Day 46

So today I'm down to 3, which isn't too bad. Read to take my.. 46th dose very shortly. It seems as if the time has flown since I first started my medication! You honestly don't think about it all that much, so the time just goes by. This morning I did have quite peeley (yes, yes, that's not a word) skin, I guess from the dryness, but no soreness or anything. Lips are still dry but nothing bad. My ulcer however, seems to be going! As it was very sore the last few days and it was right at the end of my tongue. It was particularly large too, but a healthy dose of Anbesol regularly has seemed to help.

I can't remember if i mentioned, but I have seemed to be gaining a lot of cuts on my hand, due to the thinning of my skin(?), which is a pain! As it makes my hands look a mess! I think i'm down to 4 cuts now, but still, not a great thing to have!

My 20th birthday is in 11 days, so I'm hoping that I'm not particularly spotty then! As I occasionally have flare up's on Accutane. Pray for me guys! :)

Day 49

I thought I better write as today - officially - my upped dose, initial break out has occurred. I have multiple lumps (which seem to be cyst-like), which I've counted as 4. Not great. As I've said previously, I'm not really used to getting. This sucks!

Anyway, just got to hang in there. Luckily, the Easter holidays have begun and I don't have to leave the house much, as I think I'll end up being pretty self conscious. Wish me luck!

Day 53

I've begun to notice my skin is getting even drier and the dreaded cracked lips seems to be happening. I've been continuously using lip balm (carmex and blistex) but they don't seem to be working so much.... Which isn't great. The cysts I have are still there, though they do seem to be shrinking and the pain is now gone. I haven't had any other pimples since these cysts came up however, which is pretty good, though, I'm not holding my breath!

If anyone has any tips for shrinking cysts, it'd be much appreciated! Going out for my 20th on Sunday and I'm praying for the best!

Day 57

So my skin is at the worst its been in a long time. I seem to have reached the point where my body is just pushing every little bump and lump out, then they're becoming inflamed pimples/cysts. Great. Not the best new but something I will deal with. Just hoping this flare up hurries up and goes away!!! I'm just using lots of sudocrem to help heal them and maybe some ice if they get too big.

Day 59

My mouth is incredibly sore today.. Yet again a side effect I believe. The top of my mouth hurts and I seem to have something that appear to be inflamed taste buds on the end of my tongue. Which I've been dealing with for maybe 2 week now? It stings like a... yeah. Skin is not doing too bad... Seems to be getting a little bit better. Not too many new pimples at the moment which is good. The lump I had on my nose is now shrinking, however I have a small one on my right cheek that seems to be sitting there.

I have noticed slight mood changes recently. I was watching, get this, Harry Potter and I felt a rush of emotions at a non-emotional part of the film. Like I was going to burst out crying! The same happened during an episode of Britains Got Talent! It was kinda funny afterwards though... But it does show that it does effect our moods.

I'm kinda at the point where I'm waiting for some real results, though I mainly read that they come during the third month, and I'm almost about to enter it.... If any past Accutane users can tell me when they started to see real results, that'd be great! Thanks.

May i ask if your acne is genetic related ?.. Because if it is mild, and you know that i will go away (you know by watching your parents and related) why are you using such a powerful drug?. I do have acne,a little bit more than mild, and my father offered me to pay for acuttane, but he told me that he had it till his 19/20 (my brother also did). So it doesn't have sense probably harming your body for something it will go away by it's own.

Anyways if your acne have passed the genetic "barrier" (i mean, lets suppose your mum had it till her 18 but are still getting it),i wish you the best of lucks.

Hey! I'm glad you made this log!  I also am in the same boat, I have had acne since I was 12, and now I'm 23. It's mild, but nothing has worked. I am on day 15 of Accutane except my doctor started me on 60mg. My derm did tell me that patients who start on low dosages usually see results around the end of their treatment.

Hi Mahninja,

I'm not a hundred percent sure, though personally I believe it is genetic. I've suffered with different degrees of Acne since I was 17, I am now 20. It moderate at the age of 17-18, then had clear skin through the use of Lymecycline, then after a year and half of use, it failed and I broke out in multiple cysts along my chin. When I got to this point, I managed  to get to see the dermatologist, maybe 5 month after it begun to worsen and decided to start Accutane.

My mother is now 46 and still gets very mild acne, which I am hoping doing this will avoid me having to face at her age. The fact I begun it was due to the severity of the individual pimples, as though I do not have a huge quantity, I often get swollen lumps and, more recently cysts. I mark very easily and I think Accutane is my final option.

I think it takes a long time to think, but personally I could no longer wait around for it to go when my skin was being ruined. So think hard and you'll know what to do :)

Hi Shel! I'm glad I can help! Unforuntately, its the persistence of the acne isn't it! That is a very high dose, so you may experience more side effects than those of us who started at a lower dose. How is it going for you so far? :) Good luck!!

Day 64

Yet again my skin is pretty bad.. popped up with quite a few new lumps this week. A few of them cysts, however, very small cysts which is unusual. Since I started accutane, the types of acne I've had has changed dramatically. Originally, I used to just get yellow heads, with cysts very occasionally, however now, I rarely get yellow heads, and mainly just get these lumps... They're seem to become just very tiny cysts now, which I find odd, they're hard lumps that, if they do come to a head, they take a very long time. Blows my mind. They also take dramatically longer to go, which is the worst part.

