If it's any consolation, researchers are looking into Vitamin D derivatives and EGCG just for general acne. Looks promising so far.

I used Vitamin B5 for a while though i didn't notice much effect... I may have not used it for long enough.

Day 12 - Progress

So I'm now on day 12 of my course, I haven't had any new side effects, lips aren't particularly chapped, only slight dry and kept under control with Carmex and Burt's Bee's lip balm. I'm unsure whether my face is looking a bit ashy from dry skin.. But I'm only slightly dry on my nose and forehead. Back pain seems to have gone, though I do have a small rash on my chest which I'm unsure whether it is linked to the Accutane or not... Hm. I had a small break out on my chin over the past 2 days, though nothing too severe.

It's been difficult avoiding the alcohol, being a university student, but so far I have only touched it once, which was 2 cocktails, and I didn't feel too great afterwards.. So I've decided I will only drink on special occasions!

In the UK mild to moderate acne which is unresponsive to other treatments such as topicals and oral antibiotics is being treated with isotretinoin (accutane) much more frequently now.

My daughter is 25, she had mild acne since the age of 15 - sometimes it would clear and then it would flare up again.  She mainly had spots on her face with blackheads.

Eventually, after trying every treatment prescribable from her GP as well as us spending a fortune on chemical peels, blue light treatment, microdermabrasion and expensive creams/cosmetics I paid for her to see a Dermatologist who suggest roaccutane.

She's in her 3rd month and was given 60mg daily, quite high for an 8 stone girl.  Her skin is now perfect - no spots, no blackheads and the texture of it is somehow finer.

At first her acne got quite a lot worse but this is just due to the sebaceous glands shrinking which squeezes the contents - it is actually a sign the accutane is starting to work.

The main side effect is very dry cracked lips but this is manageable with salves.  The only other real side effect she has noticed is that she gets a bad hangover if she drinks much alcohol.  Apart from that she is fine.

It has really transformed her life - she was quite down and low self esteem before and now she can go out with no make up and feels more confident.

She is worried her acne will return when she stops the treatment but her dermatologist reassured her that he will put her on a low maintenance dose if this happens.

So I just wanted to reassure people that accutane does work, it does have side effects but in our experience nothing too bad and it can be transforming!

Good Luck everyone.

Day 13 - Progress

Thought I'd better update again as I have had some new events today. I believe I've begun to have my initial breakout, which while not severe, it has gave me a lot more active acne than usual. I've decided to use a low strength BP to combat these. Has anyone got any advice on BP while on accutane?

I also had 3 nose bleeds this morning, 2 not so bad ones while getting ready for work, then 1 quite bad one later on, which was mid-work, so was kinda embarrassing, but something I have to deal with. Hope I don't get too many more of these!

Hey there,

Good luck with starting your accutane journey :)

Progression pictures are nice to see and spice up the thread from normal posts, if you're comfortable posting them of course!

You mentioned drinking two posts up and when I did my course two years ago I promised myself to quit drinking all together for the time. Afterwards, I didn't even crave to drink that much and it was definitely a big plus; saving the money, hangovers and the possible complications!

Thank you!

It's the lack of courage when posting pictures! As I said previously, I don't suffer from lots of active acne, but I do have a lot of marks from the past few months that I still have to deal with! Boo!

Day 17 - Progress

So Day 17. Pretty sure I've had my initial breakout now. I had quite a large cyst on my cheek (about the size of a penny) which developed over the weekend, (cysts are extremely rare for me) though it seems to be shrinking now. The pain has gone due to lots of Sudocrem/Neosporin, though it is now quite dry. I've been struggling to sleep the whole night through for this past week, constant tossing and turning, which is taking a toll.. Got a feeling it could be Accutane related?

My blackheads have began sticking out a lot more but I believe this means they'll start falling out soon, as I've noticed a few of the ones on my upper cheek have now gone. I am not as dry as I thought I'd be by now, but my chin seems to be the driest area.

Day 19 - Progress

So today is the first day I've had significant peeling on my lips. They're not particularly dry but a layer of skin(?) seems to be peeling off. I'm continuing to get new acne. :( However, the cyst on my cheek has almost gone completely, which is a relief.. Just got to persevere I guess until I start to see some results!

Day 22! Progress

So day 22. I've started to get quite dry on my face.. with some peeling on my top lip and chin. Also on the tip of my nose.... Odd. Got a couple of pimples at the minute, but nothing major. I definitely think the tablets are affecting my sleep to a degree as I often wake up several times in the night now when I never used to. Apart from that... Nothing noticeably different, though I am waiting for the day that I don't have pimples. Fingers crossed!

