Hey guys, its been a close to 7 weeks since i went on accutane, and i figured it was about time for me to share some lights on my experience so far. My face had since improved quite a bit since (or so i hope, as you would be able to judge for myself in the coming posts) Just a quick re-introduction of myself. I am a 26 years old who has been suffering from acne ever since i was 14. I am 5'9 and weight 146lbs (just over 4 months ago i weight close to 190lbs)

All this while, my skin has been in pretty bad shape but during January 2011 months back it got A LOT worse for reasons beyond me. What really brought me down was that they were mostly cystic pustules (the big ulgy ones) acne and they were found on both sides of my face and my jawline (never got them in my life before) and my jawline looks absolutely hideous now. It was officially the worse breakout period of my life, having 5 or 6 cystic acne appearing on the same spot can really swing your confidence into depression in a split second!!! And i naively thought i would grow out of it. It got so bad that the the first thing my friends said to me unanimously was "Are you very stressed lately? What happened to your face??" Like many of you, i have tried almost everything off the shelf (you name it, i've tried it. Maybe the only thing left undone is applying urine or sexual discharge on my face) and my condition got so bad that my family members were shock and advised me to see a doctor and they got worried i might not get a job because of this. All this time whenever i had a problem i always go to a general doctor where i will be prescribed Doxy and antibiotics topical treatment that last for about 3 weeks. So anyways, i hit up the derm on 25th April 2011 and was prescribed erythromycin and Differin 0.1% while waiting for the results of my blood test. On April 13, i was offically prescribed Accutane (10 mg/day for the 1st month, and increase of dosage thereafter).

This is how my face looked the dayfew days before i started accutane. Note that I was on erythromycin and differin during this time and had been on it for a month before my accutane treatment.

PLS BE PREPARED BECAUSE THIS CAN BE PRETTY GROSS! NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED. and i apologise for that, i cant believe my face got that bad..

1st week of treatment:

These are my observations. No dry lips so far, nevertheless i can see them coming soon as i feel my lips getting drier and tighter and overall my face feels dry but it had been the case ever since i got on Differin, so not too much differences there. The greatest and most unwanted side effect so far is the IB. Prior to Accutane, i felt that my skin was starting to calm down a little after having gone on Differin + erythromycin for almost 2 weeks and a lot of the cystic acne were starting to dried out and resulted in flaky scraps. I would like to point out that Differin has really made my skin feel nice and smooth (although it doesnt look this way at all, it does feel really smooth and soft, at least on the non-acne parts of the face) However, just 2 days into tane, i broke out again, some on the forehead, left cheeks and a few of them just above both my eyebrows and some on my neck. I also noticed that the current existing acne (the pustules especially) got even 'pus-tier'. I am not sure if it is the late nights i have been having (im having my finals this month, been sleeping at 2am almost every night compared to the usual 12am) but my gut is telling me its the tane-effect at work because i have never had acne on my neck before. I also noticed that my muscle ached more after workout and my eyes are getting drier.

Since this is already the 7th week, i will be updating the progress for the rest of the week within today or the next few days. Stay tuned!

I honestly believe i will be able to inspire a lot of you if someone with that bad of a skin like myself managed to clear up and i am sure it will offer hope to people with similar skin condition who are usually not that hopeful. smile.gif

For me, i just want to have the basic right to enjoy being clear skin and live life to the fullest and not having to worry about the next big thing on my face. I have many big dreams and the thought of acne and how it might endanger everything that i strive for just disgust me. Enough is enough. Let's fight this damn disease together.

Current condition of my face: Cystic acne with loads of red marks.

Hey, you can always make an account on www.photobucket.com, and once the account is made, simply change the privacy settings to allow public use, then post the link of the picture on here. Thats what I did.

Anyways, good luck with your course of accutane! Where you don't have acne.. your skin looks very vibrant and healthy! I really believe your skin will look amazing after accutane! Stay in there. 10mg/day isn't much so don't expect much results right now.

chensg's: U can use photobucket as mentioned by 13owman, or Tiny Pic. Any other image hosting website shall do the trick. 10mg daily is certainly not enough based on your weight. An increase of dose might help speed things up but it would mean more side effects. Endure this process and i'm sure accutane would be able to clear things up for u. Accutane is known to be highly sucessful for cystic acne sufferers.
Take care and good luck in your course.

