Oil Cleansing Method - Ruined My Skin And Now I Can't Fix It No Matter What I Do! Please Help!

Syllacrostics - I realized that our reply's were getting quite long so I thought it might be easier for us-and other readers-if I posted a new response. That is seriously some great information! I definitely think you described the difference between hyperpigmentation and erythma perfectly! You explained it in a way that I can understand which is awesome. The next time I wash my face, I'm going to press down on the marks and figure out what I really have going on. I've never heard of the Makeup Artist's Choice brand for the peels but I like the fact that yours comes in a kit with the pH prep solution. I found a lot of good responses about the Skinceuticals brand and their lactic acid peels....do you know anything about the difference between these two brands? I'm going to dig in and research the two because it sounds like that is right up my alley!

In conjunction with your response about looking good into your 50's, I feel the same way! Haha. I plan on getting a TON of these TCA peels (unfortunately, it seems like I got the worst permanent damage to my skin from the OCM out of everyone here) and since they get rid of fine lines and everything else, hopefully the both of us will be looking young and renewed through our 50's! hifive.gif

What's so crazy is that my father has the most INCREDIBLE skin I've ever seen. He's 63 and looks like he's 45 because he has only the smallest and unnoticeable lines. Aside from that, his skin is FLAWLESS! Not a mark or blemish in sight. Now my mother on the hand, it's clear I've taken after her. Haha. Hopefully as I get older, my genetics will fall in line a little more with my dad's than my mom's. Here's to hoping! eusa_pray.gif

Good idea, haha.

I don't know much about other brands for chemical peels. I have heard of people using Skinceuticals but not much more than that. Probably both are good, but I like MUAC because it's cheap! :P Also, they ship really fast.

My parents are "well preserved" too.. so maybe I'll be spotty when I'm young but then youthful into middle age and later. Maybe that is not so bad!

Hi guys, I had used sunflower oil and caster oil. It was a horrendous experience for me. I now use cetaphil soap for gentel sensitive skin twice a day. I use differin cream (from my dermatologist) once a day at night before bed. My skin has now cleared but I still have some scars. I would never recommend OCM to anyone in the world. It ruined my skin :( I hope you are all recovering from the affects of OCM. Accutane is the only thing that cleared me.

Yep, can completely relate to the majority on here....I did the OCM method, which is why I'm now back on The Regimen...my chin broke out horribly and then my nose (of all places!) broke out. I was devastated! So, now, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place...at first, the OCM looked wonderful-my skin GLOWED and I looked 15 years younger (Which is awesome when you're my age)! But then the aftermath was just hideous...back on The Regimen and I'm dry and a bit wrinkly, lol. The price I pay for clear skin, I guess huh.png

Current skin care routine:

AM

Rainwater Botanical's Soap for Troubled Skin

Spot treat with Acne.org's AHA

Clinique Moisture Surge Intense

Clinique All About Eyes with Baobab oil

PM

Clinique Take the Day Off Balm with Adzuki Micrograin Facial Scrub (All natural-awesome stuff!)

Acne.org Cleanser for extra cleansing ( I wear a full face of makeup)

Frugally Sustainable Blemish Astringent/or Rainwater Botanical's Toner for Troubled Skin (All natural-very soothing and non-drying)

1 1/2 Pumps of Acne.org's 2.5% BP

Clinique All About Eyes with Baobab oil

Acne.org's Moisturizer (small amount)

When I get home from work, I like to let my face breath, so generally, I will use Clinique Take the Day Off Balm with the Adzuki micrograins, followed by a more gentle regimen. Currently, I am using Bare Minerals Blemish Treatment on any actives...LOVE this stuff!

I've recently added a mask to my routine. It's all natural and very cheap. Bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar mixed with a wee bit of tea tree oil. This is great for blackheads!

I am currently 100% clear with this mostly natural regimen.

Once you start adding the AHA to the regimen, your skin will look glowing and young again. I started using AHA and BHA 2 months ago for clogged pores and comedones. Now not only those are gone, it also erased the little wrinkles here and there, and my skin is the best ever since I was..well..probably 11 which was the age before I started having acne LOL

Successfully on "the regimen" from age 12 to 33 for cystic acne

Now:

100mg spironolactone since 08/13

Paula's Choice BHA 2%,

Green Cream 6 Retinol

Acne free and already almost free of hyperpigmentation, discolorations and wrinkles

I think I will be doing that! It's funny...this morning I was thinking the exact same thing too..."now that I'm clearing up a bit, I wonder if it's a bit too early to add the AHA"...hehe. I'm sure the few pimples I got going on my face would benefit from the AHA too. Thanks for your input!

