I keep getting ingrown hairs. I've been using an electric shaver for about a year now.

I stopped moisturizing my face about a month ago because it was making my face way too oily and creating white heads. I think because my face is a lot drier than before, it's leading to ingrown hairs? Do you guys have an advice? Do any of you have ingrown facial hairs? They're the worst. They get infected and red and are sore and I really want to solve this problem. I'm thinking maybe a light moisturizer after I shave?

Also, do you guys always moisturize your face after shaving or what? I really hate the thought of moisturizing my face these days but apparently it can prevent acne too by preventing the skin from producing excess oil to combat the dryness.

ANY HELP WILL DO GUYS, thanks.

Are they ingrown hairs or are they folliculitis? There's a difference. I've been fighting a recurring folliculitis problem for a while now. I tried different razors, electrics, shave creams. It would go away but always come back.

The standard treatment is bactroban ointment which kills staph. I actually just started using it myself 5 days ago. I had to argue with my doctor that I had folliculitis and not acne. He was a GP and not a derm so to him it all looks the same. The bactroban is already helping quite a bit, though not as quickly as I would like.

1) Stop using electric shavers, they pull-out the hair as opposed to cutting it,

2) try wet shaving. Get some good shaving cream (not the Gillette crap), use a manual razor, and use an aftershave.

3) IMPORTANT: never shave against the grain if you don't want in-grown hairs! Your strokes should always start from the top and go to the bottom. This also applies to your neck.

The problem is the electric shaver you are using. trash it out. What is happening is that you are cutting the hair below the skin. Trust me follow this thread a member created and you'll be all cured in no time. Thats how confident I am in it working. I've suffered from that crap too much for me not to help others.

Are u using a foil shaver or rotary? I think foil shavers are less prone to leave ingrowns...but if you're pressing too hard or too often it can irritate the hair or cut it under the skin. Just glide it over as lightly as possible without pushing the skin. Also dont go too fast or it'll just pull the hair before it can cut it.

Why not shave with a razor? Try a single blade is a multi blade broke you out. Big difference.

And ingrowns are usually longer lasting, more inflamed, and there's clearly a bump formed. Folliculitis is inflamed, but usually not much of a bump until it comes to a head. Usually the hair grows back out like normal, while for an ingrown you won't see the hair again until it gets freed from under the skin.

i havent had an ingrown for about 2 months now. all i did was switch to a clipper type shaver, its the wilkinson sword quad titanium with the built in trimmer. i just use the trimmer.

i also have discovered that Clinique aloe shaving gel is amazing.