4th week of treatment (3/5/2011)

This is how my skin looked like during the 4th week of treatment. As u can see there isn't much progress on these but like what most had said i believe 10mg/day is not enough to expect major changes but this was also the last week im on 10mg. Just to share, the way i took my tane is that i will take them after lunch w/ plain water and hearing that it works best when it goes with a fatty meal. Therefore, i will slip in a fish oil cap during my lunch to prepare it for the tane i was taking. I also take Vit e once or twice a day during random period.

http://i12.photobuck...e/5-3-20112.jpg
http://i12.photobuck...e/5-3-20113.jpg

I apologize as i had been too caught up with my finals and had forgotten to take pics of my progression during the 3rd week. I was never known for my discipline, haha. To sum it up tho, i felt close to nothing as far as side effects are concerned. my lips did not get overly dried, and my skin was slightly less oily than usual and that was it. However, i did get tane headache due to the lack of water drank. I knew this because i had read about such headaches earlier and the it pretty much went away once i had properly hydrated myself. So, drink more water during this period!

As far as the skin condition is concerned, i noticed that my skin had more or less calmed down and new cysts were getting less common (although minor ones were still popping out occasionally) and i still get some noticeable blackheads on my forehead. Nevertheless, i could feel that my skin had calmed down from the months of madness and it was starting to get down the process of healing itself out.

6th week of treatment (21/5/2011)

Okay! This marks the 6th week of treatment and the 2nd week i have been on 20mg/day. i was feeling really excited about this because i felt 10mg/day was too little and was really looking forward to see what 20mg/day had install for me.

First thing first, here's how my skin looked 2 week into 20mg/day. Just a note: this was taken on 21/5 instead of 17/5, sorry for the inconsistency in dates, i took the pics whenever i remembered. smile.gif However i did found a pic of myself taken on the 5/9.

http://i12.photobuck...e/5-9-20112.jpg
http://i12.photobuck.../5-21-20111.jpg
http://i12.photobuck.../5-21-20112.jpg

The effects 20mg/day have on me was quite bad initially. My lips was starting to really dry up big time and they were starting to crack. I use vaseline n apply them to my lips whenever the vaseline comes off and they helped a lot and it prevent future cracks and i found they gives out a nice looking shine to the lips too! The skin around my lips was also starting to crack and it would get very flaky if no moisturizer was apply to them. You will not be able to see how dry they get on the pics as i almost always put on moisturizer before taking this pics. But, a word of caution, prepare loads of vaseline n moisturizer!! You'll need them! Other emotional side effects that supposedly came with tane was non-existent for me.

Skin condition wise, you noticed prior i had these huge cysts that was almost always pus-ty and i will avoid touching them even when they bleed when i shower (i just lightly use a tissue to dab it and dry up the blood around it). What happened was that these pus will soon harden itself out and get turned into a big patch of scrap which u can see. Annoyingly, this is also this period where u will look the most hideous as most of the scraps are hanging there waiting to come off and sometimes u can see them dangling about to fall and you will feel tempted to peel the crap of them. BUT, never touch them until they are ready to fall! And by ready i mean let them come off naturally, i know this is hard but there are no options here. The way mine came off happens mostly when i am in the showers and when the skin gets all soft and all and when I'm washing my face those disgusting piece of skin will just fall off when u start massaging your face. Once again, don't pick on them. It will create scarring.

By the 6th week most of the scraps had came off and also most of the cysts i had had mostly flatten itself out and what was remained was smooth RED acne marked skin. You can see that my face actually got redder and the marks are looking more pronounced. I had also stopped getting new pimples during this period. The big cyst on my nose was also almost completely gone. There wasn't so much post redness on the nose largely because the area on my nose are not really easily scarred for some reason and from past experience cysts come n go on that area but redness eventually fade completely. So, this concludes my progress 6th week into the treatment. I will be posting updates for my 7th week soon and hope u guys can offer me your inputs and stay tuned. I hope i help. smile.gif

Finally, to all who's feeling despair, take it from me, don't. I have come to terms with what had happened and i can say now the worse it over (touchwood!) and i came out of it a stronger person. so, take heart and don't give up. Though friends/family have told me i should have started this much earlier and would have avoided this mess all together, i acknowledge what past is past n we can only look forward. So, don't give up n stay positive!

