ok, before going to bed last night i started to have ringing and some hearing-loss in my right ear... i woke up and it was still there sad.gif

all i can think of is maybe i have a blockage of ear-wax (when my mom was a kid she had to get a chunk of ear wax removed by a doctor bb_shock.gif ). i mostly sleep on my left side so maybe when i sleep the wax just oozes down my right ear. i clean my ears with q-tips every day so i dont know what the deal is.

any other ideas?
should i see a doctor?

Yes go to a doctor. It's not blockage if your ears are ringing. Maybe tinitus(sp?)?

YOu could have also damaged them with loud music or maybe you dug too deep with your Q-Tip and damaged the drum or something else int he canal.

thanks blackbird... i'll probably see a doc or call the advice nurse tomorrow if nothing changes.

i think i can rule out loud noise and ear infection as causes... there's no pain involved and i havent been listening to any loud music. the strange thing is that its only in one ear and i just noticed this last night while i was studying. in fact, ive been studying almost non-stop for the past two days (exam is tomorrow). maybe too much studying is to blame laugh.gif

im always careful with q-tips and i never go too deep so im pretty sure that's not the cause either.

maybe a spider crawled up my ear and died in there ohmy.gif

Sounds like tinnitus.

Loads of people get it, it's not at all rare - I have it myself, on occasion, in a mild form. Annoying though it is, there's nothing you can do about it (I don't think?).

"tinnitus", well at least there's a name for it... i hope it goes away soon.

i found some potential causes at:
http://www.holistic-.../tin_causes.htm

-- buildup of wax (that was my first guess)

-- Temporary tinnitus can also results from loose ear hair or a fragment from a recent haircut. They get deposited close to the ear drum, vibrate and create thunderous notes (i just got a haircut last week and the trimmer always leaves pieces of hair in my ear)

-- For reasons not yet entirely clear to researchers, stress seems to worsen tinnitus (ive been studying all weekend for an exam tomorrow).

i hope its just a piece of hair... i guess it would just break down over time. i really hope this is temporary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks for helping me cynic and blackbird!!!!!

GO TO THE DR, RIGHT NOW, 2 years ago that happened to me, I thought oh I just have an earache, it'll go away, well in 10 days it didn't so I made a Dr appt, DR said take antibiotics no signs of infection but take them cause it takes 10 days for your insurance to give approval for you to see a specialist, I took the antibiotics, nothing, Specialist couldn't determine the cause, I was getting ringing, dizziness, nausea, I thought he maybe I am sick, was not, not that way anyway, PLEASE PLEASE go to the Dr, 2 years later I am now diagnosed as moderately to profoundly deaf, your ears are very important (and eyes), one of my most recent specialists from kaiser told me it is important on sudden hearing loss you got to the Dr right away, don't let them patronize you and say oh nothing is wrong, insist on tests, like cat scan, etc, this is your hearing we are talking about, I am only 26 and I really hope you read this, my life has changed dramatically, I can't order from a drivethrough, have trouble working, my kids get frustrated with me 4 and 5 years old, it sucks, please go to the dr....i wish this on noone....

If it is a piece of hair,. the doctor will just put some hot oil or other liquid(not burning hot but still hot) and drain it out. However don't do it yourself unless a doctor tells you how.

wow, realangel, i appreciate the concern, and im sorry to hear about your hearing loss (oops, no pun intended)... well my hearing has definately improved today and if it continues to improve i'll probably hold off on seeing a doctor (but dont worry, i wont be waiting ten days if the problem persists).

i can tell its gotten better because when i brush my hand against the ear i can hear the scraping sound much better (yesterday it was very muted). i can also tell by plugging my left ear (the good ear) and snapping my fingers by my right ear... it sounds louder than it did yesterday. i would say its about a 50% improvement from yesterday. i took my exam this morning (molecular genetics, ugh) so i should be less stressed out now and i'll be sure to get a full night's sleep tonight (i got about 8 hours of sleep in the past two nights).

blackbird, i really think it is a piece of hair causing this. i got a haircut last week and i specifically remember seeing bits of hair in my ear... maybe when using a q-tip i pushed a piece of hair deeper into the ear. im a little worried that draining my ear with a hot liquid could do more harm than good... hopefully, my ear is capable of dealing with this on its own.

thanks for the help, guys!!!!!

thanks for the concern, really even if it is just a piece of hair, i don't think your ear can expel it on it's own, GLAD to hear you are going to the Dr, for reals girls ears and eyes are something to take seriously, you can't replace them. Goodluck!

do you take accutane? i read that it can result in earloss. go see your dermatologist, and see if thats any of the side effects for acne meds you may be taking.

whoa, its been a while since i checked back here.

anyway, here's what happened... i had SSHL (sudden sensorineural hearing loss). i went completely deaf in my right ear for no apparent reason. i went on high dose prednisone for a while and got my base and mid-frequency hearing back. i've lost my treble in my right ear and will probably never get it back again. i also have constant tinnitus in my ear but i dont let it bother me. the prednisone (steriod) screwed up my face for a bit, but at the time it was the least of my concerns.

moral of story: nobody is in control of their life. fucked up shit can happen to you at any time for any reason. so just keep living, and try to enjoy life as much as you can.

what? more update you say?

ok, well right now i still have some acne, but i seem to be doing well now that im on my second tube of differin gel. my routine these days is just a few warm splashes of water at night followed by differin gel. in the morning i shower, shave with aveeno shave gel and gillette sensor excel blades, wash with kiehl's gentle foaming facial cleanser and i only apply the ittybittiest amount of skintactix moisturizer.

i dissappeared from this board when it was getting updated and i couldn't log in for a week. i realized how obsessive i was getting on these boards and decided to focus on other shiznit instead. i was just strolling by today in case some miracle acne cure popped up on the scene. ahhh well.

ok then,
peace!

oh yeah... no i do not take accutane... and thankfully i still have two ears biggrin.gif

im gonna check into that though, becasue differin is a retinoid just like accutane. shit, who knows what the cause was... SSHL is pretty much a mystery right now.

Oh man, I feel really bad for you, man. That's terrible. But, I guess you're very fortunate you didn't go completely deaf, or that it was concentrated to one ear. Take care, bro. Keep me updated too!
