IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO JOIN THIS PLEDGE!!!

I am so happy to see so many people respond! If you want to see proof that this works, look at Tennesseegrl's gallery...you will be blown away!

Queen, I almost fell on the floor laughing my ass off reading your post. I swear we could all totally relate to that in someway. The website you suggested is WONDERFUL...it is the reason I started this topic. I was shocked at just how familiar those stories on there were. That's why I started our own little "no picking" challenge. I meant to mention the site as well but I forgot the actual web address...thank you so much for posting it for us!

What FINALLY hit me after all these years (almost 20 for me...frightening) is that it is not a rational action to rip a scab off your face when it's healing. Popping a whitehead makes a little more sense because eiither it hurts, or is ugly, or you feel like getting the "bad stuff" out. But "looking" for things to squeeze and ripping off scabs is truely self-injuring yourself. It is an illness.

I'm trying to think of some kind example that will make sense to us. Okay, here's a good one. Let's say you are building a house. A brand new house that you want to be beautiful...your dream home. You want everyone to think it's pretty and you want to feel good about it. You have hired a constuction crew to build this house and they are hard at work, hammering and building. Everyday, you drive to the site to check on progress, and it bugs you that the glass in the windows still have the stickers on them from the manufacturer, so you shatter the glass with a rock. The mortar between the bricks is still drying from the day before and you really wanted it to be totally dry, so you take a hammer and a screwdriver and shatter some of the bricks and stab at the damp motar. The Landscaping crew has planted some nice trees and bushes, but because they are still small and not yet established, you decide to rip all the branches off and pluck off the leaves.

Okay...am I making a good point here? YOU WOULD NEVER DO THIS TO YOUR HOUSE!! Why are we ruining our faces on a normal daily basis? WHY?

I think it a real illness that is not rational and not productive in anyway. I have a terrible habit when I am driving my kids to school I feel all over my skin for scabs or dry flakes or bumps. I litterally tear them off and try to make my face smooth again. For a very small amount of time, it does feel smoother, because all the healing has been stripped away to reveal red, oozing wounds. But they ALWAYS come back. Always. So why do we do it?

Okay, I am done spouting off. I hope my above comparison made sense to everyone. I really hope I can draw attention to the rediculous nature of our problem so we can truly train ourselves to let our dream house be BUILT! Accutane will hopefully help make the acne stop appearing, so let's use this time to learn how to allow our faces to heal. This is a habit that is so much a part of our lives...it will be tough. I can't even believe how much better my face has been since I consiously paid attention to allowing my face to heal. I haven't been perfect, but the effort is there and the results are AMAZING. I will take a picture tonight and show you.

Good luck everyone and remember, scratching an itch is totally okay. And don't give up on it if you break down for a few minutes. Like Tennessee girl said, it's a wonderful cycle and SO gratifying to see the change...you will gain motivation quickly when you start feeling good about yourself again.

WELCOME and I am so proud of all of you guys!!

Oh, this is a great idea. I'm in! Perfect timing, too, 'cause I can feel a pimple coming on -- the kind that will just fade away without being noticeable if I don't pick at it, but that will develop into a face-eating monster if I touch it. Thanks for the added motivation!

Well, I've made it through nearly 36 hours without picking, but tonight could be tough ... there's some tempting material to work on. So I'm reading through this thread before I start my nightly routine, just to keep me on track.

Glad you liked my little tale of shame ... that's the first time I've ever told it in its entirety. Normally I edit out the facepicking part. (So there I was, perched on the sink, brushing my teeth ... uh-huh.)

Okay guys...are you ready for some before and after shots? The first shot is before, and next to it is after 48 hours of trying my very best not to touch my face. I wasn't perfect, but the pictures speak volumes!

Before [attachmentid=3482] After 48 hours [attachmentid=3490]
My face has been clearing pretty well the last few days on Amnesteem, but the red marks were ones I refused to let heal. Now with my no touching rule...they really are healing. Notice hour much calmer my face looks. Yippee!

Wow, HUGE difference. Just think what another 48 hours will do for you!

I went thru my whole routine tonight without any deliberate picking ... but I spaced for a moment when I was looking in the mirror with tweezers in hand. Before I knew it, I had beheaded a little pustule. It was ready to blow its top anyway, so no biggie ... but old habits die hard!!!!

Hey girl!!

Ya know what, I don't think that a whitehead big mama zit should count. I once had a derm tell me that it was better to get the junk out of obvious "ready" zits so it can heal. So don't beat yourself up! I would have done the same thing!

By the way, one of my really bad stories? I answered to door to a neighbor bringing me a "welcome" gift. After talking to her for like 20 minutes, I went back in the bathroom and realized I had been bleeding on my cheek from a zit I had just mangled. It was all clot-like and gross, with a big drippy gross line down my cheek. I literally burst into tears!! What a loser I am!!

Hang in there...and don't give up just because of one big mama. lol.gif

Hey, I can work with that line of reasoning. It didn't count. I am still pure. I have regained my no-picking virginity.

Thanks for sharing your own personal picking bloodbath, sistah -- and now, ladies, are there any more good stories out there?

C'mon, give ...

ok ive been trying this and its not going well, i just keep picking, you know the ones that form a scab as you explain, well i just cant stop picking them off and then they are there for like a month as i pick them off everyday.
if you leave them alone in a scab how long do they take to fall off???
i just cant stand them, i dont know what stands out more a scabby spot or a red mark it leaves after you tear it off, aaarrrgggggg

ok picking challange begins now. 12.10 on 10th feb. lets see you i go.

by the way i got to squeeze whitheads, they heal faster then anyway if you dont pick them

chickenpox, that story with the house is a really good way to look at it. it made me laugh to think that is really what we are doing to our faces.

Yeah, I am gonna have to re-start as well. I only went 5 hours without picking. I remember thinking to myself, do not pick. The next thing I know, I'm squeezing like crazy!

OK, I'm signing up for my next 48 hours. I am so happy -- not a single bright glaring red mark on my whole face, and the little bumps and zits that have popped up are all starting to dry up and go away. All by themselves. Without ANY help from my little helping hands. smile.gif

ChickenPox, I am in your debt. Thanks for the inspiration.

Guess what.
I slipped. I had a MAJOR session this morning That was HORRIBLE. All my preaching and I messed up big time.

I am so sorry for not practicing what I was preaching. Trouble is, I know it's bad...I just couldn't stop.

Time to start over. I am NOT giving up.

Atta girl, that's the spirit. Nobody said it was going to be easy. You are working against a really deeply ingrained habit, or disorder, or disease, or whatever it is that makes us shred ourselves. Just keep picking yourself up. (so to speak)

Now, I'm curious ... what is it that you pick? Scabs? Zits? Clogged pores? All of the above?

If it's mainly scabs, you should take a look at synthetic brush exfoliation. It's AMAZING for scabs ... kinda wears them away gently, without stripping them down so far that they bleed. When I get scabs now, they are mostly just thin flakes. PM me if you have questions.

Today is a new day, starting NOW!

I think the words you use (e.g. disorder) are probably fairly accurate. It's one thing to squeeze the occasional whitehead which has risen to the surface and is just one big, glaring blob clearly ready to be released. But the descriptions in this thread, of an almost compulsive scratching of the face, seem quite a bit more serious than that. Esp. for whoever it was that said they were driving at the time! surprised.gif

You need to find a way of associating scratching/picking with discomfort! Kinda like that solution you put on your fingernails as a kid to stop biting 'em smile.gif