Thank you so much for the help rendered! I was thinking the same thing initially, i was pleading with my derm to up my initial dosage to start me off at 20mg/day min but he said he wanted to take on a more cautious approach and will prefer it that way. But, seeing the effects of tane effects at 20mg currently for me, perhaps he was right and i am glad my IB was not bad if not non-existent at all. smile.gif Anyway, you mentioned acne is back for you, oh my, is it kept under control tho? I hope it is. In the meanwhile, stay clear and happy!

hi chensg

20mg for a start is good. Just slowly work your way up to your cumulative dosage.

I was on 30mg previously and had a fair share of side effects too. Acne is back and im not really sure if its for good =((
Now im just on a mere 20mg weekly. My derm is reluctant to let me be on full dose again. Even on 20mg weekly, i am already having an IB. Was'nt really prepared for that IB to happen but it did. I guessed i just have to bite my teeth and hope for the best.

Lets pray for acne to be gone FOR GOOD!!!!!!!!

Was your acne very mild when it came back? My acne has come back as well. Is the 20mg weekly helping?

Hey there. I *finally* made it to the thread. I am on 30mg a day... (20 days in right now)... I have this weird feeling in my lips. Almost a numb/tight feeling but nothing is cracking since I use Aquaphor all of the time. I ended up buying bulk blistex too just in case but I use it year-round anyway.

Its so hard for me NOT to touch my face. In the first week or so my face looked great! I even went out without make up on but anyways it seems to be coming out now and some pimples are pretty painful and feel like they are deep. I keep getting about 4 or 5 small ones around my lips and they hurt a lot... i guess the aquaphor is keeping it clogged or promoting these zits.

Enough of me- thanks for this post... and the encouraging words that you are giving to others. It gets discouraging when you are on medication and it seems to not help or make it worse- then we all want to stop because of it. lol

Look forward to your next post!!!!! Keep us updated!!!! *smile*

Hi guys its been a while since i last post and i am now on 40mg/day for about 2weeks now. Bumps have pretty much all flatten out and for the past few months i have been concentrating instead on trying to lighten up those ridiculous looking acne marks. the remedies i use are mix of apple cider vinegar, baking soda mask, egg white mask and the occasional aspirin honey mask.

does any of you have suggestion how to further fade those marks other than the methods aforementioned?

the tane effects so far has been rather drastic on a relative level. my eyes and lips have been very very dry and bloodshot eyes are the norm when im in really cold places. vaseline and eye drops are a must for me. but thats all the side effects i have. maybe sensitive thin skin too.

these were taken around july 24th, about 3+ months after i popped my first pill

please let me have ur inputs on my progression so far. thank you so much!

my lips are always feeling tight and dry but i use vaseline instead to get rid of them, it is pretty good but it is not lasting at all. but thankfully i live in asia and the climate isnt as dry. take my advise, do not touch ur face, i tried pickin on my face this one time and my skin reacted badly to it, tane really makes the skin behaves weirdly at this (the skin gets really vulnerable) time so do not attempt to touch ur face at all. on the whole, since its been a while, how is ur skin coming along? to be honest u look great to me on ur avatar, i would have no idea that u even had acne problem! smile.gif

WOW, major improvement! I also noticed the redness is fading pretty quickly to. Your almost there man keep up the great work im impressed. As far as speeding up the redness fading. I would personally go with fresh lemon squeeze, acv, and acv/baking soda mask. Alternate between the three. It helped dramatically with some of my redness and even scars.

lay, Jamie Ann, thank you guys for the compliment. it was difficult to see the improvement on a daily basis, but having a journal really helps u see the diff. i have about another 6 months of treatment to go, but im really trying to get them red marks to fade, u have no idea how ugly it really is. n lay, thanks for the suggestions, do you have to dilute the lemon juice with water tho?

are the both of u on accutane too? hows the progress coming along??

Wow man, awesome results so far. Good luck with the rest of your Accutane course! I'm only on my eighth day but I am really optimistic about what Accutane can do to my skin.
