Accutane & Hope Log

55 posts in this topic

I have a bit of a picking problem too! I'm sure it will get harder as my skin starts to dry more.

Hope the back pain improves! Maybe some stretching or yoga first thing could help?

~bodyandsoul

Thanks! It does fade after I have been up for a while. I am keeping up with my exercise routine but notice I don't have quite the same flexibility and/or stamina.

Day 42.

Skin continues to improve!

I feel dreadfully tired all day, my back is little sore first thing in AM, belly feels bloated a lot, lips soooo dry but skin continues to improve....so, I can deal. I actually go whole chunks of my day now without thinking about my skin. Not picking = happy skin. When I remember that, all is well. If this is me @20/mg, why would I increase?!?

Day 51.

Yesterday at work, a coworker said to me "Your complexion looks lovely. I know you have been working hard on it and it shows. It's radiant." Whaaaaat??? Me? Those are words never used in connection with MY skin before.

So far I am tremendously happy with my results and very glad I finally gave it a go. I'd be remiss if I didn't add that I am having some pretty painful side effects (primary doc on Tuesday to follow up & then next derm appt on 8/9) but at this point the benefits still outweigh the negatives for me. That is what chronic, severe, 15+ years of cystic acne has done to me. Completely skewed my perspective of what is most important. My health or my skin. But, what can I say? I'm a few months from 40 and I don't want to have bumps all over my face that make people stare at me like I have some contagious condition. I tried the natural health approach. Went vegan, tried every alternative practitioner in my area. It didn't work for me. Accutane seems to have stopped the viscious cycle. It's not a coincidence. My instinct tells me to keep on it. We will see what the doctors think.

Summer, I love the comment from your coworker!

I would argue that your perspective of what's important is NOT skewed..... your skin is a huge part of your health! It's all connected! I too took the natural health approach and it hasn't worked for me. I feel comfortable starting accutane because I literally have tried everything else. You should too! Go with your gut and know in your heart that you ARE doing the best thing for you and your body!

Have you tried the Real Purity makeup yet??? I got my samples and so far I am really liking it!! I'm not sure I've figured out my best shade but I think this makeup will be just perfect to apply under some mineral powder. It feels super light and airy. The coverage isn't great, but of course I expected that and prefer light coverage at this point anyway to let my face breathe.

I received my samples just today at work, so I will be trying them tomorrow morning! I cannot wait. I really had no clue on the colors per the website, so I tried a bunch. The feel of it (tried a dab on my hand) was wonderful. I'm excited. And thank you, so much, for reframing what I wrote. You are right. I have to go with my gut and having done everything natural and getting no results, here I am trying the dreaded Accutane (reframe: Vit A) and it's working.....so. :)

I can't wait to hear what you think! I had to order one more sample yesterday...the light beige...I do find that this makeup is on the pink side - which I don't like for my already red face. The coverage is definitely light, but that's what I'm looking for at this point to allow my skin to breathe. I miss the look of my other makeup, but not the feel of it!

I'm thinking about trying this too: http://www.gabrielcosmeticsinc.com/index.cfm/product/12_9/gabriel-moisturizing-liquid-foundation.cfm

Whole Foods carries is and I can return it if I don't like it. I tried another foundation by that same brand (ZuZu) but I hated it. I wonder if this one is better.

I know what you mean about not needing to add pink to red! I tried the concealer, a couple colors of the powder and two colors of the foundation. Yesterday I didn't put anything all over my face, but rather spotted it and used powder to even out my complexion. It looked good but was very light. Today I tried the light beige and I did more of an all over and so we will see how it looks (too early for me to tell--too tired!). I do like the feel of it, a lot. I'll check out the other suggestion. Like that Whole Foods carries it and you can return it....:)

Day 56.

Saw my primary doc the other day. She is of course very concerned with some of my side effects but thrilled with my skin. She gave me a script to try to help one side effect (the belly stuff) and if it is no better in a week, I need an xray and she probably will not support me continuing further treatment. She feels I should not increase the dose if I do stay on it, given A) my results and B) my side effects. So, here is hoping that in a week I am doing a lot better because I see my dermatologist next Thursday! :)

Summer, I'm so sorry about your gut issues! I know that is so difficult and frustrating. Did you have any of those problems pre-accutane? I hope the prescription helps. Maybe once you "get things moving" with that, your good diet and water intake will keep things balanced.

Good luck!!

I did have issues (sometimes serious) but it was well managed for the last year through my diet and exercise. That is why it is so concerning - long history. Want to avoid going back there!!

Hi Summer, I just found your log...I'm 45 years old and starting accutane next thursday..the 30 day wait has been terrible..i have gone back and forth so much on taking it..i have been suffering from acne for 29 years, but was manageable for the most part till a couple of years ago..thats when it turned cystic which i had never had..devastated me! I would get a couple of cysts, big ones, would get them shot with cortisone and i would be fine for weeks...the past 5 months tho have been pretty bad..i just have been getting cyst after cyst..i get rid of one, another one pops up..its so hard to deal with, and gives me such anxiety..my derm had offered me accutane awhile back and i was like no wayyy, i was so scared of the stuff! after coming on here and reading all the logs it gave me the confidence to say yes..but as time is winding down, im getting terrified again..i'm scared bc of my age that it will be so tolling on my body..i am going to def do it..i actually just got back from derms office bc i needed cortisone shot, lol..i cant deal with this anymore..and it sucks bc my skin just doesnt heal like it used to...jeez 45 and suffering from acne SUCKS!! sorry im ranting but im happy to see someone close to my age is having success..i hope everything goes well with the derm and your side effects become manageable!! i will be following your log!

