I am happy to be the first person to complete this. Maybe I will feel satisfied that Ive done something and stop being so obsessive about the whole thing.

AuguriesoInnocence

height: 5'5"

weight: 125, when beginning

gender: female

I took accutane for 1 month in August 2012. My dosage was 10 mg for 2 weeks, 20 mg the second 2 weeks. I took accutane because Ive had acne since I was 12, it was mild until the beginning of 2012 when I got cysyic pimples on my jawline, chin and a few on my back. My skin was becoming increasingly oily.

My health was fine, aside from post-partum depression 5 years before, no major health problems.

I used a version of Dan's regimen which worked for 3 years but when my hormones got really ou ow whack (I have PCOS) no topicals helped. I tried the usual bp topicals, no retinoids, spironolactone which I couldnt tolerate, and changing my diet.

For two years before accutane I ate extremely healthy, no sugar hardly any carbs, no alcohol no smoking I ate mostly vegetables, lean protein, a lot of juicing and green smoothies, nuts, avocados fish etc. I was underweight. I specifically tried eliminating gluten dairy sugar etch fom my diet to cure my acne it did nothing in fact it just got worse. I never used any drugs.

I was moderately active with light workouts (aerobic and walking most of the year, outside). No weightlifting. I tried to drink enough water in fact I drank only water and teas but probably not what is recommended. My stress levels were moderate but I am an anxious person by nature.

I took a regular vitamin supplement for women on and off, never consistantly, it had vitamin A but not in excessive amounts.

My weight during and after accutane changed, I went from 125-ish to 112 at the lowest. I only took accutane at dosages of 10 mg-20 mg for one month. The reason I stopped is because I was having severe side effects and became suicidal.

OK Im going to do the checklist here.

[ ] Other --definately-- feeling I can only describe as intense dread or dysphoria, a feeling that everything is wrong, getting no pleasure from anything and being constantly afraid of some unnamed horror. Night sweats, panic attacks and fear of life in general. These mental effects lasted a good 3-4 months and I had to take an antidepressant and a tranquiliser (effexor and clonapin) I also have a lowered immunity and haave caught germs and viruses easily since.

I first noticed the side effects withing a few days. I remember in a weeka nd a half I had the noseblleds and peeling lips and fatigue. I felt depressed almost from the first 3 days, it seemed like every time I took a pill I felt worse. Accutane got rid of my excess oil and was beginning to clear my acne in 1 monh, however I stopped because I attempted suicide. I shortly foun dout I have PCOS afterward and started taking yaz which cleared up my skin and am still taking it.

Supplement-wise, I try to eat a lot of omega oil from flax, borage and fatty fish. Usually two pills per day. I still do vegetable juicing a few time a week. I take l-cartinine and zinc and l-lysine for post-accutane rosacea.  take a hairgrowth, anti-DHT supplement called Hairomega 3-in 1, one pill per day and 1 spearmint capsule OR two cups of spearmint tea. I take iron for anemia. I also am taking spearmint extract and saw palmetto for hairloss.

I contracted mononucleosis 3 months ago, I believe its from a lowered immune system and losing too much weight. I also have a eustachian ear problem called PET from fat atrophy, which ay aor may not resolve with added weight gain.

After the whole accutane/depressive scare, I changed my diet back to "normal" I eat moderately healthy dont cut out any food goups and eat desserts and drink alcohol on weekends. If anything I now know diet has  little do do with acne its mostly hormonal. Post accutane I still have skin sensitivity, sun sensitivity, rosacea, a bit of dry eye and lowered immune system.

Id absolutely tell everyone not to take accutane. I think its safer to take heroin and crystal meth if thats any indication. I felt horrible from the first pill, it affected my relationship with my family I went through hell and so did they. I did however leard to appreciate the people who love me more and I now know that clear skin isnt the end-all be-all. I will never forget the feeling of wanting to kill myself because I felt completely terrified, disconnected and hopeless. If someonw were desoerate to have clear skin Id tell them to try hormonal meds/supplements and try every topical because accutane is NOT worth dying over.

Negative Accutane Experiences Survey:

Name/username: Adam/Sgt Four Leaf Tayback
Gender: Male
Age: 19

How long has it been since you took Accutane?

I took accutane at the start of 2010 for 6 months.

Describe your skin before Accutane:

The odd whitehead/pustule however did have severe cysts on jawline that wouldn't go away, otherwise clear. No body acne.

Describe your health before Accutane:

Aside from cysts, great

Did either of your parents take Accutane or antibiotics?

No

Before Accutane, did you take antibiotics?

Yes, they did nothing

Did you use retinoids?

No

What other medications or supplements did you take before Accutane?

