This bored has some great dietary advice but as we all know, dietary changes take time to affect skin. Some people are lucky to get results in days, for others, it could be months/years. In the meantime, the acne continues. What can i uses to contain/reduce the acne that i do get? I don't want to use topicals like BP or dermatologist based stuff - i've already gone down that path and it doesn't work for me. My acne ranges from individual inflamed and under the skin pimples, to tiny flesh colored pimples that are all over. All suggestions are appreciated.

So you don't want to use any man-made topicals?

Don't aggravate anything with harsh soaps ant toners. Or BP. You could try a mild bha topicel. Other soothing things like green tea and aloe Vera.

And if you are following an anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle, what pimples you get should be smaller, less inflamed and heal faster.

I tried that route for several months using various topicals - it never worked for me.

Can you suggest some products? Also how would i use green tea. I spot tested the aloe and had a bad reaction so i cant use it on my face.

Use Epsom Salt (Magnesium Sulfate). It is far better than any man-made topical I have ever used. It is actually on par with accutane in effectiveness.

It will bring all the cysts and pimples to the surface within a couple of days and will heal them just as quickly.

I cannot praise Epsom Salt enough, it is truly a wondrous topical for acne.

Very skeptical about your claim. Will this further irritate my skin - i already have inflammed and under the skin pimples. How would i use it. I already have a cleanser and a toner - this is needed to calm my active acne down....looking forward to your response

Yes, you will experience an initial breakout, just like accutane. Any acne beneath your skin will brought to the surface and quickly healed. In the past epsom salt was used as the main ingredient in "drawing salves". These are basically creams that rapidly eject imperfections from the skin (splinters, bee stings, boils, pimples, cysts, blackheads, etc)

How would i use it. I already have a cleanser and a toner - this is needed to calm my active acne down....looking forward to your response

In my first post I linked for your convenience another topic which lists suggestions for using Epsom salt and water as a mask, cleanser, exfoliator, bath salt, or anything else which would maximize absorption of magnesium sulfate into your acne prone areas. It's as simple as diluting Epsom salt into water and letting it absorb into your skin.

Good luck Posted Image

you dont want to use any man made topicals, then dont expect much results.... and diet changes wont take years to show results.

if you want you can try nizoral shampoo [topical anti DHT] that will decrease the sebum production thus acne.
but if nizoral is too harsh to your opinion then.....

why is BP so bad? it kills my pimples like magic

I mix non-iodized sea salt and filtered water in a bowl, dab a cotton ball in it and put it on my inflamed spots. It really helps to dry out the pustules and whiteheads quickly, it doesn't get rid of cysts unfortunately, but it helps some red bumps come to a head and it shortens the life of most pimples. It doesn't prevent acne or fade away red marks, but it does get rid of some of them a lot quicker. Just make sure you use a LOT of salt, like it should be very very salty just like the ocean. I usually do this twice a day.

In my original post i stated that i HAVE USED chemical stuff and my face is worse off so now i am ready to try natural. BP is not for everyone and it is certainly not for me. I have had dietary changes in place for MONTHS so obviously there are other things missing from this puzzle....in the meantime, gotta try different things.

Thanks for the inout

if you dont see any change in a month, your strategy isnt working.
its possible to see changes within one day.
avoid the, "initial breakout" myth, its not how everything works all the time, for ever and ever, likely if you have an initial breakout, what you are doing isnt working.

Nothing can be definitively stated as everyone's body is different so not everyone will see changes in one day. But i agree with you that if i am doing something over several months and no change, maybe something needs to be adjusted. I am getting some guidance from a holistic dr so we'll see how things work out.

Thanks for the input

The Epsom salts are a great suggestion. If you like baths, definitely add Epsom salts. It's magnesium sulfate. Both of which are great for skin and healing.

I use brewed green tea to dilute ACV when I make a toner. It's great to restore ph after cleansing, especially if you use a cleanser. Essential if you use soap or baking soda.

What is your acne like? Has there been any change? And what is your diet?

Well i got off Acanya about three week ago and previous to that, i was using Ziana and Atralin since November. My acne today is

many whiteheads popping up on my chin (my biggest problem area)
non inflamed acne on chin and jawline (very recent issue)
red bumps with no head on my cheeks
non inflamed bumps on forehead (not too bad)

I break out everyday.

My diet is in my signature but its basically paleoish (i sometimes do white potatoes, brown rice and quinoa). My holistic doctor thinks yeast might be an issue so he had me stop eating sweet potatoes. I do organic as much as i can. I have not noticed any noticeable change in my acne since i started my dietary changes (January - no dairy/gluten) but then again i was also on topicals. Now that i am off topicals, i'm hoping to see if changes occur. I know in my hear though that i have not solved my puzzle and i am trying not to get frustrated.

I exercise and try to stay stress free as much as i can.

I've been using ACV as a toner for almost 3 weeks and an organic cleanser with little to no chemicals. I bought some Epsom Salts so i will use it in my bath and use it as a paste on my face (epsom and water) tonight.

Do i do this every night?

What ratio of salt to water?

How long do i keep it on?

Thanks for the continued great advice Alternativista!

Thanks for pointing out the obvious. If i knew the answer i would jump on it. I'm working with someone who can give me some actual direction as what to try next so it's a wait and see game i guess.

If gluten or the other things you are avoiding were directly causing your acne (allergy/intolerance) then you would be seeing changes by now. This of course isn't to say that you are not still intolerant to those things. Plenty of people are gluten intolerant who have no skin conditions. So I'm not advising you to eat them again or anything, most of what you have given up isn't anything you need anyway. But it's probably good to note that it likely isn't the main source of your acne.
