirsty often!
Iniitial breakout. It was wierd. Just big cysts would appear randomly the first week all over the place. And then out of no where they stopped. Just getting the leftover crap out I guess, who knows!
Joint stiffness ( during the first month, but I was also doing yoga teacher training so not sure what was causing it! Just stay warm and active, try taking a teaspoon of flax oil every morning to keep things lubed up!)
Also, my lips were horrible. UNTIL I figured out the best thing to use was polysporin and vaseline ALL the time. Particularly on the outer corners of the lips. They were really bad, and my doc told me that they weren't healing because they were infected. She prescribed me fuciden cream, but I tried polysporin first and it worked! MAde things much easier for the duration of my meds.
CLEAR SKIN that seems to be improving everyday! My natural oils are coming back to my skin now so it is glowing, and not dull because it was so dry before. NO MORE PF.
ABOUT MY PITYROSPORUM FOLLICULITIS:
I realized PF is a yeast. I had a tiny breakout of it the first week off the accutane, and freaked out. I don;t know why I didn't try this before, but I applied a yogurt mask to my chest and took acidophilous every day. I also washed with nizoral for 2 days. It disappeared! SOO weird I don't know why I never thought of it!!!
ANYWAYS, GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU AND NEVER GIVE UP IT WILL GO AWAY!!!! LOVE YOU ALL AND THE BEST TO ALL OF YOU BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH THIS AWFUL CONDITION! BE STRONG AND FEARLESS!!
