Probiotics Causing Breakouts

Something interesting I wanted to share. My doctor (not my dermatologist) suggested I take probiotics after antibiotic use. Over this past summer I took Accuflora and broke out on my face pretty badly. I didn't attribute the breakout to the probiotic at first, but I stopped taking it after about a month, and the acne subsided. I assumed I had broken out because the product contained traces of dairy. So this past month, I tried another probiotic (this time vegan) that had very high ratings on Amazon. However, not long after I began taking it, I got another breakout. I stuck with it for almost a month, but became annoyed and stopped. A few days after stopping, I'm breakout free.

Now, I think probiotics are beneficial and I'm disappointed that I can't easily take them. I don't want to dissuade anyone from using them, but I wanted to share my experience with them.

This is interesting. You might try yogurt and kefir for two weeks and see what happens. If you don't break out, then you could try different probiotics.

For example, the Vitamin Shoppe has wide range of probiotics, many of which must be refrigerated, and this might suggest a worthwhile clue, that they must be refrigerated.

It's important to balance out the harm done by antibiotics, so please tell us what you learn from your investigation.

I can safely rule out diet as an issue. I've done every anti-acne diet at this point in my life. None of them work, and I definitely won't ever put myself through those again. I must be sensitive to one of the bacteria that is in both of the probiotics. I don't buy into Candida overgrowth or leaky gut syndrome, so it's got to be one of the bacteria. If I'm ever feeling brave I'll think about adding some keifer to my diet and see how I react. Is that a dairy product? I've seen it but never looked closely at it.

ive been taking probiotics for around 3 months and they made me break out bad initially, i am still getting new spots every day but this was the same before i started taking probiotics.. i am putting my continual spots down to the probiotics overloading the bad bacteria and thus causing a die off reaction... initially upon taking the probiotics i had over 30 spots on my face, now i am down to around 15 or so

I concur with this. I tried the pearls and some expensive refrigerated kind. End result was more acne and loose #2 huh.png

Maybe to much for my body to handle. I choose a mild kinda with not so much bacteria culture as i figured less is more but alas it didnt matter.

I ate yogurt the other day. I figure if i do that sparingly this will count for my digestive health. And leave well enough alone.

Very curious about that remark. What exactly did you do?

Because its a truly healthy diet that clears acne and shouldn't be a traumatic experience for anyone other than perhaps a teen traumatized by not eating at mcDonalds and guzzling soda all day with friends.

Status: Clear after 30 years. Wow, I guess it's been 6 years, now.

[ Story: Severe Acne since I was 10. 10+ years of Dermatologists, Antibiotics, topicals and ACCUTANE did nothing. Discovered oranges triggered the worst of my cystic acne = about 70% improvement. Tried some nutrient supplements like B-complex with zinc and C, saw palmetto and a BHA like the aspirin mask = more improvement, a lot less oily. Then, Diet changes = Clear.

Regimen: Anti-inflammatory, nutrient dense, blood sugar stabilizing diet and supplements (for hormones, inflammation, aging, health). No soap or other cleanser except for hand washing! Water only or Oil cleanse. Aloe Vera mixed with niacinimide and a high linoleic acid oil for moisturizer and reduce pigmentation.

Diet effects acne in so many ways: hormone balance, inflammation, Insulin levels, digestion, allergies and intolerances, liver function, adrenal function, SHBG levels, sebum quality, cell function and turnover, nutrient deficiencies, body fat, etc. Basic advice: Eat, sleep, supplement and exercise like you are a diabetic. And eat real food!

I have a similar story to share, for a long time I was taking probiotics (they really helped my stomach problems) but I never noticed any significant effect either way on my skin. I went off of them for a while because I noticed that drinking Kefir was enough to keep my tummy issues at bay and probiotics are expensive. However, when I started a new antibiotic regimin, I got a yeast infection FROM HELL (cue O' Fortuna and evil demon laughter). I mean, I could not do anything but cry and beg for it to be over.

After it finally subsided after using prescription topical and oral anti-fungals (the OBGYN didnt want to take any chances), I still didn't feel quite right "down there", and kefir wasn't helping. Then, I went to a health food store and on a whim, looked in their pro-biotics section. They had a brand called "Ultimate Flora-Women's COmplete" probiotics. It was expensive, but their claim to fame was that they had all the probiotics necessary for both digestion and vaginal health, and the probiotics were in an extended release pill that would prevent the bacteria from being destroyed by stomach acids. I tried it, and for a month of taking it religiously everyday, all my 'downunda" issues cleared up, and I noticed my skin clearing too (a tiny bit - nothing miraculous). When I ran out, I went back to that store and I saw that they were out of the "Women's Complete", but they had a different type under the same brand (Ultimate Flora) called "Ultra Potent". It had the same strains as the "Women's complete" but I noticed some extra Bifido strains that the other one didn't have. I figured it was better than nothing (I wasn't going to go on a scavenger hunt) and I took it home. During the month that I used this stuff, my face stopped improving and new cysts/nodules started forming, and other ones came back. Just a couple weeks ago - when I ran out of the "Ultrapotent" probiotic, I found "Women's Complete" again, and once again - I am noticing "slight" improvement in my skin, calming down, etc. Could this be a coincidence? Possibly. But - it might be helpful to pay attention to the strains of probiotics you are taking.

Yeah, I thought I had a healthy anti-acne diet too, until I found out I can't eat tomatoes. What you consider healthy might not be the healthiest for your body.

Also, not everyone needs to supplement with probiotics. If you don't need them, you don't need them. Sometimes there is an IB when taking probiotics, but if your breakouts lasted for a month then you probably just don't need them or you can't tolerate one or more of the strands in the probiotic supplements you were taking. Anyone trying out probiotics for the first time should start with a low dose and, to be safe, start with just acidophilus. If you are reacting to acidophilus, you most likely will react to any other probiotic on the market.


Current regimen: garlic supplements [as needed], Enzymedica gluten blocker [as needed], nicadan [not sure if it works yet]. I try to simplify as much as I can. Don't take more supplements than you need....try one at a time and be patient.

The supplements that really helped me when my acne was at its worst: inositol, DIM [not as frequently now!] digestive enzymes [don't need them every day anymore, only on cheat days], herpanacine & vitamin C with rose hips/ low acid [not every day], regular sun exposure for vitamin D3, superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme supplements. NOTE: I do not recommend DIM for long term use, and I do not recommend hormonal creams without doctor supervision.

Lifestyle & Skin Care: acupuncture, regular exercise/ yoga, low histamine diet, avoiding unnecessary stress, balancing skin's PH (using Image Ormedics), using distilled/ filtered water to wash face, occasional high frequency facials...

It might depend on the amount of probiotic cultures she was taking. Last time i checked they offered like 12 billion per 1 pill? Yeah... might have significance.These are the things not mentioned or seen often in reviews and claims on these boards that users need to be critical of.

Diet is bullspit/means squat for certain acne patients, such as myself. Sometimes it lies in hormonal genetic disorders. Some of us have spent close to a decade ruling out "food intolerance" and honestly it's a waste of time. Still, nobody can tell me why the person next to me can eat ANYTHING they want and have clear skin. I believe hormones in dairy might be bad for acne but that's as far as I go and eliminating the entire universe of foods hasn't helped me fully.