Nothing influences the oil glands but ANDROGENS. No topical will control oil! And the idea of mixing oil with oil to mimic healthy sebum is a fallacy which is why the OCM is inappropriate for an oily skin type. the OCM is for mature skin.

The same exact thing happened to me! It's taken about a year buy my skin is clear and smooth again. With the exception of a few pitted scars from the oil cleansing catastrophe. I've used a salicylic acid wash, bp gel (only at night) and niacinamide cream to fade the scars. I also rotate in a retinol cream which helps flake the bad skin off. I use aquaphor on any dryness the bp causes and it does not cog my pores! Great stuff. The key I've noticed is to cleanse thoroughly and exfoliate regularly. Salicylic acid has been the most helpful ingredient for me.

Dunno if i'm late with this, but yes, the EXACT same thing happened to me too and now I'm using African Black Soap along with my prescription topical and it does seem to be getting better biggrin.png Try the African Black Soap, it's amazing....just make sure you have a good (not oil) moisturizer! xx

I did the oil cleansing method in early September and by October, I started getting 3-4 pimples on my right cheek which I thought was strange because I had never broken out on my cheeks before. Before starting, I had maybe one pimple. I was just trying to get rid of existing blackheads with OCM (used olive oil, castor oil, and tea tree). Fast-forward to today and I have terrible inflammation on both cheeks and chin and jawline. My forehead is clear of pimples but covered with blackheads and my skin looks leathery. For about a month, I had no space between pimples, it is such severe acne. I never had acne this bad even throughout puberty. My face is very raw feeling and hurts to touch. Pus keeps oozing out of my skin if I move my face a lot. I've got "hard" areas on my cheeks that feel like they are filled with pus. I have to sleep with gauze on my face to keep the acne from popping on my pillow at night. To the person who tried the African black soap, is it still working? I just got some myself and I like it so far, but it seems to really be trying out my face a lot. I'm also applying aloe vera gel (the fruit of the earth brand) to my face afterwards as a moisturizer with tea tree oil mixed in. Do you think I should be using tea tree oil...will it clogged my pores like the other oils? I don't know if aloe is enough of a moisturizer. Also, I have been using Aztec bentonite clay a few times a week as well as St. Ives Scrub (don't use that often because exfoliating hurts my acne).

What do you guys suggest. I'm so sick of this acne:((

I had the exact same reaction. I basically followed a variation of the regimen from this website... gentle cleanser, 2.5% BP, moisturiser... day and night. I really plastered my inflammed areas with the BP. This cleared me up pretty quickly, considering how damaged my face was (maybe 2 months). You may also benefit from a low dose antibiotic, nothing long-term. I started taking one and it really helped kill all that junk in my skin!

Try to be as gentle as you can be.

I found that when I got super crazy with the masks and whatever to get clear, it made things worse.

It's been about 4.5 months since my skin looked its worst ever... and it's finally more or less back to normal. Still a lot of PIH, especially noticeable since my skin was broken out basically everywhere. Yes, it takes a while to get back to healthy normal skin but you will get there! Be patient and keep up hope.

Do you recommend seeing a dermatologist for the antibiotic, or can you get that from a general doctor? What is PIH? Also for the BP, what kind did you get? LIke a spot treatment with BP?

I got my prescription from my regular doctor.

I was using Paula's Choice BP... but Neutrogena on the spot is good too. Basically a 2.5% concentration that dries clear is the best ... because you can wear it in the daytime and not have white stuff all over your face.. totally embarrassing ! :P

PIH is post inflammatory pigmentation.. basically the red spots that are left over from an acne spot.

When I go to the grocery store with my bf, every time, without fail, as we pass the oil section he still points to the coconut oil and says, 'Hey, remember when you rubbed that on your face? Remember what happened?!' By now, he is so bored with, and numb to my endless crazy skin experiments, it surprises me that he remembers this one! I guess his memory of my skin after that experiment is the litmus test to say that the OCM with coconut oil was by FAR, the worst breakout I've ever experienced in my life. That was in February 2013, it took 2 months for the clogged pores & cysts to clear up.

I had to do a gentle, thorough, intense pore exfoliation/degunking treatment for quite some time. I still follow the degunking routine, as I think I taught my pores a bad habit when I let the coconut oil ravage my skin...now they clog up so quickly if I give a little slack on the exfoliation/degunking. Here's a link to the routine I followed to pull my skin out of the OCM coconut oil disaster. smile.png

Major degunking session:

http://m.delphiforums.com/gardenofwisdom/messages?msg=5302.6

Simple degunking session:

http://m.delphiforums.com/gardenofwisdom/messages?msg=8545.1

*The forum from which these links are taken is associated with Garden of Wisdom-an all natural, inexpensive product line that I have been using since the OCM disaster. I DIG their mandelic acid! (I could go on and on about several more of their products, but that's for another post!)

