Studies On Lower Cumulative Doses

7 posts in this topic

I have been doing a lot of researching and reading medical studies .... one study showed success in 93% of the 618 people with cumulative doses as low as 65mg/kg ! has anyone else heard anything like this ? my family Dr said that 100-150 are the norms... I see on the board here most people say 120-150

Any thoughts? articles ?

There are some articles in the Acne research part of this forum. Myself I read one which was written/done by researchers in Israel, where they used a low dose. About 20mg/day I think and the total accumulative dose was significantly lower than "normal" doses. And they had good success with it, many never experienced acne again and the side effects were lower. However, when I asked my GP about this (he's very very well educated) he meant that if you should take accutane, you should have high("normal") dosage.

That's the best I can help you

Thank you very much for the reply ! I went on accutane because my pores were very clogged and had a few spots .... I had never had a cyst etc .... my dr want to stop me at what works out to 92mg/kg even though I am not clear. He feels I will clear up once I go off and says that is a normal effect.

If that's the case I'd listen to your derm, even though I don't really trust mine : d

Here are some study summaries and links to actual studies on low does accutane (PubMed is great for finding medical studies. If you are in university/live near one, they may have resources to let you read those studies for free. Some are already free)

An article with general summaries of low dose studies: http://www.facingacne.com/accutane-necessarily/

Meta study abstract on accutane, includes low dose info: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23013115

Low-dose isotretinoin in acne vulgaris: a critical review. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21623757

Oral isotretinoin in different dose regimens for acne vulgaris: a randomized comparative trial. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22016276

Treatment of severe acne with low-dose isotretinoin. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22377969

Effectiveness of conventional, low-dose and intermittent oral isotretinoin in the treatment of acne: a randomized, controlled comparative study: comment. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21410669

The general consensus seems to be that there is merit to the use of low dose Accutane.

I didn't see anything specific on stopping treatment before being completely clear, but in my personal experience, my skin continued to improve after my first round of Accutane.

I'm currently on my 5th month of tane, I was on a relatively low dose for a while and by now my cumalative dosage is probably somewhere near 65mg/kg, and I'm still breaking out. My derm won't up my dose, it's stupid, to be honest I've started taking more on my own...but yeah I started losing faith in low dose (<0.5mg/kg) somewhere around my 4th month.

oh man my face was a nightmare around 65mg/kg ! if you check my blog that would have been about day 85 ... it has gotten a lot better lately... I hit where my derm wants me to end on the 16th ... I am going in on the 14th to ask for 2 more months so that I can hit at least the 120mg/kg that everyone here seems to say is the minimum cumulative dose to stay clear!