Some topicals which did nothing, not bp I think it was just crappy over the counter face washers

What was your diet like before Accutane? Describe a typical day's meals.

Horrible, I was never overweight always super skinny but on a typical day I would heaps of chocolate, oven baked fish/chicken, maccas, heaps of soft drink/energy drinks but I did eat fruit and veg everyday.

Did you drink enough water?

Nowhere near enough

Did you drink alcohol? On average, how much per week?

Rarely, but when I did I really felt it. Got drunk really fast

Did you smoke or use drugs? How often?

Never

What was your lifestyle like? Were you active?

Alot better than it is now since I have finished school and got a drivers license, sport several times a week with school and out of school 30 minute bike ride too and from school everyday plus commuting to part time work.

What was your stress level?

Low/nil

Height/weight during treatment:

175 cm/ 70 kilos

Age during treatment: 16

Dosage:20-40mg

Length of treatment: 6 months

Reason for stopping treatment:

No

Did you take a multivitamin during Accutane?

No

If so, did it contain Vitamin A? What kind?

Did Accutane clear up your acne? For how long?

Very much so, never bothered washing my face for an entire year I just forgot about it, acne came back about year after finishing with the odd pimple here and there. I didn't know how to react and would try to pop them making them much worse, I dealt with about 6 months of very minor facial acne perhaps one whitehead per week if that. My diet was crap/never exercised or washed my face so I was lucky. However at the start of 2012 I started getting back acne for the first time and facial cysts again.

When did you first begin to notice adverse effects?

6 months after finishing treatment

When did these effects become serious?

At 6 months post treatment

Has anything shown up abnormal on blood tests? If so, what?

Mark all of the side effects you have experienced.

Put two X's if you feel like the side effect has significantly impacted your life.
(Feel free to explain the severity and specifics of the side effects.)

[x] Chapped lips
[X] Increased acne
[X] Itching - I get random bouts of ithing on my back and shoulders
[x] Hair loss - All things hair related occured 6 months post treatment and subsided within a few months, hair chaged from super thick and wavy to thin and straight with random bits of wavy growths wich I hated. Hair felt like it never had oil and scalp had some minor flakiness to it wich has subsided. I was paranoid and thought I was losing my and would study my hair in the mirror for hours and despratley searching for cures. Reading stories about how people went bald from accutane. I found it really distressing as my hair was and still is mone of my defining qaulites. I'm always reffered to as mop head or people comment on it saying they are jealous. It was for the best however because now my hair has fully regrown to its original thickness, grows crazy fast and is now straight and floppy rather than wavy and coarse.
[x] Dry hair
[x] Dull hair
[x] Decreased rate of hair growth
[X] Change in hair texture
[X] Dandruff
[X] Dry eyes
[X] Irritated eyes
[X] Light sensitivity
[X] Poor digestion
[X] Food intolerances

I have pinned my acne down to being primarily food based, I if I have trouble digesting something like heaps of fast food I will get very minor clogged pores in random places like back of the neck or forehead that subside within a day. Since I have started eating healthy and using dans regimen as a safe guard I am 99 percent clear with the odd white head on my back or chin.

Which medications/supplements have helped you post-Accutane? Please explain how long you have taken them and what the beneficial effects are.

Zinc/vitamin D3 helped me with skin healing and acne prevention, doxycylone virtually eliminated my cystic acne post tane, I am currently using Epiduo and it works wonders, I used it as the bp in the regimine. I also use Apple cidar vinegar on my back wich works wonders also

Which medications/supplements have made your condition worse? Please explain how long you took them and what the harmful effects were.

Fish oil! Made my back acne ten fold worse.

Which medications/supplements have had no effect? Please explain the dosage and exactly how you took them.

Sacylic acid topicals did nothing

How has your diet changed since Accutane? Describe what worked and what didn't.

It has changed for the better, having acne made me want to tackle my diet and get it just right and it has been very rewarding. I straight up just dont eat dairy/chocolate drink milk whatever no dairy at all. That is what gets me, I eat alot of nuts and veges and omega 3 flaxseed. Lots of oats and fish and chicken. I do indulge in fast food once or twice a week which has little effect, maybe the odd whitehead on my back or neck from too much overindulgence. I find caffine and energy drinks dont agree with me as my stomach sometimes complains but I still have a coffee and a can of V everyday when i go to work/uni.

Have you made any significant lifestyle changes since Accutane? If so, describe them.

I go to the gym alot now/eat healthy/ started playing music

Do you feel like Accutane has impacted your life? If so, how?