How did you degunk your pores? Did you breakout more then? OCM also ruined my skin completely!

You can degunk using chemical peels. BHAs are good for this because they can penetrate into the pore and pull stuff out better. Yes, you do have an initial purge with this, but it's worth it! The initial purge stuff is typically small whiteheads that clear up pretty quickly. I'm pretty sure the acids help to dry up active spots quicker too which is nice.

I am trying this at the moment but through a daily sauna session. Sweating it all out and letting pores open up to help the plugs/gunk soften and be released. Initial breakout is there, on one side of my face. Hope it will go away soon and that maintaining this regimen will mean clear unclogged pores. How long/severe was the initial breakout with your method?

I actually started after most of my ocm purging was done. But I still had quite a lot of clogged pores around my face. They lasted maybe a week? I still use the chemical peels every week and I have no more purging! So it's totally worth it !

hope it's gonna be the same with sauna. my skin was really congested and it feels much smoother now. feels good to sweat it all out. i've started 5 days ago along with following a strict detox regimen (no sugar, no gluten, no milk). hope the breakout is now finished. Out of the 4 papules that came out, 2 are on their way down, 1 seems to be decreasing as well. But one is quite big and I hope it's gonna reduce in size....

Resa93 the oil cleansing method RUINED my skin. I had great skin before and had used proactiv since I was 16 (I'm now 31). I used to get compliments in my skin all the time. I don't know what possessed me to try oil cleansing. I must say the acne.org regimen is the only thing that helped me. I first went back to proactiv because it had always worked great for me. Then added antibiotics. Nothing worked. My skin was a nightmare. I then found The Regimen. This was back in June. I started the regimen in July and have been consistently clear since the end of September. It does take some time but it's worth it. I follow the regimen using over the counter products. I wash my face with Purpose gentle cleansing wash. I use Neutrogena On the Spot benzoyl peroxide. To moisturize I use Neutrogena moisturizer for sensitive skin at night and Neutrogena with SPF 15 in the morning. You'll be tempted to exfoliate when you start getting some dryness from the BP but don't! Every time I gave in and exfoliated, I broke out terribly. The dryness subsides. I started seeing a huge improvement in my skin the first week. In my experience I would get clear and then break out again for the first couple months until I finally cleared completely. Stick with it! About 3 months into it I added in some AHA to help fade spots. If you follow the regimen exactly ( no masks, no scrubs! Although it's tempting!) I promise you'll see results! Good luck:)

Puring relief that really did help me in one day! I hope this helps everybody out there who is spending hours looking for help!

I just started OCM about a month ago. I used 1/3 hemp seed oil, 1/3 sunflower oil, 1/3 castor oil. I have acne prone skin and have tried EVERYTHING from the time i was 12 up to now 24 years old. The reason I wanted to do OCM is because I have blackheads and ice pick scars covering my entire face and now very minimal pimples every now and then. My face wasn't bad at all I just I wanted my pores to unclog and shrink. Form my research this seemed perfect. I steamed my face before hand with a washcloth laying it over my face, then rubed the oil on for about 10 mins, steamed again, and wiped off with the washcloth.

I choose the hemp seed oil and sunflower oil because they are rated a 0 on the Comedogenic rating (https://www.beneficialbotanicals.com/facts-figures/comedogenic-rating.html) so they will not clog your pores. Another important thing is Hemp seed oil will spoil easily so keep your mixture in the refridgerator and the orginal bottle of pure hemp seed oil in the freezer. It should be fine. If it starts to smell rancic throw it out and make a new mixture. I suggest not making a huge batch espcially if you are just trying it out. The first two weeks was fine. I had blackheads and plugs literally coming out onto my hands. I was super excited. Two weeks later my face exploded over night. I mean, red spots everywhere, blackheads, little white heads, and big pimples on the jawline. My face felt like a giant scab and it was so sore. It hasn't been this bad for over 10 years. I was embarssed and so sad that I felt like i was in middle school again. I wasnt sure If I was going through the so called "purging stage" or if my skin just didnt like it.

