oil and water do not mix very well.

perhaps its part of containing our bodys water content, otherwise we would need more water to stay hydrated.


#1.critical nutritional issues- b12(three forms exist), Calcium(yogurt, cheese or calcium phosphate supps) and vitamin d(sun or supps not to exceed 1000 iu). heme iron-most absorbable from meat only, clams are high. these are the most difficult vitamins to get and absorb. All others or about the same in difficulty in absorption. MAgnesium in our food supply is generally low as well, try natural calm supps.
#2 Fats- monounsaturated should dominate(olives), followed by polyunsaturated plant sources(nuts) but not if you have acne. the health benefits of fish oil and fish are controversial and i dont consume them due to mercury contamination and immune supression avoid processed fats if possible.
#3 Protein/amino acids- dairy and eggs best sources for tryptophan and methionine which convert to powerful antioxidants melatonin and glutathione.
#4 Carotenoids- alpha- beta carotene, beta cryptoxanthin, lutein zeaxanthin, astaxanthin. these are vital to human nutrition, carrots, butternut squash, pumpkin, chili pepper and cayenne pepper are the best sources.
#5 Regularity-BM at least once a day, Moist, large stools, 1 piece ideal, no maldigestion, no floating stools indicative of maldigested fat. HOW- insoluble fiber- wheat and cooked vegetables. soluble fiber-oats/ good bacteria ferment soluble fiber making short chain fatty acids that inhibit pathogens.
#6 Circadian cycles-Light, get up with the sun, and expose your entire body to it. darkness-melatonin is released upon the sensing of absolute darkness. sleep in a pitch black room, try to ensure 10 hours total darkness, wear sunglasses before bed. do not eat too late at night.
#7 Desirable physiological states(positive moods/emotions) do precisely what you like and what feels good to you, but not regardless of consequences, just from a perspective that, you own your life, and can determine precisely what you do with it and need not answer or ask of permission from anyone,achieving maximum autonomy and self government.

Acne has huge evolutionary benefits, from my perspective.

If I had never got acne, I wouldn't be as ridiculously healthy and active as I am today. I never would have researched and experimented with diet and lifestyle changes. If instead of getting, acne, I got cancer when I was 60 or slowly got fat or something, I never would have been MOTIVATED enough to find out what was wrong with me. Acne has direct social implications and inspires immediate change and questions.

Despite suffering from it through supposedly the "best" 6 years of my life, i'm very glad I got acne, and even more glad I beat it into oblivion and got on top of it.

I eat healthfully too, but it doesn't seem to have a huge impact. Maybe I should get me a baseball bat...

We are talking about eating baseball bats right? Ye does wonders for me rolleyes.gif
I dont agree with what I posted in the nutrition section anymore. I just think its not worth it. People worrying about food and acne all day in order to improve their life somehow while they are actually just digging a bigger hole for themselfs. The only reason to eat right should be to feel a bit better. Because the chances you will be able to reduce your acne in such an amount that its worth the effort instead of just trying a new topical is astronomicly low.

Basically get a low effort topical like differin or something more harsh if that doesnt work and just start living the life you want to live!

That's pretty interesting.

I also think we're probably more horny than the average person.
Low dose oral antibiotics for the long-term. Hibiclens morning and night in the shower. Occassional max strength triple-antibiotic white petroleum jelly all over the face (rarely, now). And occassionally salicylic acid wipes prep followed by 10% benzoyl peroxide PanOxyl (deactivates the Hibiclens, though). If you can afford oral or topical retinoids, you should try them.

Surely oil production helps your skin maintain health. This seems so much like common sense that I was flabbergasted when I ran into this thread. Please allow me to make an argument.

1. If you have painfully, dry, damaged, or chapped lips there is one thing that apparently relieves them more than anything. Rubbing the oil from your nose onto your lips.

2. If you wash your hands too frequently (I volunteered in hospitals and learned this the hard way), the soap strips away too much oil (and some top layers of skin) and your skin will become dry an uncomfortable... eventually prone to cracking, etc. Relief can come from skin oil or petroleum jelly... and obviously washing your hands less.

3. Washing your face during winter months when your skin tends to be less oily/drier as an adult leads to overly dry skin. It hurts. Why does it hurt? Because your skin needs oil.

4. It is an obvious fact that oil protects bird feathers and mammalian hair. Why not human skin?

5. Leather lasts longer if you condition it with oil. It makes it softer and more resistant to wear. Leather is skin....

6. To my touch, my wife's skin feels great in the morning, but dry and rough after taking a hot shower. Lack of oil anyone?

