Repairing the long-term damage from Accutane

9,426 posts in this topic

Yea, looks like I'd have to splash out to get enough seeds - thinking 12-20 plants are needed total -_-

Think I'll look into starting growing come February-March or if I'm lucky late January 2014. Once christmas is over I'll start raw vegan just for the hell of it seeing as it's not far off what I'm doing at the moment bar chicken and salmon. Not expecting to see a huge change but I'm interested to see if I can cope without meat :D Might do a fast once I'm back from post-exam holiday too.

Bit of a coincidence, but I know 2 unrelated people who make or have made their own oil. Just learned about the second person last night.

I don't put much faith in any treatment anymore, but if the price is not beyond me, and the strains they used have a high cannabinoid to THC ratio, I will get some early next year.

What was interesting is that the person who told me about the second person that makes the oil said that she tried it and was getting aggravated because she couldn't get high from it, but it made her feel very relaxed. ....meaning there was likely a comparatively low ratio of THC to CBD and/or other cannabinoids.

I'm not a fan of the THC high, so that is good news for me and makes me eager to attempt trying it.

I still see it as a shot-in-the-dark, but I'm desperate for anything that will help without potentially having severe negative consequences at this point.

So I've just had a 3 hour chat (read presentation) with my parents:

Just PM'ed mes about it, but I broke it down in a fairly systematic way

i) Corporate greed - Vioxx scandal, pharmaceutical companies aren't bothered by health only money
ii) Listed side effects - showed them a generic site which included the most listed side effects
iii) Scientific journals - discussion of mechanisms of action
iv) Actual side effects - showed them some of the boards
v) mentioned background of accutane as a chemotherapy drug
vi) Media - showed them articles on all the kids who committed suicide including JMSIL (james sillcock), I humanised him somewhat but showing his posts to my parents. Also showed them some of IndigoRush's videos on youtube.
vii) Nathan Carr's report - Read through it and highlighted certain paragraphs

My dad connected more with the science behind it. My mum connected more with the humanising characteristics such as IndigoRushes videos on youtube or JMSIL's comments. Then explaining that medicinal cannabis as an actual legitimate thing this video summed it up best - my mum even shed a tear:

Charlotte used a strain with 0.5% THC and 17% CBD - I WANT SOME OF THAT.

Here is the place where people have gone to get hold of the highest grade CBD rich strains in oil form. You need a medicinal use licence and to live in California or Colorado. So I presume that counts everyone out?

I think it's a mistake to take off the THC, both CBD & THC are important for their medicinal effects. With an oil taked without fat THC isn't psychoactive in proper dosage, the liver directly transform it in a better form (11-hydroxy-THC).

Can I just say how excited I am that you guys are finally talking about cannabis oil lol....I've been trying to advocate for this all along!! I notice benefits from simply vaping, but unfortunately It's not potent enough to effect permanent change. SO. basically two things I put together as a widespread truth for myself (and my supportive, brilliant doctor). I have out of control inflammation in my body due to wicked dryness. Naltrexone and cannabis both target inflammation directly and work to help modulate the immune response. It's that simple. Naltrexone produces more endorphins in the body so that I can feel less pain and also directly modulates the immune system through this effect. I'm on month 3 of Naltrexone and doing great. I have my one or two off days, but they are tolerable. On a bad day, there is cannabis. I'm working out full time now and can work overtime with no problem. I do a gluten light diet because that's what's possible for me at this time in my life. Please look into naltrexone...it can't hurt to get information on it. It is safe when you are comparing to other medications, and has very minimal side effects. The only thing I initially got was constipation but that subsided after time and taking a super strength probiotic. Should be taking 50 billion organisms or more. I had been taking less than that and ZERO beneficial flora showed up in a stool test. That's a problem! It's winter time and I'm not worried about getting sick since I know it will be tolerable for once. :)

This girl will be moving to Cali in two years. My life's more important than an awesome job. I hope you all can get your hands on it. Let me know what you find out. I'm in Mass, but dispensaries are not up and running as far as I know yet. You can get a medical marijuana license tho...Totally going to ask about that soon.

Does anyone know if castor oil is an anti-androgen or contains vitamin A? I'm working to regrow my hair. I'm taking biotin (have tried it in the past with no results so I'm not too hopeful), but I don't want to take ANY anti-androgens since I'm super super sensitive to them. My nostrils will instantly dry up, eyes dry up, amongst other not so comfortable things. Any hair loss remedies that improve blood flow to the crown area that isn't an expensive laser system?? or an insanely shifted diet?

