Accutane - Very Mild, But Persistent Acne

Day 67

My recent break out has left me with a lot of red marks unfortunately, I believe this is the IB from upping my dose from 20mg to 40mg. Damned IB's! What can you do though? I seem to go through these phases where I don't get any pimples, then one day I'll just get a bunch of lumps appear on my face. It's extremely odd... Dry lips are persisting, however, they seem to be getting drier around the edges rather than on my actual lips.

I'm still at the point where I am sat thinking "when am I going to see results?!" because so far, I don't find that I am seeing any! Or not much, anyway. However, the turning point has to be coming up soon.... Right? So frustrating. I am now in the third month, so hopefully they are coming soon.

I do want to warn people about dry patches on the arms... Because when I first started getting them I was a bit confused as to what they were. Apparently its quite common. They're kind of like patches of eczema on your arms, that are slightly red and crusty? If that's the right word. Just don't scratch them as they seem to be going.

Day 72

So I've gradually been seeing an improvement over the last few days. I have only had 2 pimples over the last week, and each being very small in comparison to some of the ones I usually deal with. I have noticed an increase in dryness and flakiness around my nose, lower forehead and lips (more so around the lips rather than on them). I definitely contributed getting lots of lumps from an increased dose initial break out, though essentially, I am getting quite far into my course now. It won't be that long until I have completed 3 month!

My major side effect through this entire course has been ulcers. Many, many painful ulcers over the time I've been taking them, and mainly on my tongue. I will definitely be mentioning this to my dermatologist at the end of the month.

Day 78

So its almost been a week since my last update. I'm not sure if people actually still read this but I will proceed anyway!

I've begun to notice that the size of my pimples has reduced significantly, I mostly only get smaller ones, at least this week, which is pretty good to say it is exam season and I am pretty stressed! I've been getting these odd dry patches on my face I've noticed, and my nose and forehead is still quite peely. I've been noticing my eyes have begun to get sore, and I wonder if this is related to the medication? However, it may be that hayfever season is coming... I don't have hayfever, though I may be getting it? Who knows. I've also felt a bit more sleepy recently.

Day 84

Over the last few days I've had a couple of compliments regarding my skin! Which is very nice to get, saying that I look clear. I don't currently have any actives, however I have this little dry patch where I previously did which is annoying. But, I'm going to a concert in Manchester Tuesday, and I wanted my skin to look nice! So looks like it may well do!

I am approaching the end of my third month now, which is nice! It doesn't seem like I've been on them that long of a time, but since that bad breakouts from the IB, everything has been getting better! I have a feeling I will be upped at the dermatologist appointment... Which my lead to another IB which is scary. We'll see how it goes. :)

Day 91

Skin hasn't been all that bad recently. Had quite a big pimple pop up on the side of my face that I ended up squeezing, but felt I had to because it was so painful! Feels much better now, though it may leave a mark.... Let's hope it doesn't.

I have officially crossed the three month barrier and attend my dermatologist appointment on Tuesday, so I'm wondering if my dose will be upped or maintained.. Either way, I still feel that I haven't had the full benefits of the drug as of yet. I wonder when it's really going to kick in for me.

Day 93

So I attended my dermatologist appointment and it was a very simple review. I'm going to remain on 40mg for another 8 week then come back for a review.. That will mean I will have been on the medication for 5 month by that point. 5 month seems quite a short course in my eyes... And I am still getting pimples, though not as frequently as before. Does this mean I will see more results in these last few months? Hmmmm.

My first course was pretty easy and i cleared up for about a year. Then i started getting clogged pores on the fore Head. My derm decided to put me on cause she Saïd some people with oily skin require a second course. My skin after round one Was alot better and about half as oily. So im hoping after This course Ill Be good! Best of Luck to You, yeah There arent many people on hère with mild acné on accutane. I tried everything too but accutanes the only thing That really helped.

Hi! I see. I'm glad it cleared up the first time, though I'm sorry it's reoccurred! I could end up being in the same boat as you as I did have very oily skin before hand. Thank you! It's nice to have someone who is in the same boat and understands the annoyance of mild yet persistent acne!

Day 105

So I'm 3 and a half months into my course, still on 40mg and I recently have had a lot of pimples coming up! More than usual. This is very annoying because I would have thought i wouldn't get some many at this stage of my course! I have many 4? Which is a lot more than I've had in a while.. Though i'm hoping it's just my skin pushing the last few out.

Wish my luck because sometimes I get so frustrated!

Day 112

I'm not far from the 4 month point now! My face is pretty good. I have a couple of pimples on my chin which isn't too great at the moment.. I ended up squeezing them, but generally my face isn't bad. I feel like the marks I had on my cheeks are now fading quite a bit also.. No side effects really apart from the dry lips. I had a couple of drinks last night and I seemed to get drunk really fast. Maybe its a loss of tolerance.. who knows.

Day 116

Just wanted to report that I have NO actives at the moment! This is quite an achievement for me, as I always have at least 1. I have a fair few marks left but they'll fade in time. 4 more days until the end of the 3rd month, and the 4 month mark. It seems like I may finally be seeing some results from the medication!

Day 122

So, we've officially crossed the 4 month border, now entering the fifth month. So I was clear most of last week till it hit Sunday and I had one pop up on my chin. This is almost healed and I had a tiny one pop up between my eyes but it's not really anything. So they are less frequent but still appearing here and there at infrequent times. I've not squeezed the one between my eyes because they always look worse (plus i'm heading out to a new spanish restaurant tonight... haha.)

