Third Month, Day 1

First 2 months are DONE.  Triglycerides came down, and hepatic panel looks great.  I'm on 80mg and have a followup with my derm tomorrow afternoon.

My skin is dry.  My legs and the tops of my feet are itchy, so I smeared on a bunch of hydrocortisone.  My face is really red.  I went out of my way Sunday to wear sun block, but I think I burned anyway.  Patients keep pointing out how much sun I got lately, so I have to keep telling them I've been outside at the beach, or whatever :o

I can't tell if I'm more tired than I usually am since I haven't been NOT taking accutane since 2 months ago... just sort of accepting it for what it is, only a few months left.

So, my red, inflamed face looks terrible.  I covered it in Desonide, and even put Denoside on my lips (topical corticosteroid).  I'm hoping that calms down things.  Letting that sink in, then will moisturize my face and stay inside until morning.

I hope I don't have to lower my dose, I'm thinking it was the sun that did me in, even though I wore sunblock (I think it was SPF 30 or 40).  And, it's hard to stay inside because it's summer.

Also, I have this large cyst on the back of my neck.  I'll have to remember to ask my derm if he can I&D it tomorrow at my appointment.

I just discovered another large cyst on the back of my neck (a newly forming one), so I took a bleach bath again (took one a week ago when i first noticed the other cyst).  Last time I did accutane that worked.  But that won't help the 2 cysts I have now on the back of my neck.  Hopefully the derm can do something about them tomorrow.

yo bro hang in there. I hated the redness too, but it goes away after you finish the course. you are an accutane veteran like me so I am sure you know what you are doing. Just don't do too much and use a good night cream to keep the skin moist during the night, it helps a bunch.

by the way, is your skin type very oily?

My skin is very oily usually, yes.

I just got back from my 2nd doctor appointment and got my 3rd prescription, 40mg twice a day.

My face is really red - he said not to go out in the sun, wear sunblock, and wear a hat.  The other doctors where I work yelled at me and told me I wasn't supposed to be in the sun at all while on Accutane.

For the cysts on my back and what keeps erupting on my face, he gave me oral Keflex 500mg bid x 10 days.

And for the whiteheads on my forehead, he prescribed Tazorac 1% and told me to use it on my forehead area every other day.

I didn't think you were supposed to use any topical while on accutane. My dermatologist was strongly advising that I only use a very gentle cleanser and a great moisturizer and nothing else. How do you feel about using a topical when you skin is already so dry?

Patience and the accutane is all you need, man. 2 months is early yet. Let it work and don;t stress about it. You are healing from the inside out. Topicals will make you even more sensitive to the sun. Stop that or you'll be sorry. Also, put sunscreen on your face before bed. It gets in there and works well this way. Of course, do it again in the morning. Some of the spray kind is the easiest. Get the hhighest SPF you can find that's dry/no shine. I fish and am on the water for hours at times. A widebrim hat and spf on the face is crucial to survival. also sunglasses. My eyes are super-sensitive to the elements now.

I think I'll just pickup the tazorac and keep it for later, because I think it would further irritate my skin and cause more redness and pealing.

What do you guys think about the Keflex, is that okay to use for a little while on accutane?

So I just bought this:  Neutrogena Wet Skin Sunblock Spray, SPF 85+, 5 Ounce

Spray that all over my face every morning?

Are you going to use this on your face? Let us know how that goes. The Cetaphil sunblock paints my face pretty white, which mixed with the "tane burn" looks strange.

Please read my Accutane log. Feel free to visit my website as well.

Yeah I don't want to look strange either, I ordered this one off Amazon, i'll post here how it works.  it looks easy because you just spray it on instead of rubbing it all evenly.

CeraVe makes one with a SPF 30 in the moisturizer. It's called CeraVe AM.. Works really nicely doesn't make you shiny like most spas do!

