Hello,

I had some quick questions pertaining to Accutane. Thanks in advance!

  • The first questions I have relates to the moisturizer I've been using (Eucerin Professional Repair), does anyone know if this is a plausible choice to use, and if it causes break outs to occur?
  • My dermatologist recommended for me to use "Aquaphor Healing Ointment" for my lips while on Accutane, however, after using it I sometimes will develop little pimples around my lips, should I continue to use this or find a new one?
  • Does Accutane get rid of blackheads/whiteheads? I have 3 white heads right above my nose that have been there ever since I can remember, and a line of whiteheads/blackheads running down my chin.

Hello!

1) Pertaining to the moisturizer, I know Eucerin Professional Repair contains AHA, which can increase your skin's sensitivity to sunlight, which you definitely don't want while you're on accutane. Maybe just use that for areas under clothing. For my face I use Cetaphil daily facial moisturizer because it contains SPF 15. I'm only a couple weeks into treatment (80mg a day for 5 months) but my skin is already very dry. Cetaphil has been doing a good job keeping it under control. As far as breakouts go, you'd probably be OK with anything that says "facial" on it because those won't clog your pores and cause acne. Just make sure you use a good sunscreen if you're going outside.

2) Aquaphor Healing Ointment definitely does wonders. It is supposed to be a noncomedogenic, meaning it won't clog pores. I use it too, and I sometimes get little pimples around my lips, but I think they're just caused by the initial breakout that many people on accutane experience.. I'm hoping I won't have to worry about the little pimples anymore after a couple months into treatment. I use normal chapstick during the day which does a fine job with keeping my lips moist. I really only use aquaphor at night before I go to bed because it stays on better than regular chapstick.

3. Accutane WILL get rid of blackheads and whiteheads. You just have to give it some time. I'm not sure how far you are into treatment, but my derm told me not to expect much improvement until 3 months.

I hope this helped. Any other questions just ask!

Yeah, I agree with the poster above. Cetaphil was definitely a life saver on accutane and now even post accutane for me.

For lips, I used Burt's Bees Acai Berry......as a guy, I tried to limit as much "shine" as I could when I was out in public and it worked well enough that I still use it today even though I'm not on accutane. But, I did use Aquaphor at night before I went to bed or whenever I was home and not going anywhere.

Definitely give it time. I've been on accutane three times and each time was a different length of treatment. I'm about a year and a half removed from my last accutane treatment and aside from pimples here and there, my acne is usually not too much of a problem but definitely still something I keep an eye on.
