Its doubtful you have one root cause. The body is a system with all kinds of processes going on that affect each other. But the root causes of acne are hormones and inflammation. There are many ways your diet and lifestyle affect both.

Anyway, my skin cleared completely in less than 2 months from the day I drank my last soda and began improving my diet to avoid high gylcemic load meals/drinks/snacks and incorporating more nutrient dense foods. But years earlier I had identified a food intolerance that caused the worst of my acne - severe cystic acne.

Topicals/soaps/washing my face and depleting my acid mantle

Had severe acne until I was 18 or so (on and off until I was 21)...restored my acid mantle which got rid of my acne and have been clear since

DHT and other sex hormones also cause issues for me

the first poster is wrong, its not doubtful that one thing is causing your acne...if one thing gets out of control it can effect other things, once corrected everything should stabilize, which is found in my situation.

Grains/Dairy/Sugar
2 years.

Not sure how much longer I could have survived if I didn't find the source problem.

I just had a delicious tomato soup and 2 sandwiches today during a vacation, I'll see what happens tomorrow. Probably nothing since, I kept the GI impact low.

Only thing that worked for me was spiro, which is an anti-androgen, so I'll say my root cause was excess androgen or DHT activity.

I noticed a slight reduction from taking dairy out of my diet, but dairy plays into the androgen activity as well anyway.

^so does sugar or any other high glycemic food/meal. The androgen/DHT issue applies to most every one that found that sugar was their problem. Balancing hormones and reducing inflammation are what we are trying to accomplish with our diet changes. High glycemic diets stimulate excess hormone production as well as chronic silent inflammation.

Foods I'm intolerant to, i.e. corn, soy, and wheat. Sugar. And skin picking/making extractions, which is the last frontier for me to conquer. 7 years.

DHT and milk, took me about 4 years to find.
When I stop masturbation and drinking milk (or products based on milk) my acne becomes better (not clear, but absolutely better).

Sugar /dairy & gluten although I can tolerate eating either of these occasionally w/o consequences.

Over many years with incremental improvements. Firstly avoided gluten which showed some improvements and then when I began avoiding sugar, essentially following a low GI diet, this has helped keep me clear. Definitely no lotions or potions have been effective, though some plant based-products have helped calm and soothe my skin, and mercifully I never tried Roaccutane - I just knew this wouldn't work for me.

Root cause was food sensitives to dairy and sugar. It took me more then 10 years to realize diet and acne are related for my case.

It took me 5 years, but I finally found that a low GI diet keeps me clear.

And did everyone who found diet changes cleared them post to the success thread? It's there to help people.

It would be interesting to see a graph of what cleared everyone from this thread and the Success Thread. I would imagine certain things would be far more prevalent than others. For anyone still searching, they may want to try the most common ones first.

Is there the option to insert like a one-click survey in this forum? This would be interesting...
