I plan on putting it on an hour or two before prom and taking it off right after. How big of a chance is there that it'll break me out?

I never wear makeup, except mascara or eyeshadow sometimes. I have prom tomorrow though, so there's no way I'm going without makeup. I'm really scared to use it. My skin's been improving lately and I don't want to mess it up. I bought e.l.f. makeup since I'm vegan, so I won't use most of the brands that are good for acne, don't know how e.l.f. is for that.

Anything I can do to prevent a breakout?

You're more likely to get a breakout from the stress of worrying about whether or not your makeup for a single day is going to break you out. Even if it does break you out, which isn't likely, so what? Are you seriously worried that your makeup will break you out immediately after applying it? You should read more about how acne develops in the body, it's not an "instant" thing.
Just wear the makeup, go to prom and have a good time.

I would use a primer before putting any makeup on. This is something that you put on your entire face, BEFORE you put on any other makeup such as foundation, concealer, powder, etc.... i've heard that this acts as sort of a barrier between the skin and the makeup, so it may help. I wear makeup everyday though because if i didnt people would think they saw a monster when they saw me....so i wear primer. I really dont think that you'll really need it though if you're only wearing makeup for a few hours. So i honestly think you wont breakout, but if you want to use a primer just to be safe you can. The one i use that i really like is called: magic perfecting base: face primer, by loreal paris. I dont know if they sell this where you live in the world, but they very well might. I got it at: bed bath and beyond....again they may not have that store where you live but you can probably get this primer, or definitely A primer anywhere that sells makeup near you. The one im talking about comes in a rectangular black box, and has a few pink stripes on it. I hope this helps, good luck, and have fun at the prom!!!

Most primers are not noncomedogenic so I wouldn't waste the money if I were a girl such as yourself who doesn't normally wear makeup anyway. A waste of money if you don't usually wear makeup.
One night of makeup will cause little if any damage.
The best you can do is wear your typical acne cream underneath your makeup and moisturizer.
Have fun!
