Oh my gosh, if I broke out after a course of Accutane I'd be down... :( I've just started this week and love following you guys and your tips. No side effects as of yet but I may be popping back to ask about supplements if I lose my mind with the initial breakout :)

How is the 60 mg? Are you experiencing any side effects? I'm 5'7 and 120 lbs now and I haven't gone above 40 mg. I've been on 30 mg's for the past couple of months.

And really?! I wonder why...... I THINK that Accutane just helps people no matter what. Like, even if your acne comes back, it comes back more mild. Or like you said, other treatments actually help now? I know for a lot of people their acne comes back a little bit right after they get off of it, but then completely disappears after that one breakout which we can call the "getting off of Accutane breakout". When they start breaking out, they use something to combat the problem and when their breakout clears, as it was supposed to, they think that this product was what cleared them up even when Accutane couldn't; when in reality, it was just the body's adjustment response. The Accutane continues to work in your body, and supress your acne.

AM I EVEN MAKING ANY SENSE RIGHT NOW? I don't know. These are just my observations.

And I agree smile.pngsmile.pngsmile.pngsmile.pngsmile.png Let's hope everything is just crystal clear from here on out! I will continue to work on my skin but I'm hoping days with acne are behind me.

xo

I haven't experienced anything different with 60mg than what I had on 30mg -

Dry lips - manageable with Aquaphor

Dry, sometimes peeling skin - manageable with Cerave Moisturizing Cream (I did have to add in a little Aquaphor to my moisturizer a couple of times which terrified me because before Accutane I would never have dreamed of putting something at thick and sticky and greasy feeling as Aquaphor on my face, but it was just what I needed)

Red, dry patches on tops of hands and a little on my upper arms - manageable with Cerave Moisturizing Cream and Aquaphor

Occasional dry/red eyes - manageable with liquid tear drops

I drink tons of water and green tea throughout the day, exercise, do yoga and eat healthy. I'm not sure if this has contributed to my lack of bad side effects, but just in case I'll keep doing it :)

I didn't know there was a "getting off Accutane" breakout, blah!! I'm still hoping this month will be the magical month where everything goes away, but I'm still getting them. Less, though...so that's something.

All we can do is keep on keepin' on, right?!

I wish you all the best on your course! We're all supporting you. And about the supplements, to be honest, I used to take a bunch of things when I first started but then I found that all the supplements + medication was too much and it was sort of hurting my stomach and it was making it hard for my liver to process everything. I suggest just taking some flaxseed oil. I take it everyday (if I'm at home) right after my medication, and it helps add some fat to the meal I just ate too.

Yes!!! I'm trying to stay positive. I've been getting really sad lately. Like for no reason, I'm just sad. Then I'm happy, but then I'm really sad again. I've been getting emotional about everything. Just like an emotional rollercoaster. I'm done Accutane in 3 days! So my brain can finally start to recover from the medication. I'VE BEEN ON THIS DAMN THING FOR NINE WHOLE MONTHS.

Thanks! The 'lips' have kicked off already so I'm just using 100% argan oil to soothe them and my crackly hair. I guess some people suffer more than others with their stomach. I can't wait to hear of your post-Accutane progress, that must be a mixture of anxiety & relief.

You're a trooper, that's for sure! Nine months is a long time to be on this treatment.

It's interesting you bring up the "emotional rollercoaster". I've been experiencing anxiety a lot more lately and I kind of feel like I have been randomly emotional at times. It's not enough to make me concerned, but I do have a feeling it's the Accutane. I did start worrying that I would be anxious and emotional forever the other day, but I'm sure you're right. Our brains will balance out after the medicine starts getting out of our systems. Ahhh, 3 day countdown!! How exciting :)

Hey all!

Wondering if anyone else has heard anything about your hair and face going back to being oily 6 months after treatment has ended? One of the perks over the last few months has been that my face isn't a greasy, shiny mess, and same with my hair! My Derm says that my hair will return to it's previous greasy style after treatment, but that I might get 6 more months of this normal hair that I'm so much more in love with.

Just curious...

One of the best feelings in the world is: not having to take pills everyday! :)

I have been off Accutane for I guess about 3 weeks now. I love being able to eat whatever I want! I'm now eating a vegan diet. This is what works for me, and I feel that it's necessary for me personally to eat this way to keep the acne away, since I cannot rely on Accutane anymore. Vegan is also what makes me feel happiest and healthiest, physically and emotionally.

