Hello everyone on acne.org! Oh how I love this site and the kind hearted people who make this place feel like home.

So if you have ever read my previous log know that I have been using BP for the past year with pretty good success. Here is a very short summary of my skin, and DKR regimen.

I began The Regimen July 14, 2012. I had 60+ bloods pimples, cysts, and everything you could think of (if you do not believe me check out my gallery). I saw no results with BP until about 2 months in. After three months I was 100% clear. After about a year on the regimen I stayed 95% clear, however as time went on I began experiencing more irritation and uncomfortable symptoms from the treatment. I began (again) to search for something natural.

I found thyme tincture. It was shown more effective at destroying P. acnes (the bacteria associated with pimple formation) than Benzoyl Peroxide itself! This was pretty astonishing news. I do have to point out that they tested this in petree dishes and not human skin, but it is still very intriguing, at least to me, that a natural herb could be more effective than the most effective over the counter acne treatment without all the horrible side affects most people will get. Here is the link to the study so you can see for yourself:http://www.scienceda...20327215951.htm ( I will find a better link soon)

So since yesterday I began my new regimen with thyme tincture. I use the thyme as a toner, and this is the recipe I follow:

1/4c Thyme (purchase at the spice aisle, or health food store in bulk, which is much CHEAPER)

3/4c Witch Hazel (I use the brand Humphrey's, but any 86% witch hazel and 14% alcohol should work, so no need for name brand. Only make sure there isn't ANY other ingredients in it other than the above two)

(Keep in mind that before thyme I was using three pumps of BP to stay clear, if I used any less I would literally breakout in 12 hours or less)

I mix these two ingredients together into a clean, dry jar and shut tight and let it sit for as long as you can. I mean for a few weeks. I started using mine after 20 minutes of making it, but just realize that it is more effective the longer it is left in the jar. I made two jars just so that I always have another very potent batch ready for when I need it. The 14% alcohol in the witch hazel it what brings out the active ingredient in the thyme that fights and kills the bacteria on the skin. Also the amount of alcohol in the witch hazel isn't much, and will not make you feel nearly as dry as BP. ***Remember to close the jar tight! It will evaporate if left slightly open. This happened to me :/ so just a warning!

I put 3-6 layers back to back of this toner on my face twice daily after cleansing, waiting each layer to dry (which does not take long). This is just to make sure I have enough to effectively kill that bacteria. I usually err on 4-5 layers just to be safe so thyme can penetrate my pores effectively. Best to use a cotton swab. I also put some in a spray bottle and spray during the day, this is just an option though.

I will continue to update my process with this new regimen! Stay tuned everyone!

Day 1 Update:

No pimples! Hurray! Let us just hope that it continues smile.png

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Day 2 update:

Still no pimples. I did not use any BP today and man it feels weird! I was so used to slathering that stuff on!

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Day 3 Update:

I am still not breaking out. I am amazed at what is happening to my skin. Usually without BP my skin would freak out on me and breakout within hours of not using three pumps of it. I really hope this natural alternative to bp will save my skin.

Day 4 Update:

Pimple free once again!  rolleyes.gif This stuff seems to be killing off the p. acnes bacteria fairly well. I am praying that I do not breakout all of a sudden. I am still very very surprised I haven't already.

I would really like Dan Kerns opinion of thyme tincture…how would I get ahold of him??? Hmmmm….

Well it seems not many people are interested in this thread comfort.gif lol, but that is okay hopefully with continued success people will begin to try for themselves to see its benefits!

Interesting if this works, because acne isn't caused by P. acnes. Perhaps it has some sort of anti-inflammatory effects. Maybe there's even a compound in there that is some sort of anti-acne agent.

Edit:  "Herbal preparations are less harsh on the skin due to their anti-inflammatory properties while our results suggest they can be just as, if not more, effective than chemical treatments."

From that article. This looks like it has potential.

Hello, thank you for posting! rolleyes.gif

Well p. acnes contributes to the development acne for most people and thought to be caused by other things like hormones. There isn't just one cause. There is many other sources and countless scientific literatures that will  tell you the same. I was using BP the last year to up the day I began this new regimen and the only reason BP kept me clear as well as everyone else who has had success with it, was because it pushed oxygen into the skin, which makes for an environment inhabitable for p. acnes (this is also proven and all over the internet). Maybe for those people that did have not had success with BP have other causes of acne. I do not know. No one really knows. The link in my first post shows that thyme killed p acnes bacteria faster and more effectively than BP.

Also I have used many other herbs that are anti-inflammatory and none of them worked. Only thyme. Perhaps it is because my acne is severe and only responds to aggressive treatment like the miracle that is DKR and possibly this new thyme tincture regimen.

I hope I continue to stay clear! Yay! Thanks again for your input!