Thanks you guys. Hope you are doing okay.

I completely agree Anonyy. Not sure where the idea of removing the THC came from but the two people cured used Rick Simpson Oil which is very high in THC so it clearly has a desired effect on us.

Well I may be wrong, but a documentary was done on CNN by Dr. Gupta on pot and stopping severe seizure disorder and some other chronic illnesses. They found that strain was low in THC and high in CBD which has medicinal properties, but no psycoactivity. scientist believe the CBD quiets the excessive electrical and chemical activity in the brain that cause seizures and etc....One very young girl couldn't even walk etc.... She takes it liquid in her food. There is only one dispensary in Colorado I believe it is and they only ask for donation.

You can read or watch the documentary just Google it, for some reason it won't let me copy and paste lately I don't know why???? It's called weed and featured on CNN.

That does not count me out, as I have both of those requirements met. That's doesn't mean that I'm planning on using any Rick Simpson oil anytime soon because I don't react well to marijuana. I would gladly try it if I knew it wouldn't have any unwanted psychological effects or increase anxiety.

Hey everyone, I am from UK - anyone tried out the naltroxene or cannabis oil over here? I am trying to find a supplier to try this out.

My main side effects are my tight and dry face/lips which are always feeling uncomfortable. Some days are better than others but I can't figure out what is causing it. I wash with cerave about once a day and moisturise with the same brand. I also take GLA and hyaluronic acid. My face feels worse at different moments throughout the day, perhaps it flares up or something, but when it does the symptoms feel worse and can also extend to my eyes feeling sore.

I am desperate to get help and have been trying for 11 years!

Hi MovingOn,

Quick few questions if you don't mind? In regards to vaping cannabis, do you feel any benefit beyond while you're high? I simply ask because it may be difficult for me to grow for a while and create RS oil. However, I think I can get hold of a vaper (if I wasn't so fussed with sport I'd simply smoke), so was just wondering if you considered it a worthy benefit? To be honest though, I think getting high once in a while would probably do me some good anyway.

In regards to castor oil I would message anonny, he seems knowledgable on the topic.

I emailed mail@
nickharveymp.com and got this email in response. That last sentence is key! Their considering setting up a specific site/ campaign group with parents and victims of accutane.
I urge you once again to email these MP's (see my signature). We've figured that apart from cannabis oil no-one seems to have recovered from hiding in their rooms trying their own things.
Once we get recognition of this issue is when we get research done into this compound and proper scientific evidence on how we could possibly reverse it and for those outside the
US possibly get compensation when we can prove causation. I've emailed them in response detailing my side effects in gory detail (still being polite and not exaggerating nor using hyperbole).

"Dear Michael,
Many thanks for getting in touch last week and I’m sorry to hear that you have suffered adverse effects after taking RoAccutane.
As you say, there are many people who have experienced similar effects, some of those tragically ending in people taking their own lives. Until we can identify why RoAccutane has such markedly adverse side effects on this group of people and why in particular they are vulnerable to it, the drug continues to pose a risk to the public.
Going forward, Nick and other MPs concerned about this are meeting Minsiters at the Department of Health in the new year to discuss this topic – Minister Norman Lamb expressed very clearly after the debate a few weeks ago that he was very sympathetic to our concerns and wanted to take this forward in the Department. We are currently building up a database from parents we know of and people who have contacted us of all those affected by this issue and I would be grateful if we could add your name and a few brief details to it, namely where you’re from, and just briefly your ‘story’ i.e. how long you took RoAccutane for and what impact it had upon your life – I will also add your email address if that’s OK. I hope then that we can keep the list updated on the campaign and see if someone could set up a website or a campaign group where people like yourself can connect with other victims.
Many thanks and kind regards,

Last message I sent to my parents. Thought some people on here might find it a moderately interesting read.

"It seems I'm venturing down the rabbit hole of conspiracy theories here but bare with me.

This is going off on a tangent on what I'm actually interested in cannabis oil for. However, it's beginning to be recognised that certain compounds within marijuana can be used to treat cancer. The worrying thing is its been around for a while. If you google 'university of Virginia cannabis 1974', a study was done in an attempt to prove that it increases cancer. What it did in fact show was it actually stopped growth and in some got rid of the cancer! This got buried until the last few years apparently. But why would they bury it?