Hi Shadylee!

Oh...I can relate! Boy, can I relate. Here is what I can tell you. Waiting was awful. Too much time to imagine the worst and dread the experience. There are horror stories out there. I literally avoided them like the plague. I only read positive posts and tried to follow the logs of people I resonated with and were having good experiences. Trust your doctor. Trust yourself that having tried everything else, your body might really just need this to wipe out the cystic acne cycle. I tried to focus on my healing and started seeing my skin improving in my mind before I saw it in the mirror.

I completely understand what it feels like to be an older woman suffering with this. I actually had a "friend" say to me "It's just not right...at your age...you need to get that looked at." Um, okay. Thank you for that?!

I am being really conservative with my dose. I know the cumulative dose is important in terms of the "cure" but I do feel at my age, my body responds to medicine differently and I want to trust my body. I've had amazing results so far at 20, so I don't want to increase unless I have to, because I want to keep the side effects to a minimum. The side effects are real but most, if not all, are manageable.

Good luck with your journey! One day at a time. Focus on healing with this medicine. Write anytime and keep me posted. This is kinda silly but every time I take my pill I say something positive. I also take it at dinner time with food and a little fat. Take good care! :) Summer

Month 2 done. Month 3, here I come!

So, the bloodwork was fine. My derm wants to up my dosage (big surprise, eh?). I am SO nervous about this, given my side effects and my results. But, she is the specialist and I get the cumulative dose factor AND I do not want to have gone through all of this for nothing. So, beginning tomorrow - from 20->40. Depending on how month 3 goes at that dose, we may do the same again in a month.

Here is where I need to remind myself of the big picture. The end result. It's still a very low dose in reality. I just dread breaking from the status quo. It's all good though. That is why I come here...to read about other people's experiences and get that feeling of "I can do this." :)

I hear you Shadylee! Trying to calm the worries is a big part of this process for me. I truly believe my body responds better to the medicine when I am not worrying and when I believe it is healing my skin.

Good luck today! Think of today as the beginning of your clear skin journey rather than your accutane journey. Take it believing it will help you. You can manage whatever IB comes your way and the side effects, if you believe this will work for you. Keep me posted! :)

Summer, so happy you're able to continue taking accutane! I know your dosage increase will go fine. My bump from 40 to 60 has been uneventful so far!

Five days in to my doubled up dose. Noticing a rash all around my neck and collarbone. Very itchy and red. Could this be related? Is it something that will subside as I get used to this new dose? I hope so. :(

Summer I bet it's related to the dosage increase. Try to be patient as I think it will subside as your body adjusts. And drink more water!

Im 11 days into my dosage increase and I think its kicking up my breakouts. :/

Hang in there. Contact your Derm if your rash doesn't calm down.

Thank you! Besides an increase in breakouts, how has the dosage increase gone for you? Everything else about the same?

Nothing else new really....just seem to be going through a breakout phase again. How is your rash today? Make sure you moisturize it...that helped me when I started with rashes at the beginning of my course.

Rash = itchy & red. Called Derm - "it's probably eczema" - whaaaat? Never had that before in my life. Great. So she called in yet another script to combat that side effect. :(

I will moisturize. Thank you for the suggestion!

Feeling very down about this journey.

Current side effects in order of severity:

  • Extreme lethargy
  • Chronic constipation
  • Sore joints & back
  • Hair falling out (not noticable to the outside world but my bathroom floor needs daily sweeping!)
  • Lips - crack, hurt, constant peeling
  • New: eczema like rash on neck/collarbone
  • Random headaches
  • Dry hair
  • Red face

Oh my word. I need a reality check. I'm only in month 3. Can I put my body through 3 1/2 more months of this?

The good stuff:

My skin is about 95% clear. It hasn't been this clear in years. The breakouts I do get are "normal" - meaning, they are not gigantic bubble-like cysts under my skin on my chin that sit there for weeks and weeks on end. They pop up but heal relatively quickly. I can count on one hand the new breakouts that have appeared in the last month. YES! That is progress. This is what I signed on for.

Cost-Benefit Analysis. Is it worth it?

I think I need some outside perspective...

WORTH IT!!!!

That is my vote anyway! As for the eczema… I am using Eucerin Calming Cream

I use this in the AM and then again in the PM…. and then I put shea butter on my hands, feet, knees, and elbows. I am only 2 weeks into accutane but I am doing everything in my power to fight potential side affects before I get them. I was told this cream was great from my derm. So far so good.

Cracking Lips--- I read on another log that you could put generic hydrocortisone cream on your lips over night and it would pretty much cure them… then pile the aquifer on as much as possible. I bought myself a tube just in case I got a crack and didn't feel like running to the store.

Shadylee- I know waiting the 30 days sucks… I used the 30 days to start combating any potential side affects before even starting my first pill! I changed my supplements, started moisturizing, and piling on the aquifer- so far so good. I'm 31 and very very active- so I really am trying to avoid any side affects that will affect my active lifestyle.

Summer hang in there!!!! This could be the miracle cure you have been waiting on!

Oh Summer, so sorry you're having a tough time right now. Only you know your body but I think you can push through this. I really think that your body will adjust after being on the dosage increase for a little bit of time...then the side effects will calm down. Keep moisturizing and drinking lots of water!

I still love my lanolin for my lips - it may be worth a try!

You're going to have clear skin at the end of all of this and it's going to make you so confident and happy!
