I know you said you had a ton of clogged pores previously and was wondering if you still get new ones? The ones I have are definitely clearing up at a much faster rate now than the new ones are appearing but I still get a few new ones every week even with the retin a, SA and Spiro (although it has only been 4 week on that). Do you think the Retin a and Spiro will eventually stop all of them, or are those of us who get closed comedones forever doomed to get them?
I answered this question for you privately, but I thought it might benefit other people to read the answer so I'm posting on the forum too:
I am about to start my 21st week on spiro tomorrow and I can say that the clogged pores have dramatically reduced! I had so many before and all of those had to come out one way or another. I took it into my own hands to get facials every few weeks to do extractions and that made a big difference between having a breakout and not having one. Usually every single clogged pore would turn into a major scary zit, but the facials stopped those in their tracks. Awesome.
Right now I can literally count the number of clogged pores on my face with one hand. I don't feel I'm getting any new ones, or if I am, it's very rare. Spiro has once again been a blessing for me. I'll post my updated pics soon.
Here are a couple practical tips for you:
- Get regular facials with extractions! I can't tell you how much of a difference this has made for me.
- Consider either a gentle peel (salicylic acid really helped me) and/or microdermabrasion. Both will help with the clogged pore situation. But since you are on retin a, you will have to stop using that topical a week in advance and several days after you have the peel or micro.
We aren't doomed to get those clogged pores forever!! Keep the faith, girl! Patience has been the most difficult part of this journey, but learning it has been a blessing that has shined on so many other aspects of my life.
So, thought I would update my log. I haven't posted for a while on here, since I kind of just wanted to wait and take a break, plus I was finding it confusing with everyones different stories and trying to keep up with everyone, although, I am grateful for people chiming in ofcourse.
I am just going to focus on what my log is all about, and it was about my Spiro journey, but now I guess its about MY journey..So I will still keep it running.
Okay well, I have been OFF Spiro for about 3 weeks I think now or something like that. And I am so friggin' happy about it. It was probably the right decision to make, but we can see if things change from here on out - which I doubt.
I encourage those on this drug to keep going. Keep on keeping on. If its working for you that is, it just wasn't working for me, I did not like the side effects...and let me tell you I feel better with my weight, a little anyway...I think I may have lost a few lbs (I ain't weighed in yet so we will see) I also sleep better, and enjoy excercise again since I don't get BREATHLESS all the time. I am still urinating frequently though and my hair is still a little loose and falling out.
The only major thing thats kind of stayed is this pain I keep getting in my stomache, its on my lower lefts side and when I press on it its very sore, my digestive system has been warped since being on Spiro and it still is, I am unbelievable consipated and I think thats leading to this pain too...so its something I will get checked out.
Im glad Im off it though, hope everyone else is doing well.
Currently my routine right now is just eating a good diet, excersising frequently (3-4 times per week) taking NO supplements, just starting "a-new" so-to-speak. I am also using a BHA for my skin to see if it will help with the bumpy-ness.
My current state of skin is not worse or significantly better...but I feel better and thats the main thing right?
I am so grateful to you for starting this spiro log and sharing your story - the ups and downs of it. I've been absent from the forum for a few weeks so I missed the spiro drama, but it sounds like it was really doing a number on you. Really happy you had the foresight to quit while you were ahead.
Medicine is...well...tricky. There will always be a side effect, big or small. I still have faith that you will find your answer. Now that you have a clean slate, you can flush your body out and really nourish yourself (mind, body and spirit).
My only suggestion is that you don't give up trying to figure out exactly why the symptom of acne is showing up. What is out of balance in your body? Honestly, it may take both time and money to get to the bottom of this very big question, and those are two things I know most of us have very little of. But, finding the root cause is key so you aren't continuing to shoot in the dark and getting frustrated in the process.
I am really proud of you for you courage in sharing your story, and I do hope you continue to blog and update us on your journey. You may not realize it, but there are so many people (myself included) who have been deeply impacted by reading about your journey. This forum honestly helped me keep my sanity
I'll post my own update soon. Tomorrow marks 21 weeks (the beginning of month 6) on spiro. Things are continuing to look up for me. My week 20 photos will be up soon
