I really do not care what anyone else says I personally KNOW masturbation causes acne FOR ME. If I masturbate I will always get acne one or two days afterwards, I have proven this to myself time and time again, but still can't seem to stop. I really need to. From this day forward I'm going to stop and see how to goes for at least 2 weeks.

^ Ok. Let's say, for the sake of argument, that you are right.

What does this mean? Will you never masturbate or have sex for the rest of your life?

It is most likely the same hormones that are causing you to feel the urge to masturbate that are causing the acne flares. Not the actual act of masturbation itself. Besides, it takes a few weeks for acne to form under the skin before surfacing. So, linking masturbation to a breakout 2 days later isn't very likely.

Feel free to abstain if that suits you, but acne can be managed without having to forego your sex life. Just saying.

Good luck!

This is the ignorance that runs rampant on these forums. Simply because some guy named Dan wrote that stress, food, masturbation, and the sun aren't linked to acne you abandon all common sense and agree with everything you read.

You said it takes a few weeks for acne to form, which I am sure the majority of people here will disagree. I can eat 200 grams of sugar on Friday and be covered in new pimples the next morning.

Feel free to abstain if that suits you, but acne can be managed without having to forego your sex life. Just saying.

I see you found the cure for everyone's acne, care to fill us in?

----

I will tell you my opinion (since I am not an expert scientist like Brandy).

Excessive masturbation is a cause of acne, for some people. Excessive masturbation is more than one time per week. If you want to knock masturbation off of your possible cause of acne list you will need to quit for at least a month. The longer you have been masturbating, the longer it may take for you to see definite results.

----

There are lots of minerals and such in your semen (including a fairly large amount of zinc). When you masturbate every day (some people several times a day), then you are causing a deficiency in those minerals.

Semen contains citric acid, free amino acids, fructose, enzymes, phosphorylcholine, prostaglandin, potassium, and zinc. The average volume of semen produced in a single ejaculation varies from 2 to 5 ml.

Sex and masturbation are not the same thing, some people obviously can't see that. When you masturbate you are causing a lot of stress on your body because you don't have a partner like God intended for it to be done.

-----

Now because we live in a time where sexual images, movies, pictures, videos are everywhere it will be very hard for you to quit. It will take a lot of self-discipline and will-power. You have to keep your mind focused on things other than women. It will be hard, but don't stare at them during the day, keep away from websites that have sexual videos (this might even include y outube for you) and don't watch movies that are rated R. It gets a lot easier after you overcome the first couple temptations. When you have the desire to masturbate, just leave what you're doing and go do something that will take your mind of things (away from your computer, running or walking outside is very nice).

It will be hard, but when you can give up masturbation and pornography you will become a much better, stronger, and more disciplined person. It won't be easy, that's why my last piece of advice may be that extra push you need; ask God for help. Read His word (the Bible) it has LOTS of helpful verses (in the New Testament) that will help you live a better life :)

Good luck, and I wish you clear skin!

A Friend

Pinkunicorn,

Your general tone is uncalled for, and I have never claimed to be an expert, or a scientist, nor did I ever claim to have a cure. If you want to discuss this subject, please do so in a civil manner without insults or putting words in anyone's mouth.

I am a Christian myself, so I'm with you on the God and bible stuff. :)

No one mentioned anything about pornography. Why did you bring that up?

I'm just curious.

Now, my sole point in replying to this thread was to let the OP know that acne can be managed (notice I never said "cured") without altering your sex life, whether that sex life is with yourself through masturbation or with your spouse.

After all, this is an acne support forum, not an "advice on how to handle your sex life" forum.

There are ways that acne can be managed, such as Dan's regimen, that do not require any drastic lifestyle change, change in diet, or change in sex life. That was the point I was hoping to get across.

For those of you who WANT to abstain, more power to you. But don't expect it to cure your acne in the longrun. People have been talking about masturbation on these forums for years, and attempting to go long periods of time without sexual activity in order to clear their acne and I cannot recall one time in which this was a reasonable solution for anyone in the long term. Good luck to you, though, if this is the path you take. I wish you all nothing but the best.

wow...Pinkunicorn...that's not cool at all..

