I don't think there's any question that Spiro works for men. I think whether it's safe for them to take it or not is more the issue that's up for debate. Or perhaps, whether it's worth the possible side effects.

That's a good point, but are women going to get different side effects?

There is a possibility of impotence in men who take spiro. I used to follow the progress of a young man on the healthboards who took spiro for acne. It got rid of his acne but he paid a price. I never quite got how that was worth it.

Is that not a good thing? First of all, I'm a guy and spiro cleared my acne. It did decrease my sexual sesire, but not by much. I think it would be a good thing for guys, because they don't need/want to have sex as often. Pretend I was married: my wife may only want to have sex once a week, and the guy may want it every day. Spiro will keep the husband and the wife on the same sex page. For once the wife needs to ask for sex...

The side effects for women are not as severe because we don't need as much testosterone as men do.

Impotence isn't just a lack of desire, it's a lack of ability (if you know what I mean). It will affect the ability to have children as well.

We can keep going back and forth on this... I'm experiencing the side effects. I think the side effects everyone is worried about are being much overly exaggerated. The only one I don't like is the impaired thinking and reactions. It's making me feel lazy...

I am going to agree with Buke here. he is a male taking the drug he knows how it affects him.. shouldn't he understand that perspective more than us ladies? And frankly there are accounts of women having some pretty negative side effects too but that doesn't stop the rest and majority of us from having great results!! Buke I still think like this..men and women have been prescribed this drug for other reasons than acne.. do Dr.'s not give it to them because they are males? I am sure this is not the case. maybe even men can have TOO much testosterone right? Either way its working for you with little to no side effects good for you,, and I have read that some women's sex drives go down BUT mine has NOT AT ALL!! And oddly enough I think I want to have sex more than my partner soo.. moral everyone is different.. try it for yourself and see if it is for you OR not maybe.. wink.gif

I am a male and have been on spiro for almost a year now. My derm prescribed it for acne, after having tried all the other stuff, that didn't do the job. Sure, there are some side effects, but no big deal for me because it was more important to beat acne.

Spiro is also prescribe to men for other things, like high blood pressure. Why would it be okay for a Dr. to prescribe spiro for high BP, but not for acne? Doesn't make sense.

Hope this helps. I'll check back to see if anyone wants to shoot me down a bit. smile.gif

Please note I only play devil's advocate so people will know as much as they can about something before they try to use it. That said...

I don't think the comparison of acne to high blood pressure really works. High blood pressure can lead to death, acne doesn't. Depression worsened by acne could, but the main issue is not the acne. The side effects of Spiro for men are only ones I would consider risking if the issue were a matter of life and death. And while I'm sure there are men taking it for other issues, I'm sure the doctors would have recommended exhausting all other options before turning to this.

That is another very great point, but there are a lot other medicines for high blood pressure that males can take without the side effects...This posts states that spiro works for men, not spiro may work with some consequences. I'm just letting males know that it could very much work for their acne. If they are thinking of taking it, they should be very aware of the side effects, just like any medications...

my old derma told me once that she didn't give out spiro to men because it can have weird affects on their bodies...like it's used for males going through a sex change to help grow breasts or something

It is, but I bet the doses are really high! Men have very high test levels compared to women.

I do think spiro should be a last resort for men because of fertility issues and since testosterone is so important for a male, not even related to sex. As men age they usually experience low testosterone levels which is problematic for them and leads to low muscle tone and weight gain, among other things. I wonder if lowering earlier will cause problems in this area later when it declines due to age.

Whats up man? I would say spiro is better than antibiotics, because it doesn't only get rid of pimples, but it gets rid of the oil. Spiro has a lot more side effects. Teenage acne is caused by too much testosterone converting into dht(another male hormone). DHT causes your pores to build up oil, this oil traps bacteria. It doesn't only trap the bacteria, but it also multiplys bacteria. This causes acne. Antibiotics will kill the bacteria, but spiro will stop those hormones from producing too much oil. I'm a 20 year old male still going through puberty, I started a little late(16). Your brain has a setting that says when and how much hormone to produce. This setting is triggered during puberty. Humans need the same hormones that cause acne to get taller, bigger, stronger, deeper voice, body/facial hair, ect. Same with women... That's why I'll say it's not safe for teenagers to take this. They will be boyish forever.

Okay, I think I'll stick to choosing one of the antibiotics for the moment. tongue.gif Thanks.
