Hi guys, am new to posting, but I've been reading Acne.org for a long time now and I totally trust you guys, so I'd like your input on my regimen.
First, let me sum up my skin situation: I had a clear skin teenage years and started getting really clogged pores in my early twenties (a combination of stress, skin picking and bad cosmetics). I started treating my acne 3-4 yrs ago. I had a few phases of mild inflammed acne, from irritation due to various regimens I tried, specially on prescription meds by derms. I also tried a few OTC products. I've always used Avene Cleanance Soapless Cleanser( it cleanses well and doesn't aggravate my acne) and sometimes used neutrogena or zeniac gel cleansers. Let's see the things I tried:
-Locacid (tretinoin cream) } mainly as spot treatment
-Differin gel 0.1%. }
-Isotrexin gel (Erythromycin 2% Isotretinoin 0.05%)
-La Roche Posay Effaclar K (BHA)
-Avene Cleanance K (AHA/BHA)
-BP 2.5%, to which I had a terrible reaction. Red skin.
-Topical Clindamycin
-Topical Erythromycin
-Oral tetracycline, doxycycline
What I found out the hard way: I can't handle BP nor oral antibiotics, too much tretinoin or AHA/BHA results in papules/pustules on areas I don't usually break out. I've decided that it isn't worth going through horrible initial breakouts, I'd rather live with blemishes than visible acne that will cause dark marks. Sunscreen can cause more acne. But I can't go without since I live in a hot humid country where 5 minutes in the sun can fry you if you are under any acne treatment.
Also, I exercise at least once a week, try to eat low GI foods. I have a greasy scalp(but let's not get started on my hair issues) and I try to keep my hair away from my face. I don't really skin pick anymore.
I am struggling to find the right regimen. I am currently only exfoliating every other two nights with Avene Cleanance K(AHA/BHA), moisturising lightly with Avene soothing serum and in the day applying Avene High Protection Emulsion sunscreen after cleansing with Avene Soapless Gel and moisturising. It works in preventing inflammed acne but is not doing that much for my non inflammed acne. I feel that my skin needs a new regimen. May be go the natural way? Any help would be most appreciated. If you have a similar skin, I'd love to hear what worked for you and what did not.
OTC AHA/BHA. Should I change regimen?
