So I finally had my dermatologist appointment today. I went for severely oily skin and was feeling rather confident that I would be able to get a low dose of Accutane. My nose had bubbles of oil coating each pore (literally 100s of them) on my nose and forehead. I couldn't even bear to look the receptionist in the eyes because I was so disgusted with myself (and have been for the past 2 months or so), but I purposefully did not blot before entering the hospital so that the dermatologist could see my problem.

I get in and I am immediately rejected at the proposal of Accutane. She told me to be thankful that I didn't have acne and only oily skin. I was so upset but kept my cool. Instead she just prescribed Tazorac. **** that. I used Retin-A Micro for 2.5 months and it increased my oil production by 100%. No way I will ever use a topical retinoid again.

Sorry for the rant, I had to get that out. Anyway, this is my question: My father is a physician - can he prescribe a low dose of Accutane for me? Or can only dermatologists do it?

It's a fairly new law that only derms can prescribe accutane now.

I think maybe some counseling sounds more appropriate than Accutane. It sounds like you are way too harsh on yourself over something so small as oily skin. I hope this doesn't sound harsh but I'm reading a lot of low self-esteem.

If you're still a teenager, then you're just going to have to be patient and wait and see if this goes away as you get older.

Your dermatologist is right, you should be thankful that you don't have acne and oily skin. It sucks.

When you used Retin-A Micro, did you use it in gel form or cream form? The cream is usually for people with dry skin, and can give the appearance that the skin is more oily.

Accutane is for acne, every doctor knows that. I am sorry but this is the cold hard truth about, once a doctor sees that a medication is not fit for you it will never be. Since I was 13 I always had extremely oily sikin. Everytime I ran my finger on my nose and hold it in the sunlight you can see how thick the film of oil is. But not anymore!

The season why retinoid and bp is not working for you is that it dehydrates your skin. Oil is produce more in attempt to rehydrate those dammage areas. I learned this the hard way after using pro activ, duac, retinoids and harsh products. The only thing to do to cure oily skin is to bring back the moisture that was loss from the harsh products. Once the skin realizes it has enough moisture it will immediately stop producing excess oil, unless you have hormonal oily skin.

This is the regimen that I use:

- No overexfoliation and chemical exfoliation only physical every one a week: Exfoliation dries the skin causing it to produce more oil. AHA and BHA should be avoided because they peel the top layer of the skin causing it to be exposed from bacteria causing acne.

- Use a moisturizing cleanser to soothe dehydrated oily skin, only once a day (preferably at night). By using it only once a day, you prevent skin from being constantly dehydrated from washing too much. If you think about it, it makes sense to wash the face only once because once you get home you are carrying dirt and bacteria on your face and it needs to be washed off, at night skin naturally repair itself and washing in the morning is not needed.

- Use a good moisturizer, I cannot stress enough moisturizing is the most important of all regime. I have skipped washing my face for a day or two and I never break out anymore. It turns out that once the top layer of your skin is exfoliated, the skin underneath is prone to bacteria causing acne and irritants.

- Do not scrub your face during eashing, ONLY wash your face gently while massaging for less than a minute (I prefer less than 30 seconds)

WARNING: Just becuase a product is labeled Moisturizer and Hydrating Face wash doesnt mean that it won't cause acne, always read reviews about the product that you want to use. I recommend to read the lowest of the low ratings and if it has more than 4 bad ratings DITCH IT!! This is what I did for a week before finding the right products that is suited for me.

This member said that use cerave hydrating cleanser, and one i did. I broke out horribly, always research the products that you want to use before putting it on your face. After going through every bottle of hydrating face wash I finally found the holy grail material. Lacura creamy face wash and Lacura Hydrating Cleanser, no one broke out from using this and I never did! I also use Lacura anti wrinkle night cream, the wrinkle fighting ingredients are so tiny that I wouldn't even call it a wrinkle cream it is a moisturizer.

These have been my allies and I saw instant results after using this routine for 4-5 days. No gimmick.

Thanks to a fellow member who provided this information , I no longer have oily skin! YAY!

I hope this helps and dont worry it gets better!

You're right, my self-esteem is in the gutter. And I'm 21, so I doubt this will be over any time soon.

I had the gel form - and it didn't give the "appearance" of more oil. It DID cause more oil production. Prior to using it I would have a film of oil on my face, and I wasn't bothered by it much. But after using it for a couple of months I could literally see oil seeping out of each pore and accumulating on each pore like a bubble. It really is disgusting. It's easy to say oily skin isn't a big deal, but my case is extremely severe.

Have you tried the oil cleansing method or b5?

No to both. I won't pop 20 pills of B5 a day.

I wouldnt advice it but you could try megadosing on vitamin B5 (Pantothenic acid). Try another derm first.