I stopped the oil for a few days and my skin didn't really calm down. I didnt want to stop because I read so many people trucked through this stage and their face bounced back better than before. So i did my research and I found that castor oil causes major problems for people. I even found some people just cut it out completely. I was afraid to change my ratios thinking it would confuse my skin even more but I went for it. I changed my ratio to 1/2 hempseed, 1/2 sunflower, a teaspoon of castor and a few drops of tea tree oil. I also learned that steaming the skin can actually irratate sensitive skin so I skipped this all together both at the begining and end. I just used a washcloth with warm water to wipe off any makeup or dry skin I had before hand. I cut my time down to 5 mins of rubing the oil on my face and i rubbed a lot lighter than before to prevent irratation as well. In stead of just rubbing the oil off with a washcloth and hot water, I also found out that people had great sucess with using african black soap (supposed to be great for your skin--walmart $5 http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/sheamoisture-african-black-soap/ID=prod6064944-product) to wash the soap off to insure all the oil was off my face. Then I either use a honey&cinnamon mask or Oatmeal&cinnamon&honey mask. The honey should be raw organic to reap the most benefits. I bought a little 8oz jar for $6 and it will last me a while since i only use about 1/2 spoon full. I don't do this everytime but when I do I normally keep it on anywhere between 20 mintues to an hour or more depending on how i feel. After I wash off with water and apply a toner of 1/2 raw organic apple cider vinegar (it is important to get the kind that is unfiltered with the mother--it will say it on the bottle, i bough braggs organic $5 http://bragg.com/products/bragg-organic-apple-cider-vinegar.html) and 1/2 distilled water. People say this was a god send for them because this is supposed to being the pH of your skin back to normal, so I tried it. Then I patted on very very little spot treatment all over my face (I just used the genaric equate brand from walmart) ***THE NEXT DAY MY FACE IMPROVED SO MUCH!!!*** It wasn't dry, the redness was decreased, the bumps also decreased. I know this seems like an overload but everything I used was all organic (except the spot treatment) so there are not any harsh chemicals in these things to kill and irritate your skin. All this together (not including the oil) cost me about $20 but it will last me for at least 3-6+ months easily. This process is only about a 10 minute thing (not including if you use the mask).

I hope this helps some of your who are researching helpful hints for your "purging" stage. Some people cant handle OCM and if this last for more than a few weeks I suggest stopping before you scar your skin. Plus there is no point in suffering if it isn't working for you. I was so sad that my skin exploded so I research for at least 12 hours before I decided what I was going to attempt to fix it. Don't freak out and go buy all these chemical masks, face washes, and treatments. They will more than likely irratate your skin and make it worse.

Good luck:)

Thanks for responding and for your suggestions! The method I'm using now seems to work some days but then other days I get like 10 new zits/whiteheads. It's very frustrating...just when you think it's starting to heal, it flares up again :( I think I need to get some BP..I have not tried that yet. I'm going to try to add the On the Spot stuff into my current routine. I think I'll stick with the African black soap for cleanser, use BP, and then moisturize (i just got a new moisturizer...garnier oil free gel cream). hopefully it will clear soon and thanks again!

Now I know why I started breaking out so bad a month ago! because of the oil cleansing method...I read it somewhere online and even watched a YouTube video. So I was convinced and started the OCM. Then I started seeing more clogged pores and some pimples on areas that normally don't get acne. Fortunately I stopped doing the OCM soon...but it took me a while to stop the breakout. Now all the clogged pores are forming into pimples. I just started Dan's regimen and hopefully that will clear me up.

OMG

i am going through the same thing, although i did not do OCM, i did topical oil (blend from this herbalist who i used to think was amzing..) after washing.. the first red flag was that she recommended using paul mitchell shampoo for cleanser... UM what ? woman, are you and herbalist or aren't you ?

up until 2.5 months ago i had been clear for 5 years using DKR. i have gotten cystic zits in the past, but NOTHING LIKE THIS. i went to my derm and she said i had 40 zits. FORTY. i believed her because i lost count. i usually know the exact location and stage of every zit on my face. they all run together now.

also, my entire lower face has been swollen for the past week .... ? has this EVER happend to anyone with acne ????? i look like i had my wisdom teeth out .. for real.

BUT she gave me doxy (100mg 2x perday for 3 wks) and a 2 week course of prednisone. in the mean time i am also starting the regimen again. my skin is incredibly irritated from the BP but i think it will work eventually.. just praying that the prednisone doesn't give me a bad flare when i finish.. i HATE drugs which is why i went to this herbal devil in the first place. i have been hiding in my house for 2.5 weeks straight .. literally.

SIGH.

so.. damn us for trying to go au natural ?

i don't know.. trying to find some meaning here because otherwise this has zero benefit to anyone.

The doxy should clear you nicely. Just be sure to have eaten something at least 30 mins beforehand and do drink a *full* glass of water with each pill so you don't get an ulcer.

Prednisone is a pretty strong medication - it's an immunosuppressant that affects all of your cells, and it's mainly used in life threatening allergic situations for the shortest time possible; I'm very surprised she would prescribe it for TWO weeks! If I were you, i would taper off the prednisone as quickly as possible (half of today's dose tomorrow, then a quarter the next day, then an eighth and then stop).

For anyone considering an oil cleanse, please use your head... You're adding comedogenic substances to an already oily face. What do you expect?
