To much Zinc?

12 posts in this topic

I am currently taking a multivitamin twice a day as instructed on back that contains 10mg Zinc and 1mg Copper.

I have also been taking a Zinc/Copper tablet with 15mg Zinc and 0.75mg Copper. I have run out of these and all I can find now is a 50mg Zinc and 2mg Copper combo tablet.

Is taking 70mg a day of Zinc unhealthy and bad for my system. How much copper would I have to take to counter-balance the Zinc?

So currently I will be taking 70mg Zinc and 3.5mg copper. This ok?

Thx.

I don't know, maybe for a short while but that is quite a high dose to be on for too long. Zinc can become toxic at greater than 70mg.

I agree with Ben and HUMMM. I see no rationale whatsoever for taking 70 mg of zinc every day.

250mg? Are you sure? Do you mean 25mg? If I were you i'd really stop taking that much before you do (if you haven't already) yourself some damage.

Wow 250mg is a lot or do you mean total tablet weight. Some forms of Zinc it is perfectly alright to take that amount and others it is bad. All comes down to the elemental Zinc which is the actual Zinc in the tablet rather than the tablet weight. Something like Zinc Picolinate is mostly all elemental Zinc where as something like OptiZinc tends to be well padded out and it is often necerssary with certain versions to take large amounts to get a small amount of elemental Zinc.

I would recommend you check the ingredients to see how much actual Zinc the tablets contain. I wouldn't take more than about 50mg of elemental Zinc a day long term.

I took 10 pils of 50mg 'gluco' Zinc every day for a mounth. nothing wrong happened.

now I'm down to 4 pills of 50mg Zinc 2 pills multi mineral and 1 vitamin C.

it has cured my cystic acne but not my oily skin... washing with cold water has cured that for me.

peeple are trying to scare you or someting. above 2000mg is toxic. some peeple say they get stomac cramps above 100mg I never had that problem.

I personally think you are crazy Yakushi. You only get one body and for me personally it is the most valuable thing I own. There is no way I would ever take that much Zinc, especially just to control acne.

Above 100mg of elemental (actual Zinc not tablet weight) is where an average person starts to have problems where Zinc interferes with the immune system. It can also cause a copper imbalance and later on problems such as anaemia and so on. The more you take the worse it becomes. If you want to take that much then please feel free, it is your body but it certainly isn't advisable for you or anyone else to copy you.

Just so you are aware the Recommended Daily Amount to have a healthy body and prevent deficiency is 15mg so basically you were taking over 33 times the RDA.
