I started working out and taking creating/calorie shakes a few months ago. I gained about 15 pounds of muscle and fat. I've never been this heavy before because I been skinny my whole life and it was pretty hard work getting up to that weight.

The past month I started breaking out. The past 3 weeks has been horrific.

The doctor put me on minocycline 50mg (i upped it to 2x50mg a day because it wasnt working) and Retin-A-micro cream. My acne has gotten worse. I'm talking about zits stacking next and on top of each other. They feel huge and deep.

This is affecting me bad because I work in sales and I have contact with customers. I am also a college graduate that is job searching. This is a huge hit to my physical presentation especially in interviews. Kind of hurts my confidence and my desire to socialize.

What should I do acne.org? I've taken accurate in the past and it is a really powerful drug that damaged my internal body a little in the past. I want to avoid it if possible.

Other things I've tried in the past that didn't really work are differin, clindoxyl, over counter drugs, retin-A, minocycline. I talked to my doctor about seeing a dermatologist and he told me that the wait time is about a year to 2 years. I have also stopped working out and taking extra supplements like creatine.

Sorry for the picture taken from my phone.

Hey,

Your acne looks so similar to mine it's insane. It's even in the same spot. I had acne in my teens and got it under control with natural remedies and birth control. A few years later it came back and it was so bad I went to the doctor. She prescribed me my old birth control and doxycycline. The doxy is just kicking in now after two months, antibiotics take a long while to work. I have considered seeing a derm, but if I did they would just send me off with another antibiotic or a cream that won't work.

I'm thinking that gaining muscle has turned your testosterone wild and your acne is back. Testosterone in big doses effects your sebum supply. If you can give your body time to work with the antibiotic, if not try the regimen. I am taking doxy, the pill for acne, doing the regimen and taking extra supplements and it's only taken a month for my skin to become 70 - 80% clear. I understand your anxiety about what people think, I still feel that and made the mistake of slathering my face in make up. There are plenty of members here than can support you, including myself.

when i took doxy and mino it took a while to work but this time my derm gave me keflex and that started working in 3 days and i had no more cystic acne. that stuff is amazing! i also use proactiv toner that has witch hazel and glycolic acid in it so that helps to keep the pores clean as well.

Keep on working out but ditch the shakes.  Agree that you may want to address diet (esp milk) and of course, try The Regimen since you can't see a derm anytime soon.

I am not an advocate of antibiotics but try it out with The Regimen and see how that works out.

Good Luck man!  You're in good company

I've been on something similar to the regimen. It worked before but my acne was mild then.

I've been using clindoxyl which is mainly benzoyl peroxide. Since high school and it doesn't really do anything at all.

I am going to ask the doctor what other options I have that will produce similar results to accutane. I will go on a low dose of accutane if I have to.

My jawline is full of whiteheads now and I do not want to pop them. It doesn't really affect my confidence. But it hurts a lil when rubbed against. And it makes me grumpy, not sure if it is the medication or not.

I know how you feel with the whiteheads and the pain. I was in tears for days at my worst, not only because it wrecked my confidence but it hurt to even go to sleep at night!!! Good idea going back to the doctor, be warned though sometimes they prescribe a quick fix.. and remember to give a product 3 months to work before ditching it. Stick to something and you will see results.

I noticed the days after I workout my acne underneath my jaw and neck get really inflamed like fuckin quarter size. Even if I just do a couple of reps WTF? When I don't touch weights or workout of any kind the acne on my jaw/neck is gone. Any shakes will make my entire face erupt, definently try to stay away from them. I wonder how this could be fixed.

I don't know if this will help but I thought it'd be worth building upon Cassie Reannan's comment. There are articles that say weightlifting and body building can theoretically stimulate DHT. Some suggest that testosterone can rise up to 25% after a 45 minute session of weight lifting. The extra free testosterone is coverted into DHT. DHT can then contribute to acne and other things like baldness. However, I'm sure there are other factors

Just curious, do you break out with non-weight training exercise? Like running or pilates?

please dont rub or in fact, touch them.

let them be...am sure its hard but u know what..u come across as one very confident guy who's not bothered by these.

keep that up.

i'd suggest a low% bha wash and low pwer accutane.a simple 1%(or even less) salicylic acid face wash helps.

but before than trying azithromycin would be a great bet for its got almost no big side effects unlike accutane.