I haven't posted any pictures yet, because my skin is still pretty red from all of the hyperpigmentation and scarring, and in pictures it sort of looks like acne and I don't want that to give a false view and for my end result to discourage anyone. I will say however, that my skin has continued to get better after coming off the medication. BUT, do you guys remember me telling you about a cyst that I got on my cheek like 2 MONTHS ago? Well.... It's still there. I DON'T KNOW HOW OR WHY. My dermatologist even injected it like about a month ago, but it's like it just wants to live on my face. That cyst did come up when I was still on Accutane, so whatever. Besides that little beast, the rest of my skin is completely clear and smooth. Including my chest and back.

Having done a long-term, low-dose course, I will say that I now feel that most people get a better result on a shorter-term, higher-dose course. This could however be at the expense of experiencing more serious side effects. So you have to do what feels right for you.

As far as side effects go, the only thing I'm experiencing is dry skin. That's all. :)

I hope that everyone's Accutane journey is going well!

I'm assuming the oil probably will come back, but I don't think at the level that it was before. Don't think so far ahead into the future. Focus on today, enjoy what you have, and stay happy, healthy and positive. :)

I can now tell what products break me out. Weirdest thing. Before I had so much acne that there was no way I could tell what was an old breakout and what was new. Now, I can tell exactly what products don't react well with my skin. The Ole Henrikson Truth Serum and coconut oil both break me out! The coconut oil one was an interesting experiment because I had never used it as a moisturizer on my face before and I've always heard mixed reviews on it.. With some people saying it did amazing things for their skin, and some people saying it gave them the worst breakout possible. I had never planned on using coconut oil on my face because my skin is so sensitive that I figured I'd be in the "it broke me out" group. However, the only thing I had on me one night was coconut oil (note: it was like the highest quality coconut oil ever, and it still broke me out) and I just put a little bit under my eyes and around my mouth after washing my face. And the next morning, I had broken out in tiny pimples UNDER MY EYES and around my mouth. (UNDER THE EYES THOUGH?) My skin did not react well to it at all! It was no doubt the coconut oil!

Same thing with the Truth Serum. I used it on my whole face one night, and had a few tiny pimples on my face the next morning. Thinking it was just normal, I used it again the next night and the next morning I had a BUNCH of tiny little pimples.

Everything is good now. :) As soon as I stopped using both of these products, everything went back to normal! It's so cool being able to tell what breaks me out!

After seen all these accutane stories I would love to share my experience/tips with accutane. I now em 25 yr, when I was 19 I tried accutane for the first time, but I didn't take it as serious as it really is considering I was drinking a lot of alcohol, eating really bad I was just putting my body under and immense pressure. My stats then where 19yr , 194ibs , 5"9. My first lab work on triglycerides came in at 105 I keep doing the bad habits on eating and drinking so on month 2 my levels where at 280. Yes sky rocket even thought they won't take u off accutane until you are hitting close to 500 , but still doctor thought i wasn't the best candidate.

So now that I am 25 yr old (180ibs, 5"9) decide to give accutane another try I've been on accutane for 4months and I'm slowly getting to see better results from having acne since my teens I've deslt with acne so I won't be happily satisfied until I have NO ACNE :). But I would like to input a lot on the supplements and foods to eat while on accutane , my first test on triglycerides was 103 after month two it was 144 after month three it was 260. So I got really upset because the last thing I wanna do is get taking off accutane because that's my only hope to clear my acne. So now that I've changed my diet and supplements intake my triglycerides levels are be -on perfect they currently sit at 57! Yes from 260 to 57 in just a month of eating extremely well.

Accutane - I am currently on 100mg a day, 20mg pills so I split them thru the day with good fats and supplements.

Supplements-
-Fish oil 4mg a day, I usually split these thru out the day and take 1mg with each meal

-Papaya enzymes/ Labels says chew 4 a day, I take 2 with meal 1 and another 2 with meal 3.

-Vitamin E/ I take 2 capsules separately one = (400iu) for a total of (800iu) a day usually take them with meal 1 and meal 3

-Priobotics/ 1 chew a day

-Ab cuts "CLA belly fat" you can only finds these at Costco/ I usually just take 2 capsules even though the container says 4 ,just because i already Take vitamin E and too much vitamin E is not neccesarly a good thing :). I take these with a small meal!

