Hi everyone!
I've been lurking around this forum for a while now so I decided to join in and share my experience with you.
My story: i'm 21, I've had acne for 10 years.
I've been on all kinds of medications and creams and gels ... and doctors. (Actually, if you check Wikipedia's article on Acne vulgaris and scroll down to the bottom of the page, where it says "Acne-treating agents", well I've been on most of the things mentioned: Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic acid, Tetracyclines, Clindamycin...)
My first derm was absolutely reluctant to give me Accutane ("you are very young!"). She treated me with the things I mentioned before.
These things worked to a greater or lesser extent, but none of them cured me completely. I'd post pictures of me 10 years ago and now, but i'm too embarrased to do it. Maybe in the future when I look better I will
At the time I also visited my endocrinologist regularly. She gave me birth control pills, which worked a bit at first but then did absolutely nothing. I was on them for like 3-4 years. Some waste of time/money!
(I should also mention that I have problems with my period. If it weren't for the birth control pills I wouldn't have had any when I was young. Now my new endocrinologist prescribed me Thyroxine because I've got mild hypothyroidism. My period is back!)

Back to my acne: it basically consists of some cysts that come and go, many red marks, and pits.
I've also got on my chest and back, and even some on my arms.

So basically about a few months ago I changed my dermatologist. At first she was also reluctant to give me Accutane but one day she saw me and (apparently) I didn't look too well so she said "Have I ever mentioned Accutane?" and I was like "are you f****** kidding me? i've been wanting it for ages" :/

To sum it up: I've got an appointment next week and I will start treatment with Accutane! hifive.gif
I honestly can't wait til then! Acne has made my life so miserable!

EDIT: i'm done with the treatmeant! These were my side effects:

  • Less tolerant to people
  • Initial Breakout that lasted for... 2 weeks
  • Dry lips, dry hair, dry eyes (needed eye drops and lip balm all the time)
  • Super sensitive skin... Mosquito bites gave me bumps, scratching and tweezing produced redness, etc.
  • My eyesight worsened, couldn't see very well from afar
  • Red marks and scars haven't completely disappeared
  • Snotty nose
  • Muscles ached if I stood still for a long period of time
  • My period disappeared
  • The back of my head sometimes felt like it was beating, so weird
  • Very bad hair loss (handful of hair gone every time I combed)
  • Overall tiredness

And after the treatment:

  • Hypersalivation it was related to something else
  • 1 year after: breakouts again!!! see last post :/

A week before starting Accutane.

I think my biggest problem are my huge pores, I am really hoping Accutane will help me fight these Posted Image
My second problem are the red marks.

Opinions?

My derm told me to take one pill a day (20 mg.) for one week and if I didn't get massive breakouts I should bump to two pills a day.

Day 1:

I've taken one pill so far, nothing has happened apart from the fact that my lips are *slightly* dry and I have some unusual back pain that comes and goes.
The medicine's leaflet is unlike everything I've ever seen. It's huge!

lila, do you only have this on your face, and not your body? I don't think accutane is a good idea for your very mild acne. Just my opinion though, good luck

Hey, thanks for your post.
I've got on my face, back, chest, shoulders, arms, tummy... Posted Image
I used to be a lot worse than now, but the red marks are still there. I get some ocassional zits though (as in, two or three per week). And my skin is really oily... nothing like it used to be, but I have to wash my hair at least every two days or it gets really ugly.

Day 2:
Nothing new, lips are slightly dry and got some back pain. So far so good!

Day 4:
My lips are not dry anymore and my back pains are gone. However there are 4 new zits on my upper lip, 1 on my chin, and 2 on my right cheek Posted Image

PS: after taking a shower my face looks like a dry tomato... is this normal?

Hey,

What other products are you using for facewash, moisturizer, lips, etc? Using the right products can help eliminate irritation which is causing your redness

Started Clavaris 5/21/2012 for chin cysts and cystic acne on my back. I'm a 21yr old male with sensitive combination skin (extremely oily t-zone). Been on antibiotics for 18 months and remained fairly clear on my face but my back is still breaking out, and the antibiotic is losing affetiveness on face.

Month 1: 50 mg/day 5/21/2012
Month 2: 50 mg/day
Month 3: 60 mg/day
Month 4: 60 mg/day
Month 5: 60 mg/day
Month 6: 60 mg/day
FINISHED: 150 mg/kg

Routine: AM: - Acne.org cleanser

- DML Mousturizer
- Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar
- Aquaphor on lips
- Cerave AM Mousturizer SPF 30 (when outside)

PM: - Acne.org cleanswer
- DML Mousturizer
- Aquaphor for lips
- Gillette Sensor excel w/ Acne.org Cleanser

Other: - No dairy(for digestive reasons and acne)
- Good, balanced diet (limited fried food and sugar)
- Heavy weight training 5x per week
- Fish Oil, Calcium, and Multivitamin Supplements

I use a facial moisturizer.
Actually before going on Accutane I got a reddish face after showers, but not as much as now.

What moisturizer are you using by any chance? They are all pretty different and a poor quality one could be contributing to your ance. Most accutane patients use a gentle non-medicated facewash twice a day and moisturize twice a day, but the product itself can be all the difference

I'm using Ponds, no idea if it is right for me.

It's not painful any more Posted Image

Day 6:
My face is a lot drier than usual, not as oily and glossy as before Posted Image I haven't had any other issues other than this and the minor breakout. No dry lips or back pains, nothing. I wonder what's gonna happen next week when I go from 20 mg/day to 40 mg/day.

A week after the 1st pill!
Hooray!

My lips are sliiiightly dry and my skin is flaky. I've taken my 7th pill about 3 hours ago, and as I type this I can actually feel as if something is moving under my lips. I think this is because I've got 3 4 new zits there. It's kind of a burning sensation.

Iila, thanks for sharing your day to day experiences! I may be starting a course in a few weeks so this helps me gauge what to expect.

It's a rocky road but like everything else in life, there is always a beginning and an end.  Here's to finding my end.

God is good to me..........more than I deserve.

James 1:2-4

Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Hey, you're welcome :)

Day 9:
Today hasn't been very good, my jaw looks inflamed and feels inflamed, and my right cheek has two huge zits.

Hey,

I'm not sure which ponds cream your using, but I would definitely ditch the ponds cream and get a good facial moisturizer that isn't greasy, and that is non-comedogenic. I would personally recommend CeraVe moisturizer, but Cetaphil is probably the most popular for acne patients on this board. The ponds cream alone could be messing with your acne... I'm sure many people here would agree

Hmmm ... well tomorrow I'm going to visit my derm, I'll ask her to recommend me a good moisturiser.

Day 10:
It's shocking how fast pimples come and go. Yesterday I had some nasty pus-filled pimples, and when I woke up today the pus was gone.
Now I have a new pimple on my bottom lip (you can imagine how annoying that is!) and another one right under it (both with pus -.-)

Also, I'm not sure about this, but I think my body is expelling the blackheads! I had loads on my chin and today I saw like tiny things coming out of my skin =)

I still don't see any improvement or change on my chest or back.

Day 12:
I woke up today with some back pain. My lips are a bit dry, nothing too serious though.
All the area aroud my mouth is breaking out. I wonder whether this is the inital IB? How long will it last? Does it depend on the severity of the acne? (more severe -> longer IB?)

Day 13:
My chin is less inflamed. My right cheek is more inflamed. New pimple on my neck, which is odd because I never ever had one on my neck. Posted Image

Yesterday I was out in the sun for literally 20 minutes and I forgot to apply sun screen. Guess what? I got home to find my nose was reeeeeeeeeeeeed Posted Image