That makes sence, no when I play basketball or go running it has no effect. Weight training I can tell only effects my acne on my jaw/neck not the acne on my cheeks or temples. So I guess acne prone people should not lift weights? Is there a way for DHT not to effect acne.

Thanks for replying. That doesn't suprise me. It could be that the acne on your jaw and neck are more sensitive to the raise in testosterone. Along with my upper back, those two areas are also the places I break out most and I am absolutely positive that my acne is hormone related as I have had huge success with hormonal treatments.

I don't think there is any way to make DHT act in a different way than it does. All I know is that you can lower your DHT and androgen levels through a variety of methods. Along with a healthy diet, there are natural supplements, vitamins, and pharmaceutical methods to lower DHT. There are also foods that you can eat that naturally help inhibit the 5α-reductase metabolism. If anyone is interested I can come up with a list.

Yes my upper back and shoulder I noticed breaks out with weights, there has to be some connection like you said

If you could give a list it would be greatly appreciated, thanks for the insight.

Ditch the creatine and whey protein. As much as I'd love taking those to build muscle quicker, they break me out like crazy.

Do a search on how these effect acne. Just drop them both completely. Your gains will slow, but acne should start going away if these are what is breaking you out. Just simply weight lifting shouldn't be breaking you out...it's healthy.

Argh I hate stubborn acne! Everyone has listed some great suggestions and Cassie is spot on with the hormones.

I used to get cystic acne on my chin in my teen years, i'd get a hot wash cloth and hold that against the affected skin with slight pressure (like a compress). It provides some relief and helps draw the gunk out. I'd just do it til my skin felt a bit better. You could probably try ice after that too.

Anyway I don't know about you but I always hated showering at the gym so i'd walk home and shower. I was getting zits until I decided to bring face wipes to the gym and wipe down my face and shoulders immediately after working out. Solved the problem til I could get home to shower properly :)

Hey guys. Thanks for discussing in my thread.

For those of you who are still suffering from cystic acne...I strongly recommend trying Accutane if you havent yet. I dont know about you guys. But for me, NOTHING else works. Nothing has worked in the past either other than Accutane. My acne cleared up literally within 2 weeks. All the huge cysts deep under my skin just vanished and my face doesnt feel greasy ever anymore. Before my face would get greasy within 30 minutes of cleansing and moisturizing. After using Accutane for a bit, I dont feel greasy at all through out the day. I can wash 2 times a day now as opposed to 3.

Now i know Accutane is a strong product and that it may have negative side effects. But if you follow these precautions that I will give you. You should be fine.

First off. Your dose does not have to be that strong. Look at my picture. I only used 20mg a day and it worked amazing. I know people who were put on high doses (like 80-100+mg) for long periods of times because their doctor didnt know what the fuck they were doing. They were on it for long periods of times (Over a year), and it really messed their health up (I know someone that got IBS, Irritable Bowel Syndrome).

Second, make sure you get blood tested regularily. As soon as you begin taking Accutane, and every month while your on it. Make sure you get reports from your doctor to see if your okay.

Thirdly, some doctors are fucking useless. I had one prescribe me shit that was completely irrelevant to my problem, and it made my acne worse. Not only did he not test my blood to see if there was something wrong with my body. But, he has no idea wtf he was doing. So I went to see other doctors for help. Luckily I went back to my old family doctor, who is experienced, genuinely cares, and is not a dumbass. On that note, do your own research, don't just follow your doctor's directions blindly. (Request blood tests and question dosage.)

For those of you wondering what I was put on..

20mg Accutane/day

Morning cleanse then apply differin. Let it dry, then apply Clindamycin.

After noon cleanse then apply clindamycin.

Bedtime cleanse then apply Benzoyl Peroxide.

Of course moisturze and SPF if needed.

Now I am trying to get rid of all the marks.

yes,i am curious as well.

Workouts and other extreme physical activity can also increase inflammation and inflammatory response.  And the DHT thing isn't theoretical.