Before I went on accutane the only thing I didn't like about acne was the pain it caused as I had cysts on my jawline, the appearance didnt bother me. i still went to parties all the time/ had girlfriends. However when my skin was clear post accutane I relised what I had been missing out on. i got A LOT more attention form girls and my confidence sky rocketed. But when it came back I started to care about the appearance and forget about the pain. Scrutinising every aspect of my skin, contemplating getting makeup even though in retrospect it was so minor. I walk around clear now seeing people with acne 100 times worse than mine was and living life to the full where as I would have stayed home and hid. Now that I have conquered it, for now at least it is a huge feeling of satisfaction and has made me strive to succeed in all aspects of life.

What would you tell anyone who is considering Accutane?

I would try BP and diet first which i did not do, I just jumped straight onto tane after dabbling in antibiotics and over the counter topicals. I feel like if i didnt go on tane I may niot have developed back acne, I am not sure. I feel kind of silly filling this thing out as it is not really thatn negative, it is negative in the sense that I wasnt one of those luccky people who was automatically clear forever after taking tane, I just had to work a bit harder. The side effects, although negative don't bother me anymore and were only temporary. I was one of the lucky ones really based on other experiences I have heard of, just not the luckiest. It should be noted the only reason I'm filing this out is because I ahve an assignment to do and I am procrastinating.

Which medications/supplements have helped you post-Accutane? Please explain how long you have taken them and what the beneficial effects are.
Prenatal vitamin-- over a year, has helped hair growth.
Evening primrose oil-- four months, has helped to moisturize skin and hair and stop my hormonal acne.

Which medications/supplements have made your condition worse? Please explain how long you took them and what the harmful effects were.
Biotin-- two months, gave me cystic acne, had no effect on hair
Ginkgo biloba-- one month, raised my acetylcholine levels and turned me into a hypersensitive, anxious, aggressive monster
Milk thistle-- one month, no physical changes, but raised oxalates
Magnesium, Melatonin, Vitamin E, MSM all increase DHEA, which is one of my problems. I didn't connect these supplements to my insomnia and brain fog until later.
I was only on spiro for a week, but if I kept on it, I'm sure it could have led to some problems, since it's an anti-androgen (halts oil production) and diuretic (leads to dehydration and brain fog.)

Which medications/supplements have had no effect? Please explain the dosage and exactly how you took them.
Probiotic-- about a year on and off, it's better to just have some greek yogurt or kefir since they're more bioavailable. I noticed no difference.
Fish oil, zinc, amino acid, artichoke, vitamin C did nothing.
Taurine-- used to lessen my hair loss but stopped. Research indicates it may have led to a hormonal imbalance.

How has your diet changed since Accutane? Describe what worked and what didn't.
I eat meat now and have gone low oxalate in an attempt to lower my DHEA levels and prevent further kidney damage. Oxalates are chelators that impair the body's metabolism and ability to detox, so cutting them out increases the amount of nutrients I get. I feel a lot better now. I try to make most of what I eat meat, vegetables, and dairy.

Have you made any significant lifestyle changes since Accutane? If so, describe them.
I drink a lot more water.
To decrease shedding, I wash my hair in black tea. I will pour a mix of tea and a tiny bit of apple cider vinegar on my hair, let it sit for a couple minutes, and rinse it out. The caffeine in the tea inhibits DHT and stimulates hair growth. The apple cider vinegar helps to balance the pH. Your hair needs a pH of 5.5 to be at optimum health. Water is 7, and hard water can be closer to 8! This has helped me a lot.
I'll put diluted apple cider vinegar on my scalp to get rid of dandruff.

Do you feel like Accutane has impacted your life? If so, how?
The Accutane fiasco has made me much more aware of exactly how anything I put into my body can affect me. Not just drugs, but things I didn't give a second thought about, such as caffeine, sugars, and oxalates. I thought since I had a fast metabolism and didn't gain any weight, I could eat whatever I wanted with no consequences. Not so. The dermatologist said that whatever I ate didn't affect my acne, but that was wrong. I saved myself before it was too late-- had I continued down that route, I would have gotten kidney stones and possibly worse insulin resistance.

What would you tell anyone who is considering Accutane?
Don't. There are much better ways to clear up your acne. Try the natural route first. Evening primrose oil did for me what Accutane couldn't do-- balance my hormones. There's always an underlying cause to acne; it's better to find it and correct it naturally than poison and damage the acne.