Day 5 Update:
Very clear! If I were still using BP i would have gotten a pimple or two by now, but with thyme I still do not have any. I know it is still early to say, and I could possibly breakout in tons of pimples one day, but from what I am witnessing thyme tincture so far it is more effective than BP. Acne.org this is really amazing. I needed three pumps every day twice a day to stay 95% clear, and now with this new regimen I am staying 100% clear. I really hope you all do some research on it as there is tons of supporters out there. This may be the new face of acne treatment!!!!eusa_pray.gif

Yes the P. acnes does inflame spots (although it is uninvolved in uninflamed spots - which is what I was getting at, sorry if that wasn't clear). BP works mostly via its anti-inflammatory effects, which is thought to be caused by the reactive oxygen species being pushed into the skin, as you said; these ROS cause gene changes that induce a protective effect. If it was just bacterial, you would see a rapid response, similar to the response you see in fungal skin infections, which are often cleared/significantly improved within a week. Treating acne with BP takes quite a bit longer, because gene regulation changes deeper in the skin can't really be seen instantly.

But of course I have a feeling this thyme thing is pretty useful. Do you know where you got the tincture/how expensive it was? I sort of want to try this.

I made my tincture! You can buy it on amazon, however, it is really expensive and the alcohol is really high which can cause extra irritation.

So I use the following:

1/4c Thyme (you can find this in the spice aisle, or at health food stores you can buy in bulk and it is much cheaper)

3/4c Witch Hazel (I use the brand Humphrey's, but any brand with 14% alcohol and the rest witch hazel and absolutely nothing else will also work) You can find it at drugstores and walmart for 5-10 dollars)

I mix these two ingredients together into a clean, dry jar and shut tight and let it sit for as long as you can. I mean for a few weeks. I started using mine after 20 minutes of making it, but just realize that it is more effective the longer it is left in the jar. I kinda copied from the original post, with a little extra!

Then i put 3-6 layers on this toner on my face two times a day, waiting for each layer to dry!

I got home from school to find a blackhead I had for the past 10 days or so turned into a tiny zit! Ah lol. I guess I should count that as one pimple so far from using thyme tincture. I am going to use this tincture for one month or so before I decide whether or not to continue. Does that seem long enough to you Quetzlcoatl? Also how is your skin, are you on a specific regimen for acne?

This is really interesting! I love the idea of herbal treatments and I've tried a few out myself but not this one. I definitely want to try it now! I hope it works out for you :)

Please keep us updated! I am interested to see how this turns out. I have a huge cyst on my upper cheek that's been there for 2-3 weeks, and isn't budging at all.. I'm tempted to try your thyme mix and see what happens!

Please try! Or I would at least make it and let it sit so that it continues so it gets potent until you decide to use it, the more potent the better it will work. And i know what it feels like to have a cyst there for weeks, horrible feeling I know. I hope that it dies very soon!

Day 6 Update:

That minuscule zit is now gone. I do not even know if it was really a zit honestly lol. So back to clear skin for today! You know it took a lot of courage to try this new treatment. I was so scared of breaking out and causing more scarring. Three pumps of BP twice daily wasn't enough to keep me 100% clear, yet this simple regimen is keeping my skin even clearer. The texture of my skin feel so different. It feels super soft and happy. I have no irritation, dry patches, or flaking.

Anyway I so thrilled people are finally getting interested in this post, makes me happy teehee.gif Remember I am really happy to answer any question! Also for those interested maybe you all should just make the product since it shouldn't cost more than 9 or 10 dollars, and just let it sit and increase in potency to bring out the active ingredient that seems to be destroying and preventing acne??? Follow the directions in the first post and ask me for any clarification! I am going to continue this journey for a while yay!

Very cool!

I just ordered a product from a natural store, and its first ingredient is Thyme. I'm afraid to use it all over my face as it also has tea tree oil in it (and I'm kinda allergic to tea tree oil...), but it got really nice reviews.

I may try your thyme tincture! Thanks for putting your skin on the line-- I know it's hard to stray from a regimen that's keeping you clear. Love the updates! :D

Well aren't you sweet :)

I am glad I put my skin on the line, because if I could help clear just one persons skin that would make me happy lolteehee.gif  (but i was still scared!HAH). I really hope you like this new product, and I have a feeling you will because of that first ingredient! If you do love it make sure to review it and let people know, this is the way we can reach out and help others. ;)

This is an interesting idea. Hope it continues to work well for you!

Just a question though - had you stopped BP for a while before starting with the thyme? (And if so did you experience the BP 'withdrawl' breakout?) Or did you just go straight on to the thyme?

I plan to continue with the regimen but I'll definitely keep this thyme tincture option in mind!

And no I was using three pumps twice daily up till I began thyme. That is because I would breakout hours after I skipped an application, seriously, my skin is horrendous like that. Three pumps wasn't enough to stay clear. That is why I feel so strongly about thyme even though I have just began a week ago you know?

And I understand. It is definitely hard to stop something that is working so well already. I thought the same thing when I was successful with the regimen haha. Well at least you know there may be another option :)

Cool post. Even though I have had tremendous results from the regime ( severe acne to perfect complexion in 8 months) without seeing any negative side effects I am interested in learning new and maybe improved ways of fighting acne. Good luck on your new adventure :) thereisalwayshope

I hope not too! :P

I just know from past experience of using BP for a long time, then quitting it suddenly - I had quite a breakout... But that could be because I didn't immediately find something else that worked like you have!  It seems really promising that the thyme has begun working so well for you and doing what BP couldn't do for you (even after 3 pumps) so hopefully things keep going so well!!!