7. Surely when humans are exposed to the weather more and are not just sitting inside all day, the oil on the human skin protects it to a noticeable degree.

I find it impossible to believe that if we had zero oil production our skin would be perfectly healthy. It is there for a reason. Too much may be bad, but you need some. Too often physicians think everything is a sickness because that is how they are taught to see things. All humans are dying, riddled with illnesses and problems along the way. Well, I just don't think that is the way it works all the time.

Your sebum is part of your acid mantle that protects you from microbes. And it contains/ produces enzymes involved in the production of ceramides. And enzymes that inhibit DHT. And many more things.

Status: Clear after 30 years. Wow, I guess it's been 6 years, now.

[ Story: Severe Acne since I was 10. 10+ years of Dermatologists, Antibiotics, topicals and ACCUTANE did nothing. Discovered oranges triggered the worst of my cystic acne = about 70% improvement. Tried some nutrient supplements like B-complex with zinc and C, saw palmetto and a BHA like the aspirin mask = more improvement, a lot less oily. Then, Diet changes = Clear.

Regimen: Anti-inflammatory, nutrient dense, blood sugar stabilizing diet and supplements (for hormones, inflammation, aging, health). No soap or other cleanser except for hand washing! Water only or Oil cleanse. Aloe Vera mixed with niacinimide and a high linoleic acid oil for moisturizer and reduce pigmentation.

Diet effects acne in so many ways: hormone balance, inflammation, Insulin levels, digestion, allergies and intolerances, liver function, adrenal function, SHBG levels, sebum quality, cell function and turnover, nutrient deficiencies, body fat, etc. Basic advice: Eat, sleep, supplement and exercise like you are a diabetic. And eat real food!

Evolutionary Advantages:

 

1. My face is so shiny it can serve as reflector! 

 

2. Oily skin is more pliable and wrinkle free. Its get that nice dewy look but after a while my face can be used for stir frying lol

 

3. I can no longer think of any advantages.

This is an interesting question.  Here’s my opinion.

 

Human beings are the only mammals in the world that walk gracefully on two legs.  The only other creature that walks upright is an aquatic bird, the penguin, but it is quite clumsy.   Bipedalism is really rare.  

 

Compared with running or walking on four legs, we don’t have the sudden bursts of speed that four legged creatures are capable of, and we have more difficulty moving down steep terrain.  We prefer a flat terrain.

 

Humans also sweat a lot more than other mammals, which gives us more long range endurance because we are slower to overheat.  It’s thought that three or four ancient humans would walk along the grasslands of Africa, and throw stones into the thickets by creeks, or shout, and scare out herbivores that would start running.  We would select one animal and start jogging after it and follow it on the grasslands and through the thickets.  As the animal tired, we would close in on it, and throw stones at it and it would start running again.  After about an hour, the animal would drop its head because it was overheated and unable to run.  The animal would simply stop moving.  Then our ancestors would spear it, drag it home, and cook it.  As a result we had a high protein, high fat diet that allowed our brains to grow and we became very social creatures, but we’re also very sweaty and oily.

To our current knowledge:

 

1. Moisture retention - Because sebum creates a protective barrier between the skin and the air, moisture loss is minimized. This helps to prevent premature lines, if you notice that people with dry skin seem to age much quicker and their skin often looks much worse as they age compared to someone who is an oil slick.

 

2. Some protection from the elements - it seems that oil helps to diminish the effects of the weather on the skin, i.e. cold, wind, rain, humidity because of the protective barrier it creates, again.

 

3. Ermmmm...even though we are told that a matte complexion is desirable, someone with dewy/shiny skin looks much healthier than someone with dry,cracked skin. We are attracted to 'healthy' looking complexions, because the skin often reflects the overall health of the person. So your parents got it on and made you.

This thread is awesome. 

 

I'm not a science girl-but all i know is that i don't have wrinkles or crows feet. My same age friends do. Maybe it has nothing to do with each other since our genetics all differ of course. I smoked for 15 years, I ate terribly in my early 20's until I was forced to change my diet, I didn't drink enough water, and at times I used crap make-up. The only thing I did right was staying out of the sun. Very grateful I was smart about that. 

It makes me think that my oily skin was always a good thing even though it's not the greatest to deal with. I'll take it over dry cracked skin.

Nobody can say over-washing doesn't cause excess sebum to be secreted.

I used to cleanse excessively and my oil production was out if control. The minute I stopped, so did the oil.

I think some sebum has it's benefits, just not too much of it.