Oh well, lets keep at it, and hopefully they'll be gone before I know it. However, it's times like these that really test you.... Facing the IB. Stupid flare ups. But on a side note, I've been sleeping pretty badly recently, so I think they may be interlinked.

Day 67

My recent break out has left me with a lot of red marks unfortunately, I believe this is the IB from upping my dose from 20mg to 40mg. Damned IB's! What can you do though? I seem to go through these phases where I don't get any pimples, then one day I'll just get a bunch of lumps appear on my face. It's extremely odd... Dry lips are persisting, however, they seem to be getting drier around the edges rather than on my actual lips.

I'm still at the point where I am sat thinking "when am I going to see results?!" because so far, I don't find that I am seeing any! Or not much, anyway. However, the turning point has to be coming up soon.... Right? So frustrating. I am now in the third month, so hopefully they are coming soon.

I do want to warn people about dry patches on the arms... Because when I first started getting them I was a bit confused as to what they were. Apparently its quite common. They're kind of like patches of eczema on your arms, that are slightly red and crusty? If that's the right word. Just don't scratch them as they seem to be going.

Day 72

So I've gradually been seeing an improvement over the last few days. I have only had 2 pimples over the last week, and each being very small in comparison to some of the ones I usually deal with. I have noticed an increase in dryness and flakiness around my nose, lower forehead and lips (more so around the lips rather than on them). I definitely contributed getting lots of lumps from an increased dose initial break out, though essentially, I am getting quite far into my course now. It won't be that long until I have completed 3 month!

My major side effect through this entire course has been ulcers. Many, many painful ulcers over the time I've been taking them, and mainly on my tongue. I will definitely be mentioning this to my dermatologist at the end of the month.

Day 78

So its almost been a week since my last update. I'm not sure if people actually still read this but I will proceed anyway!

I've begun to notice that the size of my pimples has reduced significantly, I mostly only get smaller ones, at least this week, which is pretty good to say it is exam season and I am pretty stressed! I've been getting these odd dry patches on my face I've noticed, and my nose and forehead is still quite peely. I've been noticing my eyes have begun to get sore, and I wonder if this is related to the medication? However, it may be that hayfever season is coming... I don't have hayfever, though I may be getting it? Who knows. I've also felt a bit more sleepy recently.

Day 84

Over the last few days I've had a couple of compliments regarding my skin! Which is very nice to get, saying that I look clear. I don't currently have any actives, however I have this little dry patch where I previously did which is annoying. But, I'm going to a concert in Manchester Tuesday, and I wanted my skin to look nice! So looks like it may well do!

I am approaching the end of my third month now, which is nice! It doesn't seem like I've been on them that long of a time, but since that bad breakouts from the IB, everything has been getting better! I have a feeling I will be upped at the dermatologist appointment... Which my lead to another IB which is scary. We'll see how it goes. :)

Day 91

Skin hasn't been all that bad recently. Had quite a big pimple pop up on the side of my face that I ended up squeezing, but felt I had to because it was so painful! Feels much better now, though it may leave a mark.... Let's hope it doesn't.

I have officially crossed the three month barrier and attend my dermatologist appointment on Tuesday, so I'm wondering if my dose will be upped or maintained.. Either way, I still feel that I haven't had the full benefits of the drug as of yet. I wonder when it's really going to kick in for me.

Day 93

So I attended my dermatologist appointment and it was a very simple review. I'm going to remain on 40mg for another 8 week then come back for a review.. That will mean I will have been on the medication for 5 month by that point. 5 month seems quite a short course in my eyes... And I am still getting pimples, though not as frequently as before. Does this mean I will see more results in these last few months? Hmmmm.

My first course was pretty easy and i cleared up for about a year. Then i started getting clogged pores on the fore Head. My derm decided to put me on cause she Saïd some people with oily skin require a second course. My skin after round one Was alot better and about half as oily. So im hoping after This course Ill Be good! Best of Luck to You, yeah There arent many people on hère with mild acné on accutane. I tried everything too but accutanes the only thing That really helped.

Hi! I see. I'm glad it cleared up the first time, though I'm sorry it's reoccurred! I could end up being in the same boat as you as I did have very oily skin before hand. Thank you! It's nice to have someone who is in the same boat and understands the annoyance of mild yet persistent acne!

Day 105

So I'm 3 and a half months into my course, still on 40mg and I recently have had a lot of pimples coming up! More than usual. This is very annoying because I would have thought i wouldn't get some many at this stage of my course! I have many 4? Which is a lot more than I've had in a while.. Though i'm hoping it's just my skin pushing the last few out.

Wish my luck because sometimes I get so frustrated!

Day 112

I'm not far from the 4 month point now! My face is pretty good. I have a couple of pimples on my chin which isn't too great at the moment.. I ended up squeezing them, but generally my face isn't bad. I feel like the marks I had on my cheeks are now fading quite a bit also.. No side effects really apart from the dry lips. I had a couple of drinks last night and I seemed to get drunk really fast. Maybe its a loss of tolerance.. who knows.

Day 116

Just wanted to report that I have NO actives at the moment! This is quite an achievement for me, as I always have at least 1. I have a fair few marks left but they'll fade in time. 4 more days until the end of the 3rd month, and the 4 month mark. It seems like I may finally be seeing some results from the medication!