Lips are getting more dry than usual. Maybe its due to the hot weather (hot for the UK) but throughout the course they have never been so bad. I have a split in the corner of my lips that is killing! Persevere.. Persevere.

Day 127

I'm currently all clear with no actives at the moment which is great news. It seems to be hitting the point where I am no longer getting actives, apart from the odd one or two on occasion, which is a huge improvement from what my face once was! I also have no actives on my chest or back. My eyes have been getting dry I've noticed, which leaves them a little bloodshot, and my forehead is quite dry today, but apart from that.. No worries!

Day 133

Haven't had an active in well over a week now! I'm extremely happy! Can't remember being this clear for a long, long time.. It just shows that if you persevere through the process of Accutane, then it will eventually work. Hope this helps to inspire people who are only just starting or aren't as far through the process as me. It gets better.. Unfortunately, it takes time. On the other hand - good things come to those who wait! :)

Day 142

So time has passed again and still no actives.. which is pretty amazing. I'm not sure whether to keep writing here as i'm still on my course, but had not much activity going on.. I'm back at the derm on the 27th for my checkup which i believe will be the end of my course. However, that will only be 5 month which is unusually short, however, as stated in the name of this topic, I only had mild acne, so.. maybe it was enough?

I have been on 40mg for the past 4 month and have only missed one day to my knowledge. I'll update as to whether they up my dose, keep me on the same, or if they decide to take me off it!

I've enjoyed keeping this log if I'm honest.. It's been good to feel that I'm not alone and that I can kind of "vent". If that's the right word.. Even if it is just to myself here. I hope my experience will help other people in my position, but I promise you it gets better. When you have the horrible cysts that accutane brings out like I had, know that it will soon be over. Thanks to anyone who has contributed here and if anyone has any questions I will answer them the best I can. I just wish I had more questions to answer, so I feel that my experience and chance to help others isn't wasted! But if merely making this log has done that, then I am happy. :)

I appreciate your log and like knowing what I might expect. I'm only on week 3 and 40 mg. I'm so glad to hear how clear you are! Rest assured your blog is very helpful to us newbies!

Thank you Rwpennell, I hope it's all going well for you so far. I think the most nerve wracking time through the whole process is the periods of break outs, but they will subside gradually. Any questions, feel free to ask :)

Day 150

So still no actives, had a couple of tiny tiny red dots that have faded, but they were barely visible so couldn't count them as actives. Returned to my derm who said that I should finish what I have left of my tablets (just under a month's worth) and then return in 8 weeks for a review, and if everything is well, then I will be discharged. Hopefully everything will continue at a positive rate.

I have noticed one downside from this entire process is the slight weight gain (maybe 2-3 pounds) I've had, which I've attributed to the intake of fat with every tablet, which I usually wouldn't have done. I am thin with a small frame so this is noticeable (to me) so this part sucks a little! But can be something exercise and diet can deal with. But overall, the process has been extremely successful and positive!

In the UK mild to moderate acne which is unresponsive to other treatments such as topicals and oral antibiotics is being treated with isotretinoin (accutane) much more frequently now.

My daughter is 25, she had mild acne since the age of 15 - sometimes it would clear and then it would flare up again. She mainly had spots on her face with blackheads.

Eventually, after trying every treatment prescribable from her GP as well as us spending a fortune on chemical peels, blue light treatment, microdermabrasion and expensive creams/cosmetics I paid for her to see a Dermatologist who suggest roaccutane.

She's in her 3rd month and was given 60mg daily, quite high for an 8 stone girl. Her skin is now perfect - no spots, no blackheads and the texture of it is somehow finer.

At first her acne got quite a lot worse but this is just due to the sebaceous glands shrinking which squeezes the contents - it is actually a sign the accutane is starting to work.

The main side effect is very dry cracked lips but this is manageable with salves. The only other real side effect she has noticed is that she gets a bad hangover if she drinks much alcohol. Apart from that she is fine.

It has really transformed her life - she was quite down and low self esteem before and now she can go out with no make up and feels more confident.

She is worried her acne will return when she stops the treatment but her dermatologist reassured her that he will put her on a low maintenance dose if this happens.

So I just wanted to reassure people that accutane does work, it does have side effects but in our experience nothing too bad and it can be transforming!

Good Luck everyone.

Did it really helped with spots?

Did it really helpe with clearing spots? I'm going to take accutane in another week and I'm curious to know.

Did it help with clearing red marks? It would mean alot if you'd answer. Edited by LuminousSteel

Hi, in a word - YES!!! She finished the treatment in April/May last year. She has not had any spots since, her skin is so perfect that people don't believe she ever had acne. She's not needed anymore treatment at all. Long term effects - her skin is drier but nothing drastic that can't be sorted with a good moisturiser.

One thing she does wonder - and I would love advice on here - when she works with or meets someone with bad acne she really really wants to tell them her story but is too afraid of offending. She usually waits until they say something then she tells them she used to have acne and encourages them to get professional help.

People, you don't have to suffer for years. Don't put up with being fobbed off by lazy doctors, insist on referral to dermatologist - acne is a terrible disease and it is entirely treatable. How I wish I had helped my daughter years ago.

Have you heard it causing infertility? Do you know anyone who had babies after taking accutane?
