Does anyone know, on average, how long it takes for Saw Palmetto to take effect? By the way, I'm a male and my acne is due to hormones/masturbation.

The research on saw palmetto is a huge mess. It does truly help with benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), but probably by some method other than anti-androgen activity. The evidence is tending toward the conclusion that saw palmetto doesn't lower systemic DHT or testosterone levels, but does reduce BPH symptoms and sometimes actually shrinks the size of the prostate. How? Grab bag of possibilities.

Acne in the average male is rarely an issue of extremely high testosterone (doubt.gif), but rather hypothesized hypersensitivity of androgen receptors in the follicle/sebaceous glands. Anabolic steroid users are an obvious exception. Even if saw palmetto could lower DHT levels, the hypersensitivity would remain.

IMHO, attempting to mess with systemic hormone levels in males without proper endocrine tests and a physicians supervision is not a good idea. Saw palmetto is probably harmless precisely because it can't change hormone levels.

I'm a 26 year old girl and I started saw palmetto for acne and facial hair. I do not masturbate and I'm not really sure if I notice a change in the facial hair because I've had a few laser treatments for it BUT my face just LOOKS BETTER. I look less like a nerd and more like I used to. I have no idea what happened to me, but it's better now. Been taking up to 7 of the 160mg gelcaps(NOW brand) a day. My face surged with some acne, hair, and oil on the first day so I upped it and it reversed.