I agree that the health system is there to keep people healthy. However, only when they can make money out of it. If you look through patent laws, it is not possible to patent a plant (marijuana). So what is currently happening is they are trying to create a derivative of the cancer curing properties of marijuana. So their not actually using the original compound that has been shown to be useful, just a synthetic version of it which will have similar effects! This synthetic version can be patented and sold!!

http://scienceblog.cancerresearchuk.org/2009/08/19/cannabinoids-for-treating-cancer/

Here is an excerpt from the above paper:

"In their recent paper, Professor Ines Diaz-Laviada and her team at the University of Alcala in Madrid studied the effects of two cannabinoids – the catchily named Methanandamide (MET) and JWH-015. These are synthetic chemicals that don’t occur naturally in cannabis, although they are similar to compounds found in the plant."

This is from cancer research UK themselves! The 1st paragraph has been worded carefully. It says that smoking cannabis can't cure cancer but man made synthetic versions of specific cannabis elements potentially can. Not sure if I mentioned it here or not, but the reason that smoking cannabis has been shown not to be helpful for all these issues is that it burns off these beneficial compounds, so technically they speak the truth but not the whole truth.

Furthermore, this has made mainstream news in the last few years:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2157389/Tommy-Chong-claims-beat-cancer-using-cannabis.html

They ridicule him that he is trying to cure his own cancer with cannabis oil, this was in 2012. I googled him to see what had happened to him:

http://www.film-news.co.uk/show-news.asp?H=Tommy-Chong-announces-he-is-cancer-free&nItemID=19214

He is living cancer free now..

I promise I'm not going to run away and become a renegade hippy. :D "

This is really encouraging, good work on making the effort Crank! I must write to my local MP too.

Like yourself I'm thinking cannabis oil really is the most promising thing for treating 'tane sides so I'll be looking to get my own sorted if I have no success from my January water fast (another thing which looks to have potential benefits, its just so damn difficult to get done) and Cibdex 20% CBD hemp oil (mentioned I'm going to try this over on the ATM forum - I'm on a differnet username there - Clayton95).

I've ordered 4 bottles of that stuff which are currently stuck at UK customs which isn't great though! Expecting a dawn raid on my home any time!!..

The thing I'm still a bit confused about though is whether THC or CBD, or a combination of the 2 is the most beneficial cannabinoid, and it seems I'm not the only one based on studies. I don't know what the THC content of this Cibdex stuff is, but it'll be under 1.5% as it's classified as hemp. Potentially it could even be one of the other 90+ cannabinoids in the plant, but these are certainly the key 2.

Really hope customs release my shipment as I might give it a go for a few days before my water fast if so.

Hi Tandeout,

Haha customs is such a bummer! The charge I get on ordering Benzoyl Peroxide and the like from this site is extortionate!

This the thing, it seems both have differing beneficial effects. THC seems to be the anti-cancer property and CBD appears to be the neurological property, perhaps with some crossover. The youtube link I posted the other day show's a girl having 300 seizures a week (neurological) used a strain with 17% CBD and 0.5% THC which stopped her seizures. However of note is that both taneabomination used accutaneispoison used regular Rick Simpson Oil which has high THC and reasonable CBD. Again though I've named it the 'apple theory' now. I don't know if it was in a PM to someone or on the board or both, but I remember reading in one of my old textbooks that it's estimated we know about 1-2% of the phytonutrients in an apple. Wouldn't you think that eating an apple would be of more benefit than eating those 1-2% of known phytonutrients?

EDIT: just in case it wasn't clear in the point of this; it would probably be better to get the real thing as opposed to a single extract. But I realise that's easier said than done!

Also to note is I think people have noted that the dose is quite low in the cibdex drops even with a high conc. (Look at the top review on amazon for cibdex). Not trying to crush you before you've started but if it doesn't happen to work don't give up hope! Also remember taneabomination didn't notice effects until about 3 months of consistent use. However, if you notice benefits be sure to let us know. I would love to be proved wrong :D

Do you know what strain/type of cannabis AcctuaneIsPoison or TaneAbomination used for their RSO? I'm tempted to drop them an mail and find out if it's not already know. Could then see what THC/CBD those strains tend to have. It seems AccutaneIsPosion noticed effects much sooner than TaneAbonition did.

I'm still keen to try this Cibdex stuff, and if I feel it's having an effect I might go for the concentrated stuff they do in a syringe. I plan to work up to much higher does than the suggested one...that's assuming I ever get my hands on it - my shipment of 4 x Cibdex finally got released from customs, however FexEx have delivered it somewhere that isn't my home, signed for by someone random! No idea if I'll get hold of it!!

Not yet. I've messaged both and TaneAbomination has replied, I've asked several questions now so just awaiting another response. He's only online sporadically though so might be awhile before I get a reply.

