Long story short, I haven't had a nodule acne breakout in nearly 3 years. Last Thursday, 2 "sprouted" right below my eyes/above my cheekbone...think lots of swelling, very uncomfortable. The dermatologist that had successfully treated me many years ago retired and another physican took after her practice. I made an appointment with him, and he was a TOTAL JERK to me.. basically wanting to test for staph infection, MERSA, etc.. which I didn't have an issue with, but he didn't want to address my immediate swelling and pain issues while waiting for the test results. In the meantime, I'm getting ready to go to the Dominican Republic on vacation 3/26 - 4/2 and I told him this. He put me on 100mg twice a day doxycycline, and told me I had to wait for the test results to come back before he'd do anything else. He said the results woudln't be back until after I left on vacation.. SO he also gave me a script for Keflex to fill and take with me. Said he would call with my results and hopefully the Keflex would cover whatever was causing the issue (he wouldn't believe that it was a random flareup)
Now, fortunately, I have my test results back and everything was normal, meaning no abnormal bacteria, which is great! And the nurse said I should discontinue Doxy use a day before sun exposure. Here's what she didn't say and no one would return my call (yes, I'm getting a new doctor)... should I just discontinue the Doxy and take nothing or do I start the Keflex? What are the chances that if I continue the doxy at my dosage and I won't have sun sensitivity. I have gone tanning 2 times this week (12 minutes at a time in a bronzer) while on the doxy and I didn't have any issues. (please no speeches on how tanning is bad. I go before vacations because it has helped me not to burn when I do go and I use an SPF 30 on my face and 15 on my body all of the time)
So he won't return my call, I'm supposed to stay on the doxy until Sunday, but then what do I do???? Drop the doxy and take the Keflex? Stay on the doxy and see if there is sensitivity to sun? Drop the doxy and leave the antibiotics in my suitcase? I do have an appointment with a new dermatologist right after I get home, but I just don't want to see the existing situation on my face get worse when it appears that the infection is breaking up and some of the swelling is down.
Help!

i can tell you i was taking 100mg of doxy twice a day and went to the beach and after an hour or so i got fried. also my hands were tingling and my lips swelled up. i had to stay out of the sun for a few days so the second time i went to the beach i dropped down to 100 mg once a day and i was fine to stay in the sun for a few hours at a time but for some reason i got some sort of heat rash on my chest. so you might want to discontinue the use of it while at the beach or stay under an umbrella the entire time.