Gender: Female
Age: 26

How long has it been since you took Accutane? 10 years
Describe your skin before Accutane: Extremely oily, with severe cystic/nodular acne, oily hair, chest and back
Describe your health before Accutane: Average - suffered of headaches since I was a child, always been tired since I hit puberty, a bit of abnormal calcium levels

Did either of your parents take Accutane or antibiotics? No
Before Accutane, did you take antibiotics? Yes
Did you use retinoids? No
What other medications or supplements did you take before Accutane? Only the pill - Diane 35ED

What was your diet like before Accutane? Describe a typical day's meals. I was a teen so I ate a lot of junk, never ate recess or lunch at school, home cooked meal at home usually, followed by chocolate (mistake, I know)
Did you drink enough water? No
Did you drink alcohol? On average, how much per week? Never
Did you smoke or use drugs? How often? Never
What was your lifestyle like? Were you active? Moderate - I was in high school, so Phys Ed classes, walking to and from school.
What was your stress level? High - that's my nature I believe.

Height/weight during treatment: 160cms approx/58kgs
Age during treatment: 16
Dosage: 20mg tablets, morning and night = 40mg daily
Length of treatment: 6 months, prolonged to 9, stopped at 8 months to severe nose bleeds and extreme vision disturbances in the day and night
Reason for stopping treatment: I had technically finished my treatment at 6 months, it was prolonged due to my "fear" of acne reoccuring. I think that was the dermatologists stupidity to prolong it just because I was scared.

Did you take any medications/supplements during Accutane? No
Did you take a multivitamin during Accutane? No
If so, did it contain Vitamin A? What kind? -
Did Accutane clear up your acne? For how long? Yes, after about 4 months it was all gone. I continued to live acne free for 7 years. After 7 years I started breaking out a bit more, then over the next 3 years I have gone back to horrible breakouts, with fortnightly cystic break outs, although not as bad as pre Roaccutane.

When did you first begin to notice adverse effects? Probably 2 months in. Nose bleeds daily, joint pain, sunburn after 10 minute sun exposure when walking to the bus stop, major constipation, blood in stool, then around 7 months I started getting nose bleeds up to 3-4 times a day and my vision became blurry, spotty and I started to think I was losing my vision
When did these effects become serious? At 7 months
Has anything shown up abnormal on blood tests? If so, what? I have extremely high calcium, currently being investigated for hyperparathyroidism

Which medications/supplements have helped you post-Accutane? Please explain how long you have taken them and what the beneficial effects are.
Diane 35-ED worked for my acne until one day I got my period and I bled almost every single day for a period of 14 months. I stopped BC after that.

Which medications/supplements have made your condition worse? Please explain how long you took them and what the harmful effects were.
Norinyl (birth control) made me gain weight and made my acne go INSANE! I took it 4 months and after that gave up. Acne reduced almost immediately, but is still persistent

Which medications/supplements have had no effect? Please explain the dosage and exactly how you took them.

How has your diet changed since Accutane? Describe what worked and what didn't.
My diet hasn't really changed. I made the switch to Pepsi Max but am currently trying to stop drinking it at all

Have you made any significant lifestyle changes since Accutane? If so, describe them.
None are positive - I don't sleep anymore and I don't eat much. I've lost 12kgs in the last 2 years

Do you feel like Accutane has impacted your life? If so, how?
It did but I wouldn't change it. It gave me SEVEN years of acne free skin after I was near the end, ready to kill myself due to my cystic acne

What would you tell anyone who is considering Accutane?
Be aware of the risk!!! I did one course and didn't feel that it was that bad but I do regret that it thinned my hair A LOT! Other than that, I was happy with it. If I didn't lose so much hair, I would take a second course as suggested by my dermatologist.

I just wanted to say I have extensive experience with a hyperparathyroid diagnosis. Doctors barely know anything about it. But extremely high calcium levels can have very adverse effects on health and your body will lower it's vitamin D reserves to protect itself from absorbing excess calcium and raising your blood calcium higher.

I know and it's so frustrating. I went to a specialist yesterday and they said they are still not sure if I have hyperparathyroidism or if I have the one that is genetic from the family (my dad had it too and had surgery). I suffer from all the conditions of the disease, tiredness, headaches, memory loss, hair loss, depression, the list goes on! Also, I had extremely low levels of vitamin D yesterday and I was prescribed 100,000IU of liquid vitamin D. Unfortunately  I left there with no treatment and the doctor basically saying, "we don't know what kind of hyperparathyroidism you have so we're not going to do anything for the time being, come back in 3 months".

How has your diet changed since Accutane? Describe what worked and what didn't.
It hasn't changed, I eat exactly the same.

Have you made any significant lifestyle changes since Accutane? If so, describe them. Honestly, it has made me take better care of my skin and I couldn't be happier.

Do you feel like Accutane has impacted your life? If so, how? It was a great experience. I suffered absolutely no side effects and my skin completely cleared up.

What would you tell anyone who is considering Accutane?
I would tell them to take it. Accutane is much safer than long-term antibiotic use. The thought of accutane used to scare me and now I wish I would've taken it sooner. Everybody is different but I hope everyone has as good of an outcome as I did!
