Do I Need Aha?

32 posts in this topic

Hi, I'm 18 years old, male and have acne on my chest. I have no idea on what determines mild or bad acne, but I constantly have around 15 spots from my lower chest down towards my belly button. I went to the Doctors years ago and received some cream which didn't work (can't remember what it was now).

Anyway, my friend used Cetaphil moisturising lotion and cleanser, along with the Acne.org treatment and has kindly given them to me. Should I use this for my chest / belly area? The reason I ask is because the body regimen states AHA should be used in place of the Cetaphil cleanser my friend used.

Another question, as the BP stains clothing, would using just moisturising lotion and AHA work? Thanks.

Here's an image of my chest, sorry it's not very clear. It actually doesn't show up as bad, but as I said for the last couple of years I've had about 15 red spots, some zits which never seem to clear up. http://oi42.tinypic.com/veyr1z.jpg

EDIT - I've not attached the image to the post because of the size it displays, instead a link is above, cheers.

try using the bp just at night with a white t-shirt on at first. AHA and BP never bleached any of my hair ever and im sporting some decent scruff on my face right now.

Thanks for the reply.

Any idea how long it takes for the redness/dry skin to start to happen? I started last night so have used the BP twice so far and no redness/dryness at all.

Sorry for the bump but would really like an answer ASAP so I can order as I live in the UK.

Do I need AHA for my chest/belly or can I use a moisturiser?

How long does it take for the BP to kick in and leave redness / flaky skin / itchyness? I've done two days so far and have no symptoms of this using Dan's BP.

I do appear to have some purple ish marks on my chest from where spots used to be. What is this? Thanks.

AHA used alone or without Benzoyl Peroxide will only treat mild acne at most, and not very well either. I highly suggest you keep using BP, it will take time just like it takes time for face acne to show improvement and disappear. Give it a month or two and possibly up to 4!. If youre going to use AHA, make sure to use BP with it. Oh, and those "purple marks" are just acne scars from the old pimples, they should fade away on their own, but moisturizer can help a little. Good luck!

Are you doing the body regimen or face? I've seen no improvement so far, literally no change in the slightest. Still no redness etc.

Good luck to you too!

Ah fair enough. Mines not too bad anyway, just an annoyance really, if I can clear it I want it gone! Are you using/planning on using AHA at all? Think I might order some and give it a shot in a few weeks time, nothing to lose, apart from a bit of money :P.

Sorry to post again, just so many questions popping into my head.

I've ordered some AHA for my chest and I was wondering, from time to time I get small spots on my face, nothing major at all. Would it be wise to put a small amount of AHA on these as they appear? Or would I need to go through the regimen process every time? Thanks.

Not sure right now. I might if i feel that i need something to give a little more "umph" in the regimen, only if my acne stops clearing up or doesnt show improvement, or maybe for whatever reason. If i have the money, i might give it a try to see what happens. But i need to wait atleast a month like it says

skin on the body is alot tougher than on the face, it shouldnt get very irritated, if at all. aha is just used to help speed the healing of hyperpigmentation and scarring. so if you have a problem with that then definitely use it

Are you still on the regimen? If so, please follow this quote which comes directly from here

"Glycolic acid can take The Regimen to the next level, helping you to achieve even more reliably clear skin. After you've been on The Regimen for at least 1 month, try using glycolic acid in place of your usual nightly moisturizer every 2-3 days. Alternately, mix an equal amount of glycolic acid and moisturizer in your palm and apply this way every night.

Flakiness control: If you are on The Regimen and are having problems with flaky skin, adding in glycolic acid as outlined above will completely eliminate flakes."

Sorry for the bump.

I've stopped with the BP now. Despite leaving it to dry for a minimum of 30 minutes my clothes were still covered in stains.

My question is, what else can I do? I've noticed I don't have too many spots on my chest area, most of the marks are purpley/red scars. Is there other products you can recommend to try?

At the moment I'm just using a cleanser and applying AHA although I have no idea whether this will help, thanks.

Anyone at all? Please.

10% glycolic acid would help mild acne such as yours.

You could also consider using 2% salicylic acid, high-dose retinol, or sulfur.

Yeah, like i said, use Dans AHA+ for acne scars. And if BP is too harsh or you dont want to use it, use Salicylic Acid instead of BP, and leave it on like you would leave on the BP.

Thanks for all the comments and sorry for the slow replies, extremely busy at the moment.

I've been applying AHA to my chest for a while now, I get the odd spot come through but am just left with marks from previous spots.

Does Salicylic Acid stain clothes? That was my only problem with BP. Also, do you have any recommendations for Salicylic Acid? I'm based in the UK if it makes any difference.

Thanks again.

Salicylic acid doesn't stain clothes. The only other acne-fighting ingredients that could possibly stain clothes are sulfur and/or resorcinol combinations.

Argh, I wish I knew more UK brands. As far as I know, La Roche Posay has at least a 1.5% salicylic acid treatment. Paula's Choice is sold in the UK--last I head shipping was pricey, but I think you can get free shipping. I don't know if Neutrogena is sold there.

This has 2% SA and dries up quickly on your skin. I believe it is alcohol based though which might dry out your skin :/ Nevertheless, check it out: http://www.amazon.com/Neutrogena-Stress-Control-Triple-Action/dp/B002F3QYZA

Thanks for the help and again, sorry for the very slow reply.

Should I moisturise, then apply salicylic acid, let it dry and then apply AHA?

And how much salicylic acid?

Thanks. I'll order some Salicylic Acid tomorrow. I'll be surprised if it dries my skin out as BP didn't affect me in the slightest after using it for a couple of weeks.

1.5% to 2% salicylic acid in the morning, and ~10% glycolic acid at night.

Both about a dime-sized amount for the face, including the jawline and a little on the nose.

You must wear diligently wear sunscreen, no matter what exfoliant you use. SPF 30+ suffices for most people.