Yeah only use moisturizer and gentle cleanser! Nothing else! U will only hurt your skin and accutane can do it all anyways. I should try crave sometime. It seems like people use it a lot.

I would not use that neutrogena spray on your face, it's a chemical sunscreen and it seals to the skin like glue, also it's loaded with alcohol which will irritate your skin.

Day 68

I cancelled my order for that spray sunscreen.  When I'm in the sun for a long time I just use the Neutrogina SPF 30 moisturizer.  I don't wear it ALL the time though, like to walk from my car, driving, standing next to a window, etc.

I'm posting less frequently... Accutane's just doing its thing.  I filled more of it last week so my drawer is just overflowing with boxes of accutane and little pregnant woman popouts.  :)

some people have been on 5 or 6 courses.

#1.critical nutritional issues- b12(three forms exist), Calcium(yogurt, cheese or calcium phosphate supps) and vitamin d(sun or supps not to exceed 1000 iu). heme iron-most absorbable from meat only, clams are high. these are the most difficult vitamins to get and absorb. All others or about the same in difficulty in absorption. MAgnesium in our food supply is generally low as well, try natural calm supps.
#2 Fats- monounsaturated should dominate(olives), followed by polyunsaturated plant sources(nuts) but not if you have acne. the health benefits of fish oil and fish are controversial and i dont consume them due to mercury contamination and immune supression avoid processed fats if possible.
#3 Protein/amino acids- dairy and eggs best sources for tryptophan and methionine which convert to powerful antioxidants melatonin and glutathione.
#4 Carotenoids- alpha- beta carotene, beta cryptoxanthin, lutein zeaxanthin, astaxanthin. these are vital to human nutrition, carrots, butternut squash, pumpkin, chili pepper and cayenne pepper are the best sources.
#5 Regularity-BM at least once a day, Moist, large stools, 1 piece ideal, no maldigestion, no floating stools indicative of maldigested fat. HOW- insoluble fiber- wheat and cooked vegetables. soluble fiber-oats/ good bacteria ferment soluble fiber making short chain fatty acids that inhibit pathogens.
#6 Circadian cycles-Light, get up with the sun, and expose your entire body to it. darkness-melatonin is released upon the sensing of absolute darkness. sleep in a pitch black room, try to ensure 10 hours total darkness, wear sunglasses before bed. do not eat too late at night.
#7 Desirable physiological states(positive moods/emotions) do precisely what you like and what feels good to you, but not regardless of consequences, just from a perspective that, you own your life, and can determine precisely what you do with it and need not answer or ask of permission from anyone, achieving maximum autonomy and self government.

Is 5 or 6 courses healthy?  I keep thinking each course is going to give me a longer 2-3 year period of being clear.  I'll spend 6 months doing this, but be good for about 2 years anyway.

Good to hear that it's working well for you! I just started my second course. I went through the exact same thing, my first course cleared my skin up COMPLETELY! I looked great! But after about 2 years it's come back! I've heard a lot of people says that their acne comes back after 2 years... strange!

Day 77

Could it be that I made it past the IB?  I hope so.  I've been at this 80mg/day dose for a while now, and it's not getting worse.  It's actually getting a little better.  I have a few nasty, hostile spots/clusters, but I used to have many of those, and most of my skin looks clearer.

Still redness and easy sunburn.

Dryness, esp. lips.

Finished the Keflex, and now i'm getting new cysts on my body.  I guess I'll go back to the bleach baths for now, but I like the way that Keflex cleared me up.  I might call and ask for another 10 days of that.

Any experience from anyone else using Keflex or similar during accutane?

Ouch!  Today I woke up, my mouth is so dry and sore on one corner it hurts to open my mouth.

Been applying aquaphor, no help.  Applied some Desonide my derm gave me for ezcema, hoping that will help.

Also only took 1 x 40mg pill today instead of 2.

Day 78

Here's a current picture, mostly of my lips.  Notice that crater looking thing on left corner of my mouth.  It hurts!