Another good tip is trying to take your accutane with good fats other then the supplements for example I try to stick to avocados, almonds, bacon, steak, nuts, even eggs. And also remember to keep a clean diet thru your accutane journey.

And I know this information is not for everyone or nor am I a professional nutritionist I am just speaking of personal experience even my doctor is extremely surprised as to how low I've gotten my triglycerides. So for those of you who deal with high triglycerides give this a try :)

Oh and remember to take some sort of colon cleanser/ Metamucil to flush out all the things you'll be taking. Yes I know this seems like a lot of things to take but honestly eating right and sleeping right and drinking ALOT OF WATER you'll be fine! :)

I would suggest staying away from bacon. Pork contains parasites and bacteria that do not die off no matter how much it's cooked.

Happy to say that my skin is still clear. :) So happy! I have also been a vegan since coming off of the medication, and I think that attributes to it as well.

Hey there,
I used to come on here before I got too frustrated with my acne, but now I'm back as things have improved.
We used to support each other lol
At any rate, I just got off Accutane and I have also been vegan and so far no breakouts.
Glad to see you're doing OK, hopefully we won't have to get on a second course lol

I highly recommend Accutane! The only side effect it really had on me was the dryness, but it was bearable. 6 months of dryness is worth a life of clear skin. Look at my album on my page if you want to see how well it works!

So happy to hear that! You're saving lives everyday! :) I really think that what I eat is the biggest factor in my breakouts, I love knowing that since I'm a vegan I will never have to worry about a second course of Accutane. :)

Hello! I just started Accutane (20 mg once a day) 5 days ago, and I was wondering if the birth control will prevent the dreaded initial breakout? My acne cleared about 80% immediately when I started the required birth control a month ago and was light to moderate before that. I decided to go on accutane to finally cure it all together and get off all medication. However, I'm still worried about that IB! Any advice? thank you and I hope your treatment is continuing to go smoothly!

Yes birth control WILL help if you've been on it for a while before starting Accutane. If you start both of them at the same time, they will both give you an initial breakout causing your Accutane initial breakout to appear worse than it is. I definitely recommend JUST taking the Accutane. Take it, get it over with, have clear skin forever. Birth control is really unhealthy to take (any medication is), and a lot more long-term than Accutane. Plus in my experience, I've found that whenever I got off of birth control, my acne came back worse because it messed up my hormones. I will neveeeeeer ever take birth control or any other medications ever again in my life, unless it's a life or death situation. :) Hope this helps.

EDIT: SORRY I definitely didn't read your message properly before typing that message. But I will leave it up anyways. I salute you for planning on getting off of all medication. I also highly recommend a vegan diet for anyone wanting to never ever take medication of any sort again.   :)

thanks so much for the reply! Believe me, I fought with my derm over the birth control....I can't stand the side effects and its not necessary for its intended purpose at this time in my life. But he said he wouldn't prescribe the accutane unless I went on the pill.... UGH.

Anyway, I'm on day 6 now and I'm getting a moderate IB...any idea how long the breakout lasts? I have college in a month and a half and I'd like to have somewhat improved skin when I start as a freshman!

Thank you so much for your log and your advice it really helped me!!

So sorry I didn't reply to this sooner! I never really come on here anymore as you can tell. If your dermatologist is insisting you take birth control you could always just get your prescription filled but not actually take the medication. He'll never know. Or change dermatologists all together if that is an option! If you don't want to take it, I don't see why you have to.. Just make sure there is no chance of you getting pregnant, of course! My dermatologist allowed me to declare abstinence! Which should be an available option for you as well.

The initial breakout for me lasted 1-2 weeks. Not bad at all. I still continued to breakout after that period, but my skin got increasingly better and better as time went on. At that time my skin wasn't really dry yet, so I would use clay masks and use my Differin gel on the odd night to help with my breakouts, and I would suggest you do the same. :) NOT if your skin is already dry though! I had REALLY oily skin and I was on a low dose for the entire duration of my treatment so my skin took a while to get dry.

Other than that, it's been about 3 months since I have taken my last pill and my skin is still clear. :) I still have some hyperpigmentation and scarring but they're fading.

I'm glad I could be of help!! I hope you're doing well with your treatment and everything else, and remember clear skin is at the end of the road! And of course if you have any other questions, I'd be more than happy to answer them! <3

Cheers!

XO
