I was just wondering if anyone had any experiance of using Trimethoprim for their acne in the UK? I had my first appointment with a dermatolgist last wednesday and she basically gave me 3 choices.
1. Learn to live with it (I'm 37 years old and suffered with acne for 20 odd years, if i've not learnt how to live with it yet I don't suppose i ever will!!!!!!)
2. Roaccutane however she was against this due to my current emotional state - I've just come off Dianette after it made things MUCH worse and I seem to spend ALL my time crying these days over the state of my skin. I'm hoping it's a hormonal thing and that I'll start to feel better about myself once the effects of Dianette wear off!
3.Trimethoprim - Usually prescribed for urinary tract and chest infections in the UK. However after failing with so many other antibiotics she felt it was time to at least give it a go.
I must admit I was terribly excited about it after reading loads of reviews on here from people saying that their acne had improved very quickly but i now realise that the American version, Bactrim, also has sulfamethoxazole????? whatever that is?
Anyway it would be great to hear from anyone in the UK who has had experiance of this drug or anybody else for that matter who may know a bit more about it.

Tried it last year after oxytetracycline didn't do the job. Took it for 5 months and...it works. No doubt, really helped clear my inflammation. However it is a strong antibiotic and wiped out all my good bacteria while taking it = yeast infections+stomach aches. Also if you are 37, there is no point in an antibiotic, they simply mask the problem and dont get to the root. At least accutane, despite being dangerous could possibly cure you for life.

Seems to be working for me

After years of trying other medications with little or no success, after six weeks on this I'm starting to see results. No side effects, no problems. Still have some spots but nothing like before and am hopeful they'll clear too. Doc gave me no info about the drug though. Am just learning online about when's best to take it, about possible side effects and that I may eventually build up resistance. Not to moan on though. Am pleased it seems to be the one thing that works...

Cleared me up in pretty much precisely 2 weeks after starting it, but, then had allergic reaction (rash) and had to stop. The rash went in about 48 hours but acne returned after a few days.
