UK Regimen supplies and sunscreen recommendations

46 posts in this topic

I'm stealing this thread from Dami4n. I thought it would be a good idea to have it here, just for reference and all. Anyway... Here it is:

Ok now its coming up to summer im sure a lot of the Ukers that have been plunged in grey clouds for the last few months are now starting to worry a little about what sort of sunscreen they can use for the summer months that has some sort of Sun Factor Protection ?

its not either really its just like a moisturiser.

i personally dont find it greasy so i dont think you wil find it a problem

go into boots an have a look around.

but these are all recommended simply because they dont cause/aggrivate acne.

so i would try and get one of the products listed above as it took ages to find them all. and there are a LOT of moisturisers/sunscreens around.

Has anyone tried Ambre Solaire Sheer Protect SPF30 "very high protection 100% non-greasy cream"?

Any opinions on it?

I'm trying to decipher the ingredients list at the moment - it doesn't say it's non-comedogenic, and I think it may be contributing to my current acne outbreak.

Cleanser: Pears Soap

Treatment: PanOxyl 10

Moisturiser: Eucerin Hydroprotect SPF15

Started Regimen: 28 July 03

Current Status: A few large spots

Notes: Have since lapsed a bit from my original regime, including trying some alternatives to Pears Soap (which I really like and has given me no trouble, but I think may be tested on animals), and different moisturisers. Currently looking for a sun cream (would prefer gel) that is SPF 30, doesn't block my pores, doesn't feel at all greasy, and doesn't make my eyes stream - is that too much to ask?!

I went into Boots, Lloyds Pharmacy, Savers, Asda and Sainsbury's which are all toiletry shops aswell as two supermarkets... and I couldn't find a simple sun lotion anywhere! AHHH... they were rather small shops though... so where can I buy? Should I try a bigger boots?

Try either a bigger boots store, or superdrug. I can never find (or should I more appropriately say, rarely find), decent sunscreens from supermarkets.

was going through the main acne.org site and thought id help out a bit by providing some links for products for the section "outside the US"

mainly for europeans

also this site that ive used to display the products is a MAIN supplier in the UK and europe

www.boots.com

there is a boots in most towns and every city ive ever been to so its a solid supplier.

Cleansers:

Act Washbar - Quite Drying and Acne Medicated but a good washbar for areas you feel acne isnt bad enough to need constant application of bp. I use the act washbar on my cheeks/forehead/neck and its excellent and a real bargain at £1.79 + p&p price depending on where in europe.

http://www.boots.com/shop/product_details....oductid=1032669

Biore Oil Control Cleanser - A cleanser not washbar, i used this anywhere i applied bp to as its very mild and gentle, perfect to prep area before application of bp and doesnt leave area dry etc.

http://www.boots.com/shop/product_details....38&slmRefer=000

Boots Tea Tree + Witch Hazel Foaming Face Wash - Another cleanser ive tried, i stil have it altho i dont use now my flatmate does. As i liked the Biore Cleanser Better.

ph balanced, non comedogenic etc.

http://www.boots.com/shop/product_details....22&slmRefer=000

Benzoyl Peroxide Products:

note:site used for shipping is my only other online pharmacy i use (boots dont seem to sell BP products online but these do: www.expresschemist.com

they also deliver to europe etc.

Panoxyl Aquagel 2.5 40g - The only 2.5% Bp i know of available in the Uk which is OTC. Some member use but like we all know its known to cause redness, none the less available at most pharmacys etc.

http://www.expresschemist.co.uk/product_26...el-2-5-40g.html

Brevoxyl Cream 40g - I thought id add this as it was the one i started off with, its a cream bp at 4% not 2.5, however it did its job at the start. I came off once i realised i could get the CSR gel at a good price to the uk and my skin was a lot better once i changed. I do however have sensitive skin so that might have been the problem.

http://www.expresschemist.co.uk/product_26...-cream-40g.html

Moisturisers:

Eucerin Dry Skin Relief Face Cream with 5% Urea - The only moisturiser id suggest in the UK, id say 95% of UK members use this moisturiser, its EXCELLENT. I used a crappy moisturiser before this one and it was leaving my skin flakey etc. Once i switched it was AMAZING how much difference a quality moisturiser made.

My skin was hardly flakey etc and was 10x better. The only moisturiser i ever suggest to UK members. It is however an AHA moisturiser so id only suggest after a few weeks into the regimen etc etc etc.

hope thats it might be helpful as reference or something. :)

I was at the airport and got some simple face protector spf 20 for £3.65 (it was reduced from £7 something). So far, I'm loving it :)

I'm from the UK and am having problems finding supplies listed on Dan's website. I have already ordered the panoxyl 2.5% BP, but regarding the other products are the effective in use for the clear skin regimen?

What do you mean ordered it? It's available in most pharmacies in the UK. Costs less than £3 but it's very irritating. You would be far better getting Oxy On The Spot which is also available in most pharmacies but a little bit more expensive, much less irritating though. Everything you need for the regimen is available in Superdrug or Boots, just different brand names.

Heyo there! Just feeling a bit confused...I get the impression that uk-ers are using eucerin moisturiser because it contains lactic acid but I can only find one with urea which (if i can remember a-level chemistry) is different...sorry if I'm being dumb but I'm terrified to put anything new on my face as absolutely everything I try seems to make it worse so I want to make sure I choose the right products first time else it will take weeks to undo any damage :(

Make sure the one you use is photostable... that is sunlight does not degrade the product. ALL of the suncreens in the Simple range are not photostable, and there is evidence to show that these (none photostable sunscreens) can have a detrimental effect on the skin.

If your ss has avobenzone (butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane) AND octinoxate (ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate /OMC)... then unless it also has tinosorb S - it is not photostable. OMC increases the photo-instability of avobenzone, and only tinosorb S can stabilise a formulation with the two of these.

In short it means most 'day creams' with spf are not photostable, and quite a few proper sunscreens are also not photostable.

Some brands which make photostable ss's or day creams are;

Boots Soltan

Garnier

Nivea

L'oreal

Olay

I should point out that suncreens which use physical filters exclusively are alway photostable.

When you take this into account it can become much harder to find the perfect ss for your skintype... im still looking. The best for acne prone skin ive found is La Roche Posay hydraphase XL spf15 ppd 12 (its a french brand not avail in the UK).

You also need to appy 1.25ml (1/4tsp) to the face alone to get the rated spf of a sunscreen - apply less and you drastically cut the protection.