Hahahaha that is a huge pain in the A! Do you reckon you'll get a hold of it, or at least be refunded? Because that is a fair bit of cash (by my student standards anyway). I'm intrigued to see if you get any results as you seem dedicated to the idea rather than half assing it! Let us know what happens!

no joint pain, no.
Agreed Nick Ryan, except that it does not logically follow that an epigenetic change induced by environment is therefore reversible by environment. Humpty Dumpty, bullet to the head, etc.
Dubya B, you are on point today. Brainfog clearing?
Judging by your second post, yes, undoubtedly.
"Something I find very interesting is the few recoveries resulting from water fasting. It has been shown in vitro, that if a cell is starved for long enough, it will begin shedding epigenetic tags and makes its way back towards pluripotency."
Damn, but...
" I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the fasting recoveries since it would be difficult to accomplish the level of "starvation" as in the in-vitro experiments while still living, but it is something to think about.
I have completed a 7 day water fast, and a couple other sufferers have gone 21 and 28 days without remission of symptoms, so it is not a sure thing."
Ouch. Mega ouch.
Still. "This kind comes out only by fasting and prayer." Something to think about.
"She eats organic, makes a living from organic farming, and basically lives organic, but still suffers severe side effects. ...It only helps so much. I will try to get her on this board if I get a chance to speak with her again soon."
I'm fascinated by such cases. I wonder how much vegetables and fat she eats. One million percent organic of either would slay me.
Anonyy is probably wonderful to talk to in person. Disorganized posters typically are lively, engaging conversationalists. But not useful on forums.
Ouch, MovingOn. I continue to do quite well on my regimen. Just need the blue blockers to cut the fluorescent light and I'll be 100%. Standing desks help quite a bit with nap adherence and productivity.
Can you summarize Accutaneispoisons recommendations, TaneAbomination? Ah, Rick Simpson oil, yes legit.
"Excerpt: " The following adverse effects have been reported to persist, even after discontinuing therapy, suggesting persistent (or perhaps slowly-reversing) gene expression changes and epigenetic effects: alopecia, arthralgias, ocular abnormalities, inflammatory bowel disease, keloids, osteopenia, hyperlipidemia, erectile dysfunction, and psychiatric disturbances. Isotretinoin is postulated to have complex effects on the brain and central nervous system.""
This.

About 6 weeks ago I started taking 1200 to 1800 mg of NAC spread throughout the day.

Results:

improved energy

far better skin on arms and back, less inflammation

I take ACC Akut 600. I am going to cycle it. Going off NAC for the first time in the next week, let's see what happens.

Interesting to note if anyone is considering vaping (or already doing it):

http://beyondchronic.com/2012/08/old-hippie-complete-guide-avb/

The stuff left behind after vaping apparently has a high cannibinoid content and you can use it with food. Again I'm not promoting this over Rick Simpson Oil (RSO), just another option.

Once again not advocating it over RSO, just a suggestion.

I'm wary of some of the theories, but I think altered bile flow is quite plausible as one of the things that can happen.

Thanks Crank for updating us on your correspondence with the MPs. Pippa, Sir Nick's parliamentary researcher, was so kind as to return my email too. She really didn't have to do that since I'm not from the UK, so I appreciated it a lot.

Indigo - I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling this down. I wish I had something uplifting to say except I really identify with a lot of what you described. So that's not helpful... I guess know that I have a lot of those same thought patterns and somehow I'm chugging away (barely, some days). There are fleeting moments of not total happiness, but at least a feeling of life is worth living for a little longer. But it's not enough, as I don't have to tell you.

Random thing I came across whilst studying for January exams (so much for enjoying Christmas). It may has some relevance to the fasting theories of 'starving' the neural cells with the aims of resetting the epigenetic tag structure.

http://jp.physoc.org/content/590/3/607.full

Basically shows that 1 single exhaustive bout of exercise can cause a 50-64% reduction in brain glycogen. So I imagine a fast could reduce that further. Whether or not that achieves anything in regards to resolving any symptoms I have no idea. Although the brain in normal circumstances relies pretty much entirely on glucose it can in certain circumstances utilise ketones. To induce ketosis you would need to either follow a ketogenic diet (no carbohydrates, or very limited) for a while or fast for at least 3-5 days. If anyone has knowledge on the topic feel free to debate but perhaps ketosis is the key aspect of 'starving' the cell or maybe there is some other metabolic implication that fasting induces that a ketogenic diet does not.