PS. My new best friends are moisturiser and a couple of lip balms.

Day 26

I haven't been posting as frequently due to lack of changes, but I thought I'd better do an update. So, my face is getting very dry, even with the frequent use of moisturiser, still on the top lip and chin mainly, but have noticed it on my forehead and cheeks now also... Pimples are still coming here and there, which I question whether I should still be getting new ones(?) However, they are less frequent, and less numerous than before.. I think. I also have tried to start drinking more water, as I notice I get thirsty far more easily than I used to do.

I also think I'm starting to look a little bit red, unfortunately, but I will cope I'm sure. I did on the other hand get a compliment on my face yesterday, saying my skin looked great, which made me feel quite happy. Personally, I hadn't thought there'd been that much change! So maybe this helps reinforce the fact that sometimes we think our skin is worse than it actually is, because we're so used to acne.

Just to note. I went on a night out for the first time on the medication and drank far too much... Head over the toilet drunk. Which I know not to do, but I thought for a one off, go for it (it's so hard being a uni student and not drinking!!!) However, despite the amount of alcohol I drank, I haven't been all that ill today, which I was not expecting due to the effects Accutane has on your liver. Finally... Month 1 is nearly at its end!

Day 28

Well, I thought I better update again as my skin seems to be getting a little worse... Which I found very strange at this point in my course? As normally people's skin seems to be getting better by this point? Is this me being ignorant or is this a possible thing?

The only thing that I can think of is that the alcohol that I subjected myself to on Thursday has had an effect on my skin. So, looks like no more alcohol AT ALL because I don't want my skin to get worse at such a point! Continuing dry skin as always.

Day 30

So more or less a month from first beginning treatment and my skin is not great! I've had a bit of a breakout, more so than what I thought I had when I thought I was going through the "initial breakout". Does anyone know if this is normal at this late stage? How annoying.

Blackheads have started falling out which is a plus.

Day 34

So recently I began to notice my face has started to get oilier, though only very very slightly.. But this isn't a good sign. I am back to see my dermatologist on Tuesday, so will mention this to him. I am wondering whether a higher dose will be beneficial, though he may have planned to do this in the first place. I'm still getting pimples, usually one a day, which is still not great as this is exactly the same as pre-Accutane... I was hoping to expect at least a small difference by now. Maybe this is the time that I should just brace myself and be patient, as being on a low dose of 20mg with a weight of 60kg, I know staying on this dose, it will take a long time for things to get better...

I will see what the dermatologist has to say and let you all know!

Hey, I've been following along your log! I also have mild, persistent acne and now on 3rd week of accutane. I haven't really seen much improvement either! I still get 1 or 2 pimples a day, which is consistent with pre-accutane. Good luck and will continue to follow along!

Hey its great to hear from you! I'm glad I can give you some information. I hope that you see results too :) Good luck!

Day 37

Today I went back to the dermatologist for my month (kinda) check up. They asked me a few questions about my acne, side effects, mood etc, then upped my dose from 20mg to 40mg. She warned me that due to this rise, I may have another IB or a flare up at some point, but I am willing to accept that and wait it out. Today I have taken my first 40mg dose.

My skin is pretty good at the moment with only one active pimple, which only has a small head so I have avoided squeezing it, hoping it will go away on its own. I'm also hoping that this increase doesn't bring along with it any new or increased side effects! I will keep you posted on what is going down from this point :)

Day 39

Hi again everyone! I think we're finally getting somewhere! I believe it to be officially 3 days since I have had a new active, which is pretty amazing for me! I have a tiny bump on my chin, that will go in time, but not one which will ever come to a head (which I am very used to). Though I do suspect I have a bit of a bump forming on my chin... But still, 3 days is a breakthrough!

Day 42

So my skin has got slightly worse since I've had my dose upped. I have quite a large one near my cheekbone on the left side of my face, which I am hoping will go soon. I also had a couple on my chin (quite swollen ones) which I ended up squeezing! Oops. But apart from that not all that bad.. I have noticed my lips slightly drier than usual, but I have a night out drinking, which probably dehydrated me a little extra, so that's taken into consideration.

Apart from that all is well. I just need to back off from the alcohol a bit. But unfortunately, university life does not make it easy! Boo.

Day 44

I've begun to notice an increase in mouth ulcers recently. I had a large on in my cheek, and two on my tongue now! One which hurts and is quite unsightly. I have heard that there are side effects which do cause this, so I am wondering if it is the fault of the 'tane. It has recently started to push out a lump I've had under the skin for a long time, which isn't great, but at least it's getting rid of it.

I think i'm down to 2 pimples. Which isn't all that bad! Neither of which have come to a head, or i believe, will.
