My Poor Face... Help Please?

4 posts in this topic

I was finally able to find a derm who accepted my insurance, so I made an appointment. Last Thursday I saw the doc, and given my previous history, what's currently going on, etc. she has me on the following regimen:

  • Cleocin-T pads (clyndamycin phosphate 1%) twice a day
  • 4% Hq twice a day on spots only
  • 0.05% Tretinoin nightly (I've been on this off and on for about 2 yrs)
  • Benzoyl Peroxide 5% cleanser once a day

This upcoming Thursday I have my first chemical peel (they're not sure which version until I'm in their office for the Certified Laser Technician to see my skin, and blue light therapy. My cousin, who is an esthetician, says everything sounds okay to her.

The problem I'm having is that my face is now an itchy, dry, peeling, flaky mess! It's very sensitive in the areas where I'm flaking the most (along the nose & mouth). Nothing I use seems hydrating enough, and the face lotion with SPF I have been using causes a grey cast on my naturally tan skin.

What I really need is a very, very moisturizing/hydrating facial lotion. I have a different SPF I can use, but it's definitely not a hydrating one. I put in a call to my derm, but when she called me back and left a message, I could tell the message I left with the nurse was definitely NOT relayed correctly. Hopefully we connect on Monday so I can ask questions. In the mean time, any recommendations are truly appreciated. Thanks so much!!!

Hello! Congrats on finding a derm who accepts your insurance!

I use Olay Complete All Day Moisturizer (Active Ingredients Octinoxate 6.0%, Zinc Oxide 3.0%) mixed with Jojoba oil - it is the recommended moisturizer of Acne.org's The Regimen. I've had luck with this - just don't be shy with amount, like slather it on face, neck, get to the ears and jawline and everything. I got my Jojoba oil at Whole Foods, but I think they sell it at Walgreens and maybe other drug store chains as well.

I've also used many types of Aveeno moisturizers in the past, and have found that brand to be really nourishing - just use a good sized amount!

Good luck.

CeraVe moisturizer. Sooo nice. Has cholesterol (for cell membranes), ceramides (for cell proliferation, and membranes), hyaluronic acid (extracellular matrix component), and a bunch of other stuff! And it doesn't make my face oily and weird, it just sinks in and then is gone