Brandy helps people all the time and she wasn't imposing her views or anything. She made some great points and is just trying to help...I don't understand where you're hostility is coming from

pinkunicorn, that hostility was totally uncalled for. Brandy is extremely helpful and kind. I'm beginning to think that there should be a "Masturbation Megathread" since this topic comes up... say every five seconds or so with no conclusive answer that suits all. ;)

Take responsibility for your health; read the full prescribing information for any medication you take and understand that not all risks or potential side effects will likely ever be fully known.

I apologize if I came across too harsh & it's nice to meet a fellow believer.

Pornography & masturbation are one in the same 90% of the time; even though masturbation tends to come first in life it leads to exploration into porn which IMO is a very harmful thing to become addicted to. I know that females tend to not have as big a problem with this because they are more emotional than males.

The reason I found your post a bit offensive (and I apologize again for expressing that in a harsh way) was because I believe that abstaining from masturbation can cure acne for some people. Dan's regimen seems to upset more people than it helps (myself being one) even though I still use his cleanser. There are tons of "products" out there such as Proactive that cause so much frustration to those of us suffering from acne because they are all about money and selling their products. I DO believe that a drastic lifestyle change and change in diet & exercise to be more specific is a must for those of us suffering from any illness.

So when you tell somebody "But don't expect it to cure your acne in the longrun" I find that to be a very ignorant comment because you have no personal or experimental experience to back that up, while the OP has experienced that change when he abstains; but you are basically shooting him down saying it's impossible and to just give up.

I agree with you that there have been a lot of people who have been "attempting to go long periods of time without sexual activity", but the keyword here is attempting. So while you cannot recall one time in which this was a reasonable solution for anyone in the long term, I cannot recall one time where I have seen somebody legitimately abstain from masturbation for a period longer than three weeks. If it were just masturbation, then I bet it would be easy to quit and see if it has any effect, but because it's combined with pornography, and that has a very strong hold on individuals so therefore it is almost nonexistent to find documented progress of someone abstaining for more than a month.

After all, this is an acne support forum, not an "advice on how to handle your sex life" forum.

In this instance, it's both. Because you can't get support for your acne problems without getting help on how to quit the thing you believe is causing your acne. I can say the same thing about the holistic section of the site, this is an acne support forum, not an "advice on how to eat healthy" forum. :P

The topic comes up every five seconds with no conclusive answer because everyone is waiting for someone else to prove the masturbation effect. And because masturbation is such a strong addiction, there are very few people who can abstain for a month or more and live to post about it lol.

The mere fact that there are so many masturbation threads and posts is because so many people believe that there is a connection there.

if you get acne after masturbation then it is probably due to the hormone fluctuations. a LOT of hormones are involved in orgasm/sex/masturbation, etc. and hormones are linked to acne in different situations. sorry for tmi, but i tend to break out a lot right before my period (a time of a LOT of hormone fluctuation). i know a lot of males admit to breaking out after masturbation, do females experience this as well? to all the females willing to answer on here.

again though, it isnt the ACT of masturbation that seems to be causing this, it is just a correlation between the two, probably strongly linked to the hormonal changes going on in your body during and after masturbation. (and hormonal changes can happen for other events too)

old regimen: proactiv, sometimes other cleansers

new regimen: Aveeno ultra calming foam cleanser

-Sometimes I add the AVON light exfoliating beads into the cleanser in my hand to exfoliate

-Witch Hazel as an astringent

-Neutrogena face moisturizer for sensitive skin (at night 2 drops of jojoba oil)

If needed:

-Sometimes I use St. Ives green tea cleaner for acne

-Neutrogena BP 2.5% for spot treatment

Make-up:

L'oreal True Match press powder( any recommendations on natural make up with good coverage??)

Avon smooth minerals concealer (they stopped making this product though, so I am looking for a good concealer, recommendations please!)

diet: 2-3 cups of green tea a day, trying to make food diet better

vitamins: currently looking for a good brand of fish or krill oil

OMG srsly, some people here scare me. If you're looking for a cure for acne in bible, be my guest.

But most of us live in the 21 century, and here people go to the hospital when they have a severe illness and need an operation. They don't just lie in their beds and let it kill them like God intented to.

So I would advise everyone to listen to their dermatologist, who has years of experience and relies on scientific proof when it comes to treating acne, and not to religious BS.
